The shore at Buckhaven has one of the best views across the River Forth that can be found anywhere along the Fife coast - on a clear day, it cannot be matched! Its a bold claim to make about a coastal region famed for its beauty! There is much that can be said about this remarkable, though largely unremarked upon village, and we will return to look into that history another day.
Today, we visit Buckhaven Sands for our first look! If it looks at all familiar, its because we visited the area for one of our round-ups during the Summer. Since then, we have wanted to return to see what the sands have to offer...
At first, we're quite disappointed with our finds, but as we move along the coast we find both a remarkable landscape and some very nice finds - among them a partial glass bottle stopper, codd bottle, and what could be the most beautiful marble we have ever found!
Its a grey day, but the gentle lapping of the waves and the calm of the day are magical!

We continue to follow the regulations to make sure that we work safely, responsibly, and legally.
In Scotland, we are permitted to travel within our regional boundaries for work or exercise. We are also permitted to meet with one person and to travel five miles beyond our regional boundary; despite this, we will not meet with anyone and we will remain close to home and only ever film in an isolated place. We remain entirely committed to maintaining social distancing for the safety of others and ourselves.
Our working policies since March 2020:
We have met with no one at all, at any time, even when we were permitted to dine out or meet others, we remained in isolation.
We will never film in a busy location - aside from maintaining isolation, we could not make our content in a busy area.
We have restricted our travel to distances that allow us to get to our location, film our content, and return home, without ever visiting local amenities, entering any buildings etc. This gives us a reasonable window to work in while also maintaining that we are not out for very long. If we arrive in an area and people are present, we leave immediately and try to find somewhere we can work safely.
We only film once a week, and we always do that at some point during mid-week.
We will continue to follow these policies fully, and we will cease outdoor filming altogether should government guidance change.

Just gorgeous! I love pebbles. Isn't it just amazing what the flow of water does to things. Swirls and rounds and softens. And it reveals the strata and folds that the earth does to the rock before letting the water have its way. Wow, that marble was a nice find. I found my first "mudlarking" marble the other day while scavenging scrap metal. I grabbed a piece of metal and looked down and at my feet was a green milk glass marble with swirls in it. it was a bit worse for wear. I think a car ran over it. but I was very excited.
Yes indeed! Water is such an irresistable force - its amazing seeing places where the tide is now lower than it was hundreds or thousands of years ago - so beautiful! :D Congrats on that marble - what a lucky find among metal - it sounds georgeous, even if it has seen better days... Its always a great find and the ware on it is its character - unique and beautiful! :D xo

Any day on a beach is a great one, no matter than you find. Nicole's face when she spotted that marble was absolutely priceless. It was fun that we were "in on the surprise" -- that added to the moment. As for your 'magic glass', any ideas as to its origin? It is tricky just now, but, we are lucky to live somewhere with so much coastline that we can, with a wee bit of persistence, find the right spot - we were so glad we ended up here - such nice surprises waiting! :D

We have a lot of beach erosion up the coast here in Perth, its sad to see our coast crumble into the ocean. Heartbreaking actually! Another beautiful calming episode, the water lapping the rocks, the misty ocean and Craig & Nicole couldn't ask for more. Stay well and happy. x

Some really great sea glass finds. I can't believe how thick the glass was on Codd bottles😳!!! I've never seen the inside before. Those bottles must have weight a ton when they were full of mineral water.

Buckhaven's shore seemed hauntingly mysterious with it's shroud of fog and deserted beach. I was half way expecting to see a water horse 🦕 rise out of the sea as you paned out across the water😉🤭(🤦🏼♀️ sorry The Water Horse is a favorite movie of mine).

I think this bay has some of the most incredible views across the River Forth! The marble is so nice and we have never seen a piece like the 'magic' glass before - its still puzzling us! :D

On another site about Auld Fife someone commented that they used to find fossils on Buckhind beach by splitting the shale rocks - maybe something to look out for next time you’re down there?
Yes! We have to give that a shot! We may need to do a wee bit of reading up on that as our knowledge about geology is limited - fossil hunting sounds like good fun for another visit! :D

Up the road in Buckhind wow what a beautiful marble I wonder who played with it all those moons ago....I love our Fife coastal line long golden miles 💛 of beauty were truly spoilt here and we just don't no how to appreciate it. Our open spaced green belts are the envy of many who only have concrete and a space so tiny we would call it wast group grass and others a play park. Just for a nano-second at the beginning I thought that rock was a seal! Around the 19 minute mark, Caroline and Phil would know what that is; clearly a set of fossilised dragon eggs!!
Oh! It might have been a seal! They are definitely in this estuary! Dragon eggs! Now we have another reason to go back! haha! Funnily though, we've been told there are fossils around this shore - we'll have to do a little reading up on that! :D Thank you so much!

Lovely camera work. I wanted to reach out and run my hand over some of those large dark gray rocks. They made the smaller colored rocks stand out. The strange piece with the round rocks looked like the end corner of a rock wall fence.

Hi there! I had to look up what makes a rock purple. It may be from Coraline Algae perhaps. ? The sea is looking beautifully calm there and a nice foggy misty day. What a pretty blue marble! It’s winter here in Canada, can’t wait for spring to get on the beach 🏖

I'm so used to seeing rivers and beaches strewn with human detritus , that area is refreshingly bare.
Finding a few man(woman) made objects there brings them into focus.
I haven't forgotten the bricks and concrete, but they seem more attune with the land and seascape.
Since that was such a pleasant retreat, it makes me wonder why, 1930's storms and all, it was never restored.
Was it the war or the fact that travel to other places became easier and cheaper, or did other advancing technologies interfere with the sampler pleasures... I don't know,
perhaps you have some ideas.

