Unfortunately, if you wanted to attract the kind of people who would really be great Members of Parliament and run the country well we would need one of the following things to happen:
      1) Pay them wages more equivalent to what they could get in the private sector.
      Or
      2) require experience at lower levels of government in order to stand as a candidate for Parliament.
For me, number 2 is the more viable but if you really want to have the best minds running the country, elected officials at all levels of government need to be paid more, as do civil servants.
Why would you become an MP making 100,000 per year when you could make ten or twenty times that in the private sector?
Still, I wouldn't want to pay this lot of MPs, especially the Tory ones, 500,000 per year...

The problem, from a propaganda perspective, is that Truss' policies are basically an impossible sell. Things like Brexit, you could translate it in ways that sound appealing to the average voter. But how do you sell "rich people will get richer and in some way that's going to help you" to the person in the streets who's having to decide between bills and food? You can't. She's spent so long in the wealthy Tory safe space that she has no clue how real people think.

@Tom records of GNP/GDP began only in 1930-something - so not very long really. I recommend Doughnut Economics if you want to hear another view and a resounding critique of the concept of GDP and what it measures. Engrossing the economy in financial terms has little or nothing to do with well-being and sustainability. Truss's emphasis on growth and 'trickle-down economics' is an excuse for enabling the rich to get richer while the institutions that support society as a whole like the NHS, the legal system, education, environmental protections etc. are being gutted

Mobile internet and cloud computing have been the only thing keeping it moving by draggings its coffin to the final resting place. Tech improvement, as it exists today, has been stagnating since the late 2010s. There is no low-hanging fruit left at least not in the short term.
Meanwhile, all the promising UK tech darlings of the last 25 years have moved to the States. ARM is just the last of the great British tech companys to be launching their IPO in New York instead of London, due to political turmoil.

This isn’t sensible. The Tories are supposed to be for fiscal responsibility but that is anti-growth. Labour is for more social spending and potentially bigger budgets which is pro-growth. Fiscal stimulus to promote growth is primarily done through increased government spending (labour) or through reducing government income, cutting taxes (Tory). So the issue isn’t growth, it’s how you achieve it; entitlement payments for the poor (bottom up) or tax cuts for the higher earners (top down).
