This is an honest interview. He said what he felt.
But as an Indian let me clarify that there is no concept of 'evil white man' in India. We hate Western media who are always hurtful and insulting towards us, despite that there are no specific emotions.
I also sense some kind of frustration, disappointment in his voice. Hope he will find more friends.

There are more than 500 million views worth of videos on Indonesian social media channels (mostly youtube alone) targeting India and Indians specifically on a wide range of topics like street food (using clips actually from Bangladesh and sometimes even other places like African countries , China, Malaysia) while claiming they are from India. On open d f c t n issue using old stats and outdated video clips from 2010 when they uploaded their video in 2020. On caste system they will make videos purposely leaving out important facts to present an unbalanced biased view of the issue that makes us Hindus look cruel and like shavages etc

As a black westerner when I traveled there I found India to be the most filthiest and most racist country on earth.

Just wanna add, most of the street markets are not black markets, they are what we call part of informal economy, they are connected to the formal economy through levels of distributors and sellers which makes things more accessible but slightly costlier, or in some cases directly to the producers in case of vegetables and meats/fish, which is great, we get fresh veggies or meats/fish at cheaper price. This is why in India, it's better to get wet food from local market and everything else from retail, if you wanna get more value for money. On the other hand, black markets are those, whose products have illicit or unknown sources, such as thieves market etc...and yes, they too have presence in India, although those are declining over the years.
And even what used to be called informal economy has been formalized after introduction of GST mostly if not 100%.

Where I stay in mumbai all the stall and shop owners are very much connected, we believe that my relative or family friend will earn from me when I buy goods and services from them that makes a strong bonding among us

being LGBT was criminalized by the British in india and decriminalized by current government in 2018.
And then those lgbtq ++--.. Whatever abuse the same government RSS and hindus and our gods and make fun of them who supported for them to get decriminalized so Lgbt won't get support from us . And Muslims and Christians will always see them as criminals because of there books so those pride parade people won't get marriage rights
The SC decriminalised the law in 2018 and the SC is listening to the SMA hearings now. If you read up the arguments put forth by the govt. you would be glad that there is separation of power in India😅 we have a generally very progressive judiciary.

I am an Indian and not from a wealthy background. On my birthday each year, my mom would prepare payes, and khichri and lots of other stuff. Once I asked mom - "why do you celebrate my birthday so much? It's not that important that I was born", and she said "It's important to me."

My experience is a little different. If you learn the language of the region, learn to appreciate the food or at least certain dishes and learn at least a little bit about Indian culture, people in India will consider you Indian.
This is a big, diverse country, with hundreds of different religions and thousands of ethnicities and people everywhere look different. My uncle was married to a white Canadian woman and people in our community went out of there way to make her feel at home till the time my uncle and aunt both moved back to Canada after four years of living in India. We used to celebrate Thanksgiving day despite hardly anyone here knowing what it was and we used to decorate with French and Canadian national symbols(she had French ancestry). We loved our aunt, so we cared enough to find out what it was and how to celebrate it.
My aunt in turn was a great inspiration for me. She was not just respectful of our culture, she actively participated and asked questions about our religious gatherings. You could not but like the woman, and after a week of living with her, we didn't even think of her as someone from a different country, she was one of our own. My mom cried when my aunt had to leave with my uncle and my grandma gave her her most prized posession, her ancestral jewelery which she wore with much pride. My mom has a picture of my aunt in a saree from one of my cousin's weddings in her drawing room, alongside her daughters. That's what she is to her, apparently.
She continues to visit us twice each year, despite our Uncle having passed away 5 years ago. She maintains that we are her true family and we concur. Today, she has a successful legal practice in Canada and her and my eldest sister who graduated Harvard Med last year are an inspiration to my female cousins.

I am considering retirement options in India; I am Canadian, but of West Indian (Caribbean) origin, and India's less individualistic way of life (compared to Canada's) has great appeal to me.
So to hear from you of your family's great acceptance and love for the foreigner, & from that foreigner (& you do all sound special!) is very encouraging.