We're pretty lucky in the part of the world - we only ever see the odd shopping trolley in the river that runs through the village we live in and, although plastic is an issue, it could be so much worse.
This is a great and key question that we are still researching - I'm in the middle of the most recent geological survey and it seems that sea dumped coal waste lies at the heart of the problems. We plan to go back and cover the details soon.
What you say about cheaper transport and the like have definitely played a role - we spoke a little about that when we looked at Leven's abandoned railway - Buckhaven (where this was filmed) was also on that line and it closed at the same time.

Could you tell if the color went deep into the rock or just on the surface? On our west coast we have purple rocks with a quartz veins through them.
Craig with the Bricks, were they dumped or were they remnants of industry? Personally (and I am not asking) it would be interesting to know what industry has disappeared and see how it has effected the coastline.
I don't think you had a "Thames," situation where you had a bike stream of sewage etc running through Scotland? One place we stopped in was Grantown-on-Spey.
Craig did you know that amongst the fly fishers in the world there is a cast called the Spey cast that was developed on that river because the fly fishers had no space behind them to stretch out a backcast.
Back in 1985 I asked about fishing it, so I would have had to get a ticket from the local salmon club and wait my turn for £350 in 1985 pounds which were about $1.87 Canadian at the time.
It never happened but the town at the time was just beautiful and I still have a fly box I purchased there.
A little less emotional today, sometimes my medication screws with my head.

Regards the colours - the things that looked like pebbles/stones have the colour running all the way through them, but, when we tried to clean them, they fell apart and crumbled. They do not turn into a clay like material, they just crumble. I honestly cannot say if the colour is more than surface on the much larger formation on the shore, and they seemed to be solid, or at least they don't seem to be 'crumbly' after the tides pass over... I plan to do some hunting around to see what more I can find out about those... puzzling!
Regards industry - I have been meaning to create a map so that we can link up the locations and show what was going on in each place that we have been to so far. Here, fishing and later, around mid 1800s, coal mining replaced it. I'm in the middle of reading the most recent geological survey of the area for a more detailed look at what exactly we are looking at. The short version seems to be, mine waste was dumped, then dislodged by tides, dragging beaches with it - a great deal of waste has been dumped since to try to prevent the erosion caused by the former.
You are correct - nothing quite like the Thames, though I guess the Clyde was pretty bad at one time. The rivers/estuaries where we visit - the Forth and the Tay, run past, rather than through cities... the other important point is that London has nearly twice as many people living in it as the whole of Scotland, so far less waste going into rivers.
Very interesting what you say about Granton on Spey, I did not know that. Its such a lovely place! The price you mention - I'm wondering if there should be a comma. If not! Wow! That's an insane amount of money to fish a river!

That’s one of the most eroded sections of coastline - sea action, compounded by the installation of sea armour around 2009, mineworkings (especially Rosie Pit) and clay soils. There used to be a road around the coast here but it, like the golden sands and the harbour, have gone. The sands you were walking on are not especially stable, just the latest erosion of the Ness Braes above

Nicole uses marbles for pendants a lot - we always have a few in our ETSY store - we usually use codd marbles (those are clear glass marbles that were used in old pressurised bottles), and yes, they are very lovely.
Nicole speaks a little about these marbles in one of our early videos - I'll post a link at the bottom of my reply.
We are very lucky to have lots of beautifully coloured stones, semi-precious gems and lovely sea glass along our coast! :D

Thanks so much Larisa! We love Buckhaven - sadly the town itself is not getting a lot of love and the beach is not what it was a hundred years ago... that said, it has the most spectacular views towards Edinburgh and we absolutely love going there! :)

We are honestly not sure what those pink rocks are - we took a few home and they just crumbled as soon as they dried! Finding a marble is the best thing , followed by stopper and beads 😊❤️

@@scottishmudlarking If you say there was a village /docks,surely some sort of road would be there,tarmac was not a thing in the old days,but to have such big blocks of it?I know in our area flint was used in walls,and they were victorian or older
@@anniehartley8851 Indeed there was! Most of the infrastructure for the harbour etc is across the bay from where we were, though there were fishers cottages on the bay. I'm reading through a few surveys of the area - much of the 'hill' seems to be composed of dumped materials from various projects and not least the old coal mines - there is a story there to revisit, and I'll see what I can find out about any links out to the bay here! :D

Thanks so much! It really depends on where in the world you are ... states like Florida have virtually no sea glass but lots of amazing shells 🐚! Marbles are certainly our favourite find!!!
That stretch of coast has some ochre seams. I remember walking there years ago and seeing exposed purple/orange ochre after a landslip.

I did find about a quarter of a round grinding stone
I love the rock formations at this shoreline
That grinding stone sounds interesting! The rocks are stunning at that part of the coast and a little further along 😃
@@scottishmudlarking I was very excited to find it. I do enjoy the rocks as well, I love learning about the wishing stones. I have seen several, was fascinated by them but never knew there was a lore behind them
on my beach sometimes very old shoes wash up, i Think these may belong to folk who drowned here

Parky is a new term for me. I assume from the context that it means cold. Is it from parka? Or something else?
Great question! So glad you asked about parky... Yes, it means chilly/cold. But, because its one of those words we take for granted, we did not know its origin! So, we did a little digging and found much dispute about its origin! Oxford English Dictionary just say, late 19th Century, origin unknown! Some sources do suggest that it may originate from the Inuit Nenets language parka, meaning animal skin! That makes a lot of sense, though many of the other suggestions I read are very parochial and far less likely.
