  • This tutorial shows you how to use the "Curve through XYZ points" in Solidworks. You can use this to help you make things like aircraft wings, wind or gas turbine blades, car spoilers or anything where you need a part to follow a curve defined by some form of equation.
Website I use for finding the aerofoil profile is World of Krauss at:
    www.worldofkrau...
You can read some more notes on importing curves at:
    solidstudent.or...
And if you have a question about Solidworks that you'd like me to help you with you can ask either here in the comments or by tweeting me at:

i hope this will be useful for future reference- If you receive the error file name invalid, not found, etc.. the following worked for me:
    - follow steps in this video up until save as in excel
    - save as formatted text (Space delimited)
    - try importing as directed in SolidWorks. If it still doesnt work:
    - open the text file
    - make sure the spacing between columns is consistent (for me, the issue was between columns 1 and 2. sometimes there would be 1 space, sometimes none)
    - save and try again

That was extremely painful trying to get it to open in solidworks. Obviously it's 2016 now and systems have changed since 2012, but I finally got it to work. If you get up to the point of saving the data to a new sheet, save it as a text file (tab delimited), open the text file, make every number have the same number of decimal places on the right side of the decimal by filling in with zeros if needed (i.e. 123.700 instead of 123.7 if your other values extend to the thousandths place like 456.789) (Don't do 0.000, leave it as just 0), make sure there is only ONE SPACE between each column of every row (yes, it''l look offset a bit, but it works). Once you've done this, save again, and follow the rest of the video.

Big ups to this guy. This solved my issue. Make sure it is a space not a tab between columns.

What worked for me, is first I saved it as a CSV file without typing the .txt.
Then I went to File Explorer, set it to display file extensions for files, and then it showed the .csv file extension.
I simply erased that, and changed it to .txt, and it said "The file may become unreadable by changing its extension" but I proceeded anyway and it ended up working!

How can I have a aerofoil chord dimension drive scaling on this curve? I want to be able to copy the curve into multiple sketches on a plane and endlessly change the scale of the curve without having to import a new coordinate file.

hello I just want to know how you extrude d wing in taper manner

  • @snoobler
    @snoobler 6 лет назад

Do these curves really go through the points? Upon overlaying points into a sketch, I see deviations for all points except the end points.

Very nice Video. Question, how do you make a curve with taper.
Like a curved pipe reducing say 8 inch diameter to 6 inch.
    Long radius 90. thanks

Haven't been able to get this to work. Solidworks just keeps saying the file is not compatible even though I saved it as you instructed.

after clicking "curve through xyz points" a pop-window is not showing up. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

if the curve is based on an equation then why don't you type the equation not solidworks? does solid works not let you do this? that would be lame

Thanks but I already figured a way to work with excel by myself. HOWEVER I encountered another problem.. I got several xyz coordinates for a NACA0012 profile (wing) and for some reason the profile is not complete as in the flow edge (back part) is not cloosed so it forces me to close it by myself which fails for me... please give me your skype I would really appreciate it.

Sorry buddy, as far as I know theres no way to add lots of numbers in SW quickly, your best bet is to use Excel and click and drag the cell contents to create a 0 column and reimport into SW.
