  • @finaldarkfire
    @finaldarkfire 5 лет назад +429

    From an aesthetics perspective, you don't actually NEED to remove the iconic Bridge/Observation Tower. You just need to move the actual BRIDGE out of it and bury it deep in the superstructure. You can still use the tower for sensors, observation and starfighter coordination, just don't have it fill a disproportionately vital role given how exposed it is.

    • @Riceball01

      In other words, build a CIC (Combat Information Center) into it and leave the bridge for navigation and controlling the ship.

    • @finaldarkfire
      @finaldarkfire 5 лет назад +33

      @@Riceball01 Honestly, for a flagship like the Executor which is almost always going to be commanding/coordinating very large operations with potentially dozens of other ships, the CIC is probably going to be equally as vital as the bridge itself, meaning you'd want it just as well protected, ie; buried just as deep in the superstructure.

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 лет назад +24

      @@finaldarkfire That's where the CIC is normally located, in the middle of the hull somewhere. In addition to a CIC, considering what you said about an Executor acting as a flagship, it also needs a flag bridge where the fleet commander can coordinate with and command the other ships under his immediate command. It's stupid for an Admiral to be commanding his own flagship in addition to commanding the other ships in his fleet/task force; that's what flag captains are for.

      Oh fuck you should read "The Deathworlders." Most space battles involving the human navy begins with a salvo of gravity spikes to fuck with the enemy's ability to warp space, locking them down to sublight speeds.

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 5 лет назад +3

      Interdiction does not mean the enemy can't retreat. They can still try to outrun the imperial fleet on sub-light speeds until they're eventually beyond the range of the gravity well projectors. If you can't catch up on enemies fleeing on sub-light speeds using interdiction abilities is a waste of time and energy. Unless the range of gravity well generators is so large, vessel trying leave it on sub-light speeds would run out of fuel, air, water or food before can use their hyper-drives. But that's a long-term deployment, and a smaller force (an interdictor cruiser and just enough ISDs to discourage the fleeing force from going after it) would work just as well without keeping one of your most valuable assets engaged for days, maybe even weeks.
      The challenge to the empire is not destroying the enemy. Star Destroyers can handle most of the destroying without the need to bring in an SSD. The challenge is to find the enemy, pin them down and bring in enough forces to take them out. Interdictor cruisers are much cheaper and therefore (probably) a lot more common and more widely deployed than SSDs and should arrive at engagements long before an SSD can. In that situation the interdiction ability is already present in the battle and the SSD doesn't need to bring it in. And if the enemy is actually gunning for the SSD, you wouldn't want need to interdict them, because they're coming for it anyway. If the attack has actually some chances to succed you'd be off better retreating the SSD instead of making the hyperdrive impossible.

    If the Super Star Destroyer had the same amount of plot armor as the _Millennium Falcon_ had, it would never have been destroyed. The ship was on the far side of the moon and it suddenly teleported over the Death Star. When the shields - which managed to hold up during bombardment from an asteroid field - were destroyed, somehow taking out the (primary?) bridge caused the ship to list and turn and be suddenly overwhelmed by the Death Star's gravity field.
    If those "graviton torpedoes" were viable, then every Star Destroyer would have them and it would totally redo the galaxy. I do think having gravity field generators in SSDs and other "super large" ships would be a good idea. The ship carries enough fighters that other fighters really shouldn't be a major concern. Although, Lancer Frigates should always escort and SSD.

    i still think the best quick fix of a ssd or any empire ship is take a lancer, strap on some docking clamps and have them litter the sides. back and bottom of the ships they are docked to, instant fighter coverage, jump in un-dock and just cover the big target with field of fire, or just stay docked slave the turrets to a mass PDS and light the space around the ssd with fire.
    One upside is all the power needed is supplied with the lancer
    Two is if your low of crew just keep them docked run the fire from a central control.
    An isd2 with say 4 lancer on top and 4 on the bottom covering it would be a fighters nightmare. also if another system was needed say a ship with a coms jamming system just clamping/dock one of them in the middle, hay look own shield and the isd shield protecting it even better a flack screen keeping at bay those pesky target runs.
    isd a bit to slow to chase down fleeing life pods well detach and hunt those rebel scum....

