Thank you for doing this! I am a brand new stitcher and have searched high and low for a great tutorial for the Mill Hill kits, you nailed it. I started one and thought the threads seemed too skimpy. Now I see that the beads really do a lot of the work to give the fullness and dimension. I will save this tutorial and watch it again when I re-start my kit. Many thanks, Holly
I'm so happy it was helpful! Take note that when you do the cross stitching part, it calls for 3 strands of floss. That helps give better coverage! Good luck!
Christine thank you so much for making this video. You gave me a lot of tips. I only have tried cutting out one of my perforated paper stitches and got frustrated. Watching you and listening to you was really helpful. I love the hook you used - what a great idea!!!! Great video! Have a wonderful weekend!
Lovely tutorial. I never seen glue seep through felt like that before. Thanks for sharing us your learning experiences and what worked for you. I wasn't done with my "newbie tip" relating to my first Mill Hill finish. I am sooooo glad you put yours up before mine as I can edit it out and have a shorter video. Thank Christine!
awwwwww, don't edit it out! there can never be too many newbie tips out there! We all do things in our own unique way ( a good friend once told me that before I made this video because I didn't think I really had anything new to offer). If it helps even one person than its worth it!
Appreciate the shared thoughts on tips for stitching. I was very happy you uploaded yours as I was about to apply my felt behind my mill hill and even searched on RUclips, and there wasn't an example. Your the first! Yay... it helped me!!!
Perfect timing! I'm just finishing my first Mill Hill kit. It's the pine cone from the winter holiday collection. I wasn't sure I was doing the beading right and now I know I am. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I'm about to start on my first Mill Hill beaded kit (the sea turtle) and wasn't confident I was understanding the kit instructions properly. It very much has helped to *see* how to attach the beeds! I also loved your idea of finishing with the jewelry pin as a hanger.
Thanks so much for the beading tutorial. It was a great help , since I'm working on a Mirabilia and eventually will be beading. Don't think I've watched your videos before. I've watched Riley and really enjoy his videos.
Thank you Vonna! I'm sure with your finishing expertise, you can think of a more creative way to finish these ☺. If so, please share! I love your tutorials!
Using that jewelry wire thing is genius! I wonder... have you thought of tucking it into your stitches before you glue it? Just for extra support? I thought for sure that's what you were going to do. Love it!
Funny you should mention that....I did try it and it doesn't work! I think because the jewelry hook has a blunt edge and it's a bit thicker that a needle so I would've really had to force it and I didn't want to rip a hole in the paper. Good idea, though ;)
I really enjoyed your video, and I think you done a great job :) Making RUclips videos is not easy to start with, and then to top it off trying to explain and show what to do. I personally enjoyed watching you! I also bought felt to back mine with, but have yet to give it a try. I have also backed my with brown paper you can buy on a roll :)
thanks I've been doing it wrong and got so frustrated with my last mirabilia but now feel more confident it won't be so hard now that i know the correct way :)
I have several of these kits, but they seemed kind of intimidating to me, so I have yet to start any. But, you've made it look so easy! Thanks for your tutorial. I love both the mallard & the s'mores finishes! 😊
Great video! Thanks for the idea ofnusing a jewelry hook. I've only used cording before on the 2 Mill Hill ornaments I've made. I also used felt on the back but I trimmed it to size before glueing it. Also using a paint brush is smart...better than applying it straight from the bottle and using my finger! ha!
Thank you! You reminded me that I wanted to run some hand made cording through the metal loop as an alternative to a Xmas tree hook. It will give it a more hand made look! Thanks for watching:)
Thank you for posting this! When I finished my last MH kit (my first), I tried Ailenes' tacky glue, I applied it too heavily at the top, it bled through and darkened the stitches of the Angels face. Thankfully it dried clear and all was well. I eventually used hot glue to affix the felt. My question is, do you think it would work to apply the felt first, and then cut out both layers at the same time?
I'm glad it all worked out! I considered cutting both layers at the same time as well, and I think it can be done with the right scissors. Because I use small scissors, I didn't think they would be up to the task. wouldn't hurt to try, though.
Hi Calico :) Have you done any of the bigger mill hill kits? & if so, how do you finish them off? I have 2 completed and have no idea how to finish them!
As a matter of fact, I've finished 2 of the bigger ones and I display them alternately in the frames made by Mill Hill. You can get them on 123 Stitch. ( I personally think are are poorly made for the price and would recommend finding a different frame that size).
Ok, I found them. I show the finishes in my first video at the 11:30 mark and I show one in the frame on my 5th video at the 3:15 mark. Hope that helps! Also, if you really want to see better pictures of them (because the videos have poor lighting) you can see them on Flickr here www.flickr.com/photos/calico67/albums/72157632069052808
Those are called Eye Pins and I think I used 2 inch. I bought them at a local craft store so I don't have a link, but I'm sure you can find them easily online. However, before you buy them, you might want to watch an update method of finishing using a beaded loop that I do now. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/0If-pVbZiog/видео.html
Suggestion: Maybe be prepared with needle threaded and everything ready to go. I lost interest watching you fumble around. Maybe get it altogether then explain how difficult threading the needle, etc. I'll have to watch you another time when I have the patience. Thank you though for you kind effort.

Fun to watch :)
What exactly are the jewelry hooks that you use? Do you have a link for them?

very nice............
Thank you!
I think I would have traced the mallard on the felt and then cut it out before gluing the two pieces together
Good idea! That would certainly work as well. I think I would change a few things about the way I did things here 😂
Thought you should put your initials and date (year) of completion on the back....
That is a great idea and I should've mentioned doing that. It would be easy to stitch it onto the felt before gluing it!
Suggestion: Maybe be prepared with needle threaded and everything ready to go. I lost interest watching you fumble around. Maybe get it altogether then explain how difficult threading the needle, etc. I'll have to watch you another time when I have the patience. Thank you though for you kind effort.
M Person Yes, I agree I should've edited that part out...... 😬