It is not uncommon for a non-Indian to feel like an "outsider" in India, but as anyone with some understanding of the world will tell you, it is an universal feeling, not specific to India. You DO feel like an outsider in a place very alien to you. Has happened to me when I lived in countries other than mine.
Besides, how locals perceive and react to a foreigner also depends on how the foreigner in question reacts to the locals. My personal experience is that these things are highly reciprocal in nature. Positive people often find positive people. Negative people mostly run into negative people.
A white skinned single gay man in his late 40s/50s in India, he is likely very very different from average Indian perception of a man. And so he experienced. I found his experience pretty obvious.
Coming to India with western context won't work. This gentleman did not speak about that baggage he had from his previous experience in Australia. That is great! Excellent interview!

Indian cinema is not just bollywood. All South Indian cinema are on rise. So is ott content.. Bollywood has no formula. Its mere story telling. Songs and dance are not formula, it's part of Indian culture. We have many festivals and ceremonies which have song and dance, that's exactly what's shown in movies when those characters celebrate those festival, wedding etc.

True. So many of our movies have NO song & dance. But our songs are also great & reflect our dancing culture. We do celebrate everything
I actually agree with the Australian chap to an extant. I would say the people living in the urban areas of India are more exposed to Western or international films where song and dance isnt as prevalent, so sometimes we bring that expectation back with us into any Indian wood film and then get disappointed if they suddenly break into a dance. But for the vast majority for everyday Indians living in rural areas, song and dance in a movies is a critical ingredient int he experience of film watching, ( just visit any theatre with low cost tickets and see how excited the crowd gets when a song track plays, regardless of how dull the story is).

In India we have every thing multi and diverse. Your experience from one place in India changes when you travel to other place. Our food is different, traditional cloths are different, we have many languages and dialects, different types of geography, traditions, festivals, god knows what other things. India is truly multi cultural environment, thriving, prospering and little by little going forward.

@@smritijai5065 agree with you. I have lived in New Zealand for couple of years and that was good experience for me. But everywhere it’s always glass half full half empty situation. From my personal experiences I always try to see glass half full. Yes be cautious about half empty and stay vigilant but never miss the joy of being somewhere with someone. Never loose an opportunity to interact with the nature and things happening around you.

That is how it is everywhere. Indian diaspora even after living for 20 years in USA or UK are treated as foreigners. Not any discrimination. It happens due to cultural differences
No it's not like that..Not upto that level. Denial of any reality makes it worse only. You are extremely wrong. There may be few exceptions but situation is not like that. People are happily living there and much better condition. No one wants to come here.

He was looking for eggs, hahaha. From my experience living in Mumbai, almost everything can be delivered to your doorstep, grocery items, drinking water, flowers, medicines, food from fastfood and restaurants, Baskin Robbins, laundry etc. Housemaid to clean your house is also ridiculously cheap.

Sir, I am an Indian, living in Norway for 47 years.
This concption of being one of them..is..illusion.
I know..my heritage..and it reflects upon me every morning i see myself in the mirror.
I am very well integrated into Norwegian society, and have been very well placed in working environment...yet I am different..I look different..I think differently too. I do not think I can ever be Norwegian..nor I want to be a Norwegian. I will alwayds be a foreigner.
One example..when ever I meet some one new person..he starts talking to me in English..assuming..I am unable to speak Norwegian. Some times some young person ask me how long I have been here...hehe ! My answer to the young man have been "longer than you have been on this earth"..
My advise to you sie..yes..yopu will always be foreigner. Lucky you..that you are white. You get more respect than any other ethnic Indian..on two grounds..1) They assume you are rich and intellegent..and advanced. 2) As a gesture of respect..as a guest in their country..and to behave with utmost respect.
But..some..will try to cheat you..when it comes to services to get more money out of you.
Yes..India has 15 different languages. HIndi being the national language..but English is the most spoken common language.
Hindi is different to learn. I learned Norwegian in 3 months..simply because the alphabets are identical to English and many words are quite similar to english..just twisted around to form Norwegian language.
So please Sir, enjoy your stay. Indians are lovely peaceful people. It is my view..as I see India now being in Europe..and USA for last 47 years.