    That was a great video. I agree with your points, but here's my suggestions anyway:
    1) get rid of the cityscape. You can't effectively cover every trench with anti fighter weapons, so get rid of the vulnerability.
    1A) Also smooth out the rim trench on the side, make the dorsal and ventral armour meet like the leading edge of a wing rather than having a trench rim.
    2) relocate some of the big guns to the back. Ideally, no blind spots where anything bigger than a strike cruiser could hide comfortably. To tie in with 1A, move the guns from the now absent trench rim to dorsal and ventral turrets, 50:50 split between top and bottom.
    3) make the bridge a less tempting target and less vulnerable generally. Preferably, place it inside the ship behind a lot of armour and a few decks. If not, maybe just on the surface with a few meters of armour plating instead of on a tower with a thin neck. Makes it harder for crazy A-wing pilots to kamakazi the bridge and disable the ship.
    4) make it smaller. Smaller size means less mass means better maneuverability. Also means smaller target profile at longer range.
    5) interdiction tech. I don't mind the form, whether it's a built in bubble or a deployable buoy or even a 418 Immobiliser docked in the hangar. Just have something.
    6) have a few backups, and backups of the backups. Backup shield generators, secondary bridge, secondary reactors in case the primaries are damaged. Redundancy is important on a ship this big. That way the enemy can't just blast out one spot to disable you completely.
    7) have a variety of weapons. Long range, short range, rapid fire, light, heavy, big, small, you name it. But don't just spread it randomly. Think where the enemy will be, where they're likely to be, and where you will want them to be, and adapt to that likelihood with the appropriate weaponry.

    All the little guns on such a huge ship is like building a Yamato-class battleship, then filling it out in nothing but .50cal machine guns.
    Giant guns evidently do exist in Star Wars, besides Mandator IV and its giant cannons, there's also Hoth's planetary ion cannon and Subjugator-class's mega ion cannon. Instead of all the little guns imagine a SSD with a dozen super firing turrets down it's centre line armed with capital weapons of that scale.

    In Legends, I always imagined that there were 3 different sizes of Super Star Destroyers. The 19km Executor class, an 8km mini-Executor that is a very similar design just scaled down, and a set of 12km SSDs that had no standard class but instead individually built ships that followed the Star Destroyer design philosophy, such as the oddball Megador.

    The cityscape of the Super Star Destroyer reminds me a bit of the Disney Castle in that sheer arrogance sabotages its functionality.
    The complex cityscape emphasizes the size of the ship, trench runs be damned.
    The Disney Castle squanders its bailey with buildings rather than provide room for anti-siege trebuchets.

    For me I would smooth out the sides and superstructure but then add the layered superstructure style of ships like the Fan made Titan class or the Eclipse so the bridge is tougher and more difficult to reach. And perhaps add smaller guns to the rear and dedicate the sides to hangers and let the bottom hull be for storage of ground attack vehicles since the Executor was also a carrier of sorts.

  • @skipperg4436

    In Star Wars generally bigger objects tend to have stronger shields, however for the same sized objects guns > shileds.
    So to make super star destroyer useful it have to be a platform for Big Bad Gun that can penetrate regular star destroyer shields with ease and be nigh-invulnerable to their guns.
    It would also need an escort fleet that would screen her from smaller ships that can fly within the shield and damage her.
    Ideal escort vessel for her would be Venator class ship that can carry large number of interceptors.
    Would be a killer fleet.
    PS. For whatever reason nobody in SW Universe uses droid piloted one way (suicide) fighter-like vessels loaded with some sort of explosive payload. AKA "anti-ship cruise missiles". Nothing in SW Universe makes sense if you think about it...

    Absolutely love these fixes Eck, seriously well rounded analysis of the Executor class' problems and very good solutions to them! If I were to add anymore changes to this list it would include burying the bridge within the depths of the vessel itself (Covenant warship style) and adding docking clamps or hangar bays of sufficient size to carry along a handful of light capital ships (I'd lean towards a few Arquitens and Raiders perhaps, something of a small support fleet, again Halo style like UNSC Infinity). This may lead to too great a focus on a carrier role rather than more direct destruction however I think being around 10 kilometers in length there would be plenty of space for all the armaments you would add and give a much needed boost to versatility. Even alongside numerous Star Destroyers and the few other vessels Death Squadron utilized, why not include extras that can be deployed at a moment's notice when an enemy fleet is amassed in response?

I also figure that the armour on this improved SSD would laugh at anti-starfighter lasers, so the Lancers wouldn't have to worry about never hitting it.

    I'd increase the height towards the back a bit while keeping it sloped to a point at the front to minimise the interference of weapons turrets in the firing arcs of other weapons, so more weapons can be faced forward. It also adds space for rearward facing weapons.
    Adding a few thousand concussion missile launchers (similar to the ones Jango Fett used on Obi Wan but updated versions) would seem to be a good idea though, even if they're single fire weapons. Have a big mass launched missile volley to kill most of any incoming fighters and bomber strikes headed towards the ship or fire off the missiles as part of an enhanced alpha stike on an enemy fleet to try and knock out their ships quickly.

