  • This back yard was holding water with no clear solution. We piped the gutter water to the street, taking that water off the back to help alleviate the standing water.

    My suggestion is to tell them to remove the leaf guard system they are nothing but trouble. I do the same work as you do and run into this all the time. Leaf guards do such a great job of keeping the leafs out a lot of times they keep the water out especially in a downpour.

    I always learn something new from your videos, Shawn. In this case, putting two downspouts on a long gutter to help take care of the capacity. That will help with my over-burdened gutters which can't always manage big downpours. Thanks! 👍👍

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Год назад +2

      My gutter guy explains it using a funnel as an example. No matter how large the funnel is, the limiting factor is the outlet of the funnel being smaller. Add more outlets (downspouts) to create multiple points of exit. I assume gutter contractors don't do this to save money in a way that no one notices.

    Hi Shaun, that gutter guard is the problem. Hardly any holes in it to let the rain water through, so it acts like ski jump and water doesn’t stop at the gutter and goes straight over the edge. Just remove the gutter guard all together as any leaves and debris will go down the down pipe and all the way to the street. With PVC pipe there is nothing to stop or snag it. Cheers Steve from Australia

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Год назад +2

      I thought about that too. Perhaps we could remove that last panel of gutter guard next to the downspout?

    • @I_must_get_a_van
      @I_must_get_a_van Год назад +1

      @@GCFD that gutter guard does not allow the water to get through it quick enough. If it is just steady light rain it would be ok but anything any heavier then the ski jump comes into effect. My house in Australia has never had any form of gutter guard for 40 odd years when it was built and we have 4inch PVC pipe and never any blockages.

      @@GCFD I'd definitely follow up with the homeowner to see if water skips over that gutter when it's raining heavily. We had lots of problems on a similar steep roof pitch, and had to remove the gutterguard to allow water to land in the gutter.

    I'd like to suggest that when you dig that you have a slope'er guy & a dig guy. The slope guy would be looking toward the home & digging at the ideal low-slope. A regular shovel dig can fit an 8 inch pipe so the hand-dug quotes might have a price that allows for larger pipe. 8-inch pipe can almost be level where in my city they use a concrete-CB to then run triple 4-inch pipes through the curb that are 2ft apart (triple 4 through the curb is the city's limit).

    In Minnesota, there is a required 24" from the cutting edge of the equipment to the located facility, so if there is a 20" conduit pipe, add 24" to each side. Its against the law to use any machine to dig within the tolerance zone. I'm not surprised the utilities were off. Here I think they can be at least +/- 3 feet from the utility without any liability.

    I have a very similar issue and plan to do the same, the water runs past the gutters in heavy rain, because my roof pitch is too high, i plan on adding more downspouts but again the water skips past on high torrential storms.
    My 2nd plan also it do a whole french drain on that whole side of the house, this will take care of the water that skips past the gutters and splashes down below on rhe flat land next to the house. I do have a gradual drop towards the backyard, my problem digging that french drain is going to be all the roots from a nearby oak tree. I love this channel by the way ive learned so much. Its all a process of elimination and moving water away from the house.

    The height of the fall is determined by the height of the PVC pipe "sealed connection" to the down spout pipe. You could get your down hill spout to carry rain water over a 5 foot obstable as long as your connection pipe is a couple of feet higher than that 5 foot obstable...and all the PVC pipe is welded together between both ends. Simple...just like your city water towers are connected to a very tall "water tower". Their pipes rise and fall continuously because their water source is so high "and" the water is flowing thru a sealed pipe.

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Год назад +1

      Great point Larry. The 1:1 ratio of the pipe wouldn't give you as much head as a water tower though. Those create a huge delta P to provide water pressure to the city.

    Great video, well done on the hand trenching think it saved a lot of pain! My thoughts about the over flowing gutter is that the gutter guard is not allowing the water through quick enough in heavy rain. Maybe removing some or all of it on that stretch would cure the problem. I think now you have the PVC run to kerb it would be self cleaning, guess that is the owner’s call based on the amount of “leafage” there is around. In the uk there is a gutter guard called Hedgehog, it’s like an oversized, bristly pipe cleaner that lays in the gutter, think that would work well if you guys have such a thing. 👋🇬🇧😀

    I hope to be a homeowner soon and these videos have given me so much to think about when inspecting houses.
    for the core drilling, could you fabricate a brace that hooks over the curb and comes around the back of the drill to provide the needed force?. you would be able to stop using the skid steer as a brace
    you could also maybe fit a jack to the brace that could be cranked by by a hand held power drill.
    Love the videos Shawn keep it up!