India is the most friendly country in the world to foreigners.. Indians respect everyone especially foreigners and will go out of their way to help them. Please ask the Jews and they will heap praises of India and how they were helped by the friendly Indians when they sought refuge here. Friendliness and helping tendency are in the blood of most Indians and are part of Indian culture. ❤

One correction I would make is that most of which you said about black market is not black market...its just small sellers or vendors who sell on streets and on roads...
This is such a beautiful conversation and Glenn was spot on about about so many things - both about life in general and about India. What I loved hearing most was his perspective about getting old. Being in my middle ages, I completely understand what he was saying about the past not exiting anymore, the future being a fantasy and the present being everything.

@@MaxChernov far more convenient for sure. I use it on a daily basis and I can testify that I have no need of cash or cards, just my phone for payment. You just scan a QR code or enter a phone number, enter the amount to pay and authenticate yourself. Voila, payment done.

It was really enlightening listening to Glen talk about his life in Mumbai. It is a view of many Westerners (read: white) that it is very difficult for them to blend in Indian society. And there is some merit in this view, which can be perhaps attributed to the two hundred years of British colonial rule in India so much so that a subconscious mistrust of anyone white is deeply ingrained still in the Indian psyche. It does not manifest openly in harmful ways but there is still a distance that people keep, and our own stereotypes of Western culture aren't helpful either. Lastly, one would really like to meet Glen and make his acquaintance.

It does not manifest in harmful ways because at their core, Indians are peaceful and deeply spiritual people. Despite all the generational pain, we have allowed and even welcomed 'foreigners ' into our spaces, our lives. Proud of India!

He has an amazing sense of absorbing things. He is quite accurate with the picture he had build about Indian culture, but he not had been to the interior parts of the country i suppose then he would get a slightly different picture. And of course, any grown up men will have it's own prejudice coming from a different culture and way of living.
I really like his attitude towards life's and cultural differences.
The population and the adjustments..... the patience and the reverence to people and Gods who spread peace unity and love .....still lot for Glen to realise .it seams Glen only observed the poverty ....observe the struggle and stil the contentment .. . also be aware of the history of mistrust they hold towards the w hites (Britishers)........Glen needs to understand as to why India is on the path of regaining the past glory......salutes to our elders who taught us to wade through difficult times .....

When you go to new country and new place you have to accept the culture and try to blend in with local population. Be open minded to things, if you try to differentiate from others how are you gonna be part of the society.

What’s the best and the worst thing about India for you?
Best: a country of life and color.
Worst: on average, 86 women get raped in India every day. I can’t believe this is still happening.
Food/ Awful long powercuts,religious politics, ppl are loud
As an Indian for me -
BEST:
i. India allows diversity to grow and has freedom of speech to challenge the injustices.
ii. India has the ability to accept the changes in it's system if required.
iii. Easy of living depending on the standards one maintain.
iv. Self sufficient driving economy with growing middle class population.
v. Allow Family values, religious values, respect for elders, honesty, hard work, education, both formal and informal, entrepreneurial spirit.
vi. India is coming out of it's colonial past and trying to forge a new India with it's ambitions so it's has youth, ambitions, dreams, goals and stride to make it big.
vii. India is blessed with all different heritage, seasons, foods, history etc.
viii. Tolerant/Patience level of the people is to admire.
ix. Unexpected growth in technology sector as people are fast catching up with digital economy.
x. Transparency in India is very much visible.
xi. Flexible inclusivity for all is present.
Worst:
i. When it come's to politics what can i say. People should talk about implemented policies for the betterment of it's citizens rather than talking shit.
ii. Personal hygiene's, cleanness, pollution, traffic jam, noise can be controlled and it is also the duty of people to follow rather than depending on governments.
iii. People needs to understand that religion and faith should be followed freely in their homes and should not be used as tool for vote bank politics etc. Once you are out of your home you are an Indian.
iv. Reservation quota should be removed and replace it with free quota depending on once competency, hard work, far sited etc.
v. There are people who are negative in each and every religion on earth who wants that nations should not be progress so because of such few people entire community should not be judge.
vi. Indian law system should be revamped immediately.

