- From the shore you can see them, but very few people have been on the islands that dot the Allegheny River within a few miles of Pittsburgh. This 2010 WQED Special explores the islands and takes viewers ashore to not only show the conservation efforts - but to see what’s actually there: from wildlife and native plants to human inhabitants and artifacts left behind. #EarthMonth

I live in Pittsburgh and I didn't know about these! Now I need to get my hands on a boat...
I live here. These videos are outstanding. If you're a metal detecting fan this river is loaded with treasure finds.
Thank you for the kind words, we're glad you enjoyed it!
This was so enjoyable and informative. Simply gorgeous and very well done. The soundtrack is very nice too.
Thank you for these awesome documentarys WQED! These are so fun to watch.
Thank you!
I'm familiar with the ones further up north near where I live. The one, full of walnut trees, had a nutting stone used by American Indians on the southern end. I also found beer bottles eroding out of the bank. I found 3 and they were made in 1915, I think. There are many pipes and things related to the oil boom, too.
Did a canoe trip with the YMCA back in 1977 from Kinzua dam to Pittsburg never forget it .
Cool presentation…Pittsburgh rocks!
Ive gone looking with a uv flashlight and found tons of uranium ruver glass, likely from around the 40s
Anywhere specific? I’d love to take a look too
