It is appropriate. Knuckles is likely not very familiar with the concept of the domestication of dogs beyond a few generations whereas on Earth, the domestication has led to species differentiation and subspecies. Just wait until he discovers the Coywolves-a new species emerging from the interbreeding of coyotes and wolves in North America.
Honestly I think Sonic and Tails look better than they did in the actual first trailer we got definitely better than in the Sonic Drone Home short we got

Okay, Sonic DEFINITELY looks older here, even if it was unintentional. He has to be AT LEAST 14 and 1/2 (he was 13 in the first and 14 in the second, probably 15 by the third). Also, I love the way they stylized Tails' bangs here! Having the middle one slightly towards his left. The comedy seems to be intact, which is relieving. All and all, good clip!!
If sonic was 13 in the first movie, then that makes tails six years old. If sonic was 14 in the second movie, then Tails was seven years old. Finally, if Sonic is currently 15 in the upcoming third movie, then Tails is eight years old and is the genius! Amy Rose wouldn’t have met Sonic yet until the third movie. there are age continuity errors in the franchise between video games and tv series.

maybe!! maybe its their way of sending him off to learn about himself for a lil while and give him something to do
I think it's going to be more about Knuckles getting domesticated and training Wade, and maybe something else.
Could be Knuckles has always done his own thing apart from Sonic and Tails but comes when they need him. It could also be through his journey with Wade he understands that things are different from his old home and that it's ok or something in that nature.
