@@loopop So after extensive use, and now on firmware 1.4.0 this device is truly amazing for me. The workflow is super easy. OldSkool Synth Boy I’ve had an MPC controller before, but the one that was mostly a controller, so the piano roll was in the software, so in the laptop screen. The Blackbox has a very small screen instead. Sure, you can zoom in to see and input the notes, but it’s not really something I use that much unlike you would in a MPC. Think of the Blackbox as a step above the Electribes but not trying to be an MPC. In the end I use it the most to load loops and immediately sync them to the tempo while triggering other drum sounds
@@miguelgjesus thank you so much. Hardware multi effects unit that enables me to create DJ Style transitions . Off topic slightly, but I got to this video from this hope. I have been looking for something like this for a long time and seems to not be at all any market for it . I want to move away from ableton. I am running a boss RC 600. I quite simply just want a multi effects capacity to glitch and remix and fades and phases and EQ and all that goodness a DJ set might do to transition into different songs, on my case, recreate and start multi looping idea. Anyone have any suggestions?
It would be nice if the sampled CV could be used to perform internal modulation. Perhaps a future Blackbox update feature along with automation capabilities?
Could this be like.... the ultimate thing? I'm LOVING this. Can you connect more than one MIDI controller to it? Such as Keystep plus a pad controller? That would be a lot of fun and AWESOME if possible.
certainly via MIDI (with a merge) and potentially with a USB hub, I haven't checked, but if not I would just get a different controller like the minilab that has both
@@loopop That's what I was thinking. Keystep via MIDI, and maybe like a Maschine Mikro (midi mode obviously) via USB. That would be so fun. I mean sure, an MPC Live can already do this (plus a Keystep) but... this thing's only $599. And it's not Akai. haha.
chriscauldermusic I am gonna call my iPad Pro in space grey my “black box”, hehe. This looks cool but I just realized the screen is kind of small... even 7” on the mpc live is a little small. (iPad sized screen of mpc x is wayyyy nicer for me to use) I really hope Akai release the clip mode like the Force has for the MPCs soon. Still this is a cool device! Was amazed how much it does, price is right.
Would have been nice if you could use the recorded CV voltage to modulate a sample on another pad - like an LFO maybe? Maybe LFOs will be in future updates. I love this thing.
@sbmphr when i say custom built, i mean has all the ports that the device in this video does, has an aspect ratio that works for a DAW in arrangement view ( wide ), has an inbuilt DAC good enough so that you dont need to also carry around an interface, has a hardware configuration set up with production in mind ( good CPU, large M.2 PCIe storage ). I can just imagine Ableton making one and having their logo on the back in a matt grey finish... would be so cool...
Something that would be the size and the price of a good tablet (yeah, if you want a good CPU and storage, don’t even mentioning the non-standard sized touchscreen you’re dreaming about), but that the manufacturer could only sell to musicians.... Bankruptcy guaranteed!!! 😁
Hello, I am interested in buying a Black Box Sampler Studio. Before that, I would like to know the maximum number of seconds I can upload a pre-made sample from Ableton. I want to include this machine in my live setup to play backing tracks of complete songs (5 minutes or more) and additionally play other live machines I have. Do you think the Black Box would work for this purpose? Is it possible for the sample track I upload to the Black Box to sync with my external Groove box and other machines? Thank you very much
@loopop Very thorough review of features. I appreciate all that you do! There's just one feature that you briefly touched on, I need more direct answers, and it's hard to find any info, all related to polyphony: Can you use the blackbox to play looped samples, with polyphony, from a keyboard? (think, like the fairlight AARRR1 voice sample) I think your answer there was 4-voice polyphony max per "Pad". So as a result, I'm wondering: Can you map the keyboard range of notes to be, say 1 octave per pad? AND THEN map the same sample across four pads, so you'll end up with 16-note polyphony of the same sound when using a 4-octave keyboard? Lastly: Does it respond to sustain pedal for this kind of playing? Or pitch bend/mod wheel data? The reason for asking all of these questions is simple: In 2019, we are **STILL** missing an Akai S1000-equivalent sampler for keyboard players. You know: velocity layering, looping, corss-fade looping, ADSR, and so on. Hoping this one will do the trick, or come close to it.