      Thank you! I'm glad you've gained some value from my channel. No one ever considers drainage when buying a house and I have seen new homeowners who have flooding within a week of purchasing! I really like the idea of a brace that hooks the curb. That could be awesome.

    While the back and side are pretty level the front has a fair drop so a pipe running at a constant grade from the back to the curb would flow but it does require a constant change in the depth of the trench.

    As a home owner who had the gutters and roof under the control of the condo board. I have had nothing but issues with their new installation. The volume of water that comes to a 6 foot span of gutter with leaf guard is just not able to keep up. Excellent job but from my experience i would suggest you bring that roof exit to the gutter. The neighbours who have a similar output on their roof have nothing but problems. The condo board and management company can't see the forest for the trees. Dealing with people who think they know is such a problem Every major rainfall the river that flies off my roof and rips the mulch of of the community flower beds is nothing that can be corrected. All I asked was to remove the leaf guard to see the difference. The idiotic replies were amazing. Everything from: its there for insurance purposes, Leaf control from my Locust tree (very tiny leaves), to the engineers have decided it is required to be there. I couldn't handle that level of incompetence any further. I was amazed.

    Hey Shawn, question, and maybe an idea: what if you heated up the pipe with a torch to make the end more flexible so it's not so difficult to run it into the curb? Or maybe cut a 1/4 inch strip out of the pipe (lengthwise) so that the remainder can more easily squeeze into the curb? Just some thoughts. I've been following you for a long time now and enjoy all your videos 💯

      Pound in a smaller section that would be less susceptible to bend force and just couple to it to complete.

    • @ipaddlemyowncanoe.7441
      @ipaddlemyowncanoe.7441 Год назад +2

      I've done locate for years. Sometimes there's two lines there for three lines. One's been abandoned already and those ones that they found could have been old lines or the new lines and the person you did. The locates doesn't know that there's not very good records for the cable and the Bell companies when they're doing their work so they could have uncovered the good lines and the guy marked the deadlines. Who knows unless you cut them and you find out. But that's not how you do it. They did a good job.

    Something else the Home Owner should do to get rid of the pond is build up the shrub bed so it's higher than the grass and slope it away from the house...
    An alternative is instead of building the sunken area up, you can add a French Drain along the edge of the sunken area bordering the grass and channel it into either the pipe where it turns to run to the street or, if there isn't enough Fall, end it in a Drain Pit and run the Sump Pump pipe to the PVC at that 90...

  • @HKRXPRS

  • @5tevec368
    @5tevec368 Год назад

    Undersize gutter on steep pitched roofs will always overflow, hence the standing water following a downpour.
    If your gutter’s drainage area is 1,000 square feet, your pitch factor is 1.1, and the rainfall intensity in your area is 6.8 inches per hour, then your adjusted square footage will be 7,480 (1,000 x 1.1 x 6.8 = 7,480), this example requires a minimum 6 inch deep flow gutter. If unsure consult gutter manufacturer for size requirements.

    The style of gutter guards that have do not work with steep roofs. They block 75% of the flow into the gutters. They either need to not have guards, or a screen style guard.

    That car driving with hazards in the rain, dunno why, look e like they were having trouble, I would have gone another lane over. Lol, but I'm in Phoenix where when it rains everyone loses their minds. Although it bearly rains here, but when it does, it comes down so fast and hard you can't see your hood out your windshield and you can bearly see tail lights and you slow down to 10mph on the freeway where normal is 75+.... Hoping not to get hit. Which is how we get flash floods. Lol

    I am amazed at watching your jobs where storm water dosen't drain to the kerbside in the street or to a designated council stormwater pipe in an easement on the each property as they do here in Melbourne Australia you cannot just drain a stormwater pipe into a stone pit in the ground

      @GCFD  Год назад

      You're seeing the worst cases on my channel so don't forget about all the downspouts that drain out and don't cause any issues. 👍

  • @ipaddlemyowncanoe.7441
    @ipaddlemyowncanoe.7441 Год назад +4

    That was a good one, but don't you think maybe sometimes that gutter guard is causing the problem because it's not letting all the water into it. It's the water's hitting it and splashing off onto the ground, so maybe in some cases like that that gutter guard could be causing the problem. There's not any trees around so I don't think you'd have to worry about it. Like if there is trees hanging over the house that's one thing. But there's no trees anywhere near that so maybe removing the gutter guard first might solve the problem. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