    Very good points Eck! Here's more:
    6. That thing is a literal starbase with its size, even at 10 km. This should be used as a mobile factory for TIE fighters, missiles, and be able to produce ship spare parts and help maintain and repair Star Destroyers.
    7. A superlaser would be overkill and far too much tech challenge. However, an axial hyper velocity railgun would be handy.
    8. Paint it pitch black and reduce the lighting of the viewports so that it merges with background space. Put the kind of sensor hammers that were on the Death Star 2, and paint the escort Star Destroyers in the same way. Then watch the rebels aimlessly searching for the imperial fleet until it's too late.
    9. You kinda mentioned it, but not using such a giant ship as at least a partial fighter carrier would be criminal. That thing must house at the very least five wings of fighters.
    10. More powerful tractor beams. That thing should be able to pull a cruiser into its optimum range and firing arc to tear it apart.

    The entire idea of the "cityscape" on executor was a morale thing. Make it look like Coruscant and the crew will want to defend "Imperial center" more than some random ship. The rear of the ship was more of a heat sink than anything else bleeding off the energy from the generators inside...it could not go...
    Now I don't know how the Disney crap has things, but the long range turbolasers we're in development at the time of Hoth...after that yes I 100% agree...and also let's point out the vulnerability to proton torpedoes...there are several shield types that could reduce proton torpedoes effectiveness but they were used on small ships like the Immobilizer and Carracks. Lancer frigates I believe had them too.
    The reason for no interdiction field generators is the amount of power draw. Interdictors usually had diminished weaponry because they lacked sufficient power to handle them.
    Weapons placements above the hull worked on Lancers and Carracks...why not SSDs? That's my big question

    For the most part, it's pretty much a shame that a structure that large pretty much can't effectively glass whatever comes near it with firepower. Covering nearly every inch of the entire ship in weaponry, adding the interdiction field generators and removing the cityscape (despite that being one of my favorite parts of the design as a whole) would probably be my major changes. I might also add a few more hangers especially to the top and bottom to help better scramble fighters where needed when an enemy squadron comes close. They may not be as big as the main hangers but they'll be useful to apply pressure to any fighters before the main force can get there. In addition, same as with the regular Star Destroyers, I think a secondary completely redundant bridge hidden within the main body of the SSD that could take over duties if the first is destroyed is important. In fact, if you wish, you could use the "primary bridge" as a sort of trap to get fighters to focus on that while arming the surrounding area to the point that you need to be suicidal to even approach it.
    You're already talking about a super large and super expensive flagship. It could definitely be armed a bit better. The size is overall fine with me, but it's not utilized in an intelligent way. The Tarkin Doctrine could work with this, but you need to give professional soldiers on the opposition a reason to actually fear its presence.

Not just the main 3 (TIE Fighter, Bomber, and Interceptor ) but Storm Commando TIE Hunters, TIE Avengers, TIE Defenders, TIE Interdictors, Assault Gunboats, Missile Boats, and Skipray Blastboats ) . Since it has an escort fleet , I would strip down the walkers and garrison base storage and just go all out on starfighters. Also, since it is so damn big, maybe house a half-dozen gunships or corvettes inside, modified for anti-starfighter duties ? Launch them when attacking Rebels to be support for your starfighters...

    It might be verry usefull to have onboard of the executor dreadnought some docking cradles for fast and agile frigates (halo, Infinity ship style). Such (de-facto defensive mini-fleet) might help with covering the rear of the ship, extending the range of operations from the dreadnought and provide the best "lifeboat" you can imagine, when the dreadnought gets too damage. The anti-trench run devices are the easiest - If the trench does have some technical REASON behind its existence, simply connect the steel cables into a net on the edges of the trench. In speed and from a distance (ie from the cockpit of the interceptor), the cables will be invisible, until the X wings loose their wings (or gets otherwise sliced apart). A few dozens of nets on each side of the trench, and the enemy pilots, used to exploit this construction trait, gets sliced.

    Install big anti-ship cannons, a huge beam cannon on the bow that can one shot a large enemy cruiser like the Eclipse, and have a hardened secondary bridge where the hull is the strongest and it'd be a real dreadnought.

    The only fixed SSD is a dead or captured SSD. Lol

    YES, thank you! These are all very smart changes you're making here! I especially hate the veritable city full of skyscrapers on the dorsal surface of the ship. Not only is it a vulnerability, but it serves no reak purpose, and to top it all off, it just looks plain ugly! The lack of an exposed bridge is just common sense, as is the replication of the dorsal armament on the ventral surface, in my opinion. Another common sense change is to add just a metric shit-ton of point-defense turrets strategically placed across the surface of the ship. One more improvement that you and I are both fond of, is multiple discrete and redundant shield generators like Mon Calamari ships.