Hey thanks or the kind words. To your question, you can't create that kind of mapping on Blackbox (octave per pad) but if your keyboard can create splits which each octave gets sent to a different octave, then sure. For example the Novation SLMK3 can do that quite easily
This blacbox is really interesting but there are few key things missing: FXs, EQ, Compression, Automation, etc. If you wanna create a song, you need all of these resources to be working (and 2 fxs isn't enough, we need filter, distortion, etc). This could potentially be added via firmware upadte. In that case, it would be a "take my money"...
Kanser 16 note polyphony: Up to 4 notes per pad for samples, 2 notes per pad for clips and slicers (from the product page). I think it also applies to multisample pads, 4 notes is what you got.
@@loopop I did, it is confusing. It says 4 notes per pad. From Company: 16 note polyphony: Up to 4 notes per pad for samples, 2 notes per pad for clips and slicers. So if used with an external keybroad is this 4 or 16?

I quite simply just want a multi effects capacity to glitch and remix and fades and phases and EQ and all that goodness a DJ set might do to transition into different songs, on my case, recreate and start multi looping idea.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Super helpful as always!
this is the device elektron were supposed to make. octatrack MK3 needs to have this as its brains
and excelent review. As always. To the point. thank you
And i m so happy with my 4 seconds sampling on my Roland s220 and a bit more with my tx16w
It would be nice if the sampled CV could be used to perform internal modulation. Perhaps a future Blackbox update feature along with automation capabilities?
Can you do a video on the update please? Thanks! Love this in depth description! Wondering how the black box compares to the deluge.
If it could sequence PG change, it would be a great companion for my Digitakt and Digitone’s lack of song mode.
This was a valuable comment
That would be really great
Impressive hardware and your introduction/demo thanks
Could this be like.... the ultimate thing? I'm LOVING this. Can you connect more than one MIDI controller to it? Such as Keystep plus a pad controller? That would be a lot of fun and AWESOME if possible.
certainly via MIDI (with a merge) and potentially with a USB hub, I haven't checked, but if not I would just get a different controller like the minilab that has both
... or one via usb and another via midi in...
Please let this end up in my collection 🙏
Would have been nice if you could use the recorded CV voltage to modulate a sample on another pad - like an LFO maybe?
Maybe LFOs will be in future updates. I love this thing.
This made me think how cool it would be for a company to make a widescreen tablet custom built for production.
@sbmphr and when i say wide i mean something that resembles the shape of a compact 25 key midi keyboard
Something that would be the size and the price of a good tablet (yeah, if you want a good CPU and storage, don’t even mentioning the non-standard sized touchscreen you’re dreaming about), but that the manufacturer could only sell to musicians....
Bankruptcy guaranteed!!! 😁
It'd be cooler if a stereo could read my mind and play the music.
Thank you very much
As far as I remember there's no limit, but please ask the company and let us know back here if you have a chance!
@loopop Very thorough review of features. I appreciate all that you do!
There's just one feature that you briefly touched on, I need more direct answers, and it's hard to find any info, all related to polyphony:
Can you use the blackbox to play looped samples, with polyphony, from a keyboard? (think, like the fairlight AARRR1 voice sample)
I think your answer there was 4-voice polyphony max per "Pad".
I need this, really really need this.
Is it possible to use internal effects for a microphone input?
This is outrageous.
Can you sample an instrument over a range of keys using a different sample per semi tone with Blackbox?
Yes, Just not automatically
@@loopop Thanks, how many notes can it play at the same time? It it only 4?
Kanser 16 total I think - check with the company to make sure
Kanser 16 note polyphony: Up to 4 notes per pad for samples, 2 notes per pad for clips and slicers (from the product page). I think it also applies to multisample pads, 4 notes is what you got.
@@loopop I did, it is confusing. It says 4 notes per pad. From Company: 16 note polyphony: Up to 4 notes per pad for samples, 2 notes per pad for clips and slicers. So if used with an external keybroad is this 4 or 16?

that’s the good stuff right there
Awesome device. Definitely needs more fx and an xy to control them.
This and a sp 404sx and shit load of dusty old records 🔥 🔥 🔥