If you spend money in social pressure then it is bad. But if you do for your own happiness, for socialize friends and family, for charity. You must cherish with hard earn money. Most of the time we have our ancestral houses so don't need to worry so much for future.

Mumbai is expensive. He also implies he is living with other people, so probably splits rent and who knows what his financial status is like anyway. But I guess salaries haven't really kept up with the inflation in the cost of living nowadays.
40 K rent is cheap in Mumbai for 2 BHK• he lives in versova which is cheaper•
In areas like powai 2 BHK rent is 80 k to 1•2 lakh•per month•
Mostly all head office of Corporates are in Mumbai , they pay mid level and Senior levels 1• 5 lakh plus per month , so that is how high rises get rent from families•

I think Glenn, has deep misunderstandings even though he has lived in India for a long time, if you lived in a bad neighbourhood in the same state for a long time, perhaps it's time to try out, Bangalore, pune, Hyderabad, south of India, There are always people those who will give you some bad experience, but don't let that form you an opinion of the whole experience.

@@MaxChernov I think that Glenn being white has nothing to do being him treated a bit different at certain situations, it's the language and culture that i personally feel he could not adopt to, I had the same problem living in Germany for 5 years. Also movie industry in India is Glamorous on the outside but that's actually a swamp, you meet all sorts of people there who are less educated and highly opinionated.

@@MaxChernovI’m Singaporean Indian - worked in Mumbai for a year. He’s not exactly wrong - it’s also worrying how white women are regarded by the average Indian man. Being white in India can be very lonely experience. Being even an NRI in India who not born there etc you also have to deal with stereotypes. But the friends you make tend to last.
Bollywood is not all Indian films. There are various film industries in India, these are the best film industries in India
1) Malayalam from Kerala
2) Tamil
3) Kannada
4) Telugu
5) Gujarati
6) Marathi
7) Bengali
8) Assamese
You should see an Assamese film called Aamis that was one of the best movies I have seen. These 8 film industries have churned out 600 films with ratings above 7 out of 10. Then there is a Malayalam film called Great Indian Kitchen which is better than most of the recent Oscar films.
I was seeing the list of greatest Indian directors and this is what I found
1) Satyajit Ray who made Bengali films he won lifetime Oscar in 1992. He is to India what Andrei Tarkovsky is to Russia.
2) Mrinal Sen Bengali
3) Adoor Gopalakrishnan Malayalam
4) SS Rajamouli Telugu
5) Guru Dutt Bollywood he was also a niche director in Bollywood.

You have people like him who most people could listen to for 45 minutes happily. Over far too fast!
Other times the people are quite drab. I’m not sure if you publish 100% of interviews you do, but there’s some I think might’ve been better left unpublished.
Either way take that as constructive criticism. You’re doing a great job with this channel.
We tried different ways. Normally broader audience prefer shorter videos.
And yes, we normally do a lot of post production. For 20 minutes final product I shoot 60 minutes of content at least.

The guy,, Glenn ,, has perhaps interacted with a certain segment of society … aspiring artists from the middle/ lower middle classes. Obviously they are the creative types who are different in temperament from the intellectual professionals. So …his perspective would be somewhat skewed.
Some over generalizations include…
- that most Indians live in overcrowded apartments. Maybe in some less fortunate parts of Mumbai.
Being a huge metropolis there are many suburbs and many stratas in Mumbai…
- you can easily find hi tech equipment for yr kitchen… if needed
- among the yuppy culture the male dominance is less prevalent esp if the female is equally educated …
- not all Bollywood movies are formulaic ,,
and many art movies are serious themed based on the ironies of society’s lives,, topic like social expectations vs individual desires etc,, the struggle of the average man etc
- to compare china n india is fallacious as the former is a communist regime whilst India is a living democracy.
Overall this perspective is very personal and ,,if not generalized ,,it is still authentic and valid. I will still rate it as an enjoyable
