It pains me to say this but unfortunately Bray Wyatt passed away last year due to a heart attack. He was 36 years old.
    RIP.

I was watching an aftergame report on ESPN that was being co-hosted by Booker T(a former wrestler) when they announced Bray Wyatt had died. He looked completely stunned and had to ask if it was real, when the other co-host confirmed it, he looked so sad and hurt.
Less than a week ago we lost Virgil.

Regarding Kurt Angle's line about celibacy at 8:31: He was presented as the whitest of white-bread American heroes at the time (aka a massive dork). His opponent in this scene is The Godfather, whose gimmick is that of an actual pimp, who would frequently be accompanied by a large group of women (aka Ho's), that he would offer to his opponents in exchange for letting him win the match. Given this was the 90's, he was naturally extremely popular.

the "too sweet" salute is also known as the "Wolfpac kiss" when nWo Black and red/Wolfpac used it. Yes I'm a wrestling nerd .the thumb, middle and ring finger come together to form the "wolf's face" and the index and pink fingers are the ears.

Antonio Inoki's match against Muhammad Ali was a "mixed styles" fight. a precursor of what became UWF rules which is "Shoot Wrestling" a type of pro wrestling match presented as a more legitimate contest, a variation of "Mixed Styles fighting' would become the modern Mixed Martial Arts.

Pro-Wrestling was around since the early 1900s and slowly transitioned from a real sport riddled with corrupt match fixing to pure entertainment. The cracking down on sports betting and match fixing was actually what caused it to become pure entertainment. Because the matches became ridiculously long and boring once wrestlers no longer had an insentive to lose (to make money off of betting). So, in the 1920s a few promotors merged pro-wrestling with carnival wrestling (which had been fake since the 1800s) and it ended up becoming popular. Thats when they introduced kicks and strikes and more vibrant personalities etc.

The thing about Bret Hart wasn’t that he was too invested in his character, he just utterly despised Shawn Michaels the person, who (at the time) WAS very invested in his character. Michaels once faked an injury so he didn’t have to lose to Bret Hart himself, and later backstage even told Hart _to his face_ that he would _never_ let his character lose a championship to Bret Hart. So, somewhat understandably, Hart made it clear that he wouldn’t treat Michaels any better than Michaels would treat Hart. If he had to lose to Michaels, it couldn’t be in Canada, and if he had to lose in Canada, it couldn’t be to Shawn Michaels.
There’s an online documentary by Cultaholic called "Screwed: The Complete Story of The Montreal Screwjob" if you want all the details to the most infamous moment in all of professional wrestling, and it arguably goes more in-depth than any other media on the topic. And trust me, there’s a *_LOT_* of media that brings up the Montreal Screwjob in some capacity…

Not that I am going to justify New Jack, but the guy he threw off the top of the scaffolding trying to kill. Was the same guy that landed on New Jacks head on a concrete floor, resulting in New Jack fracturing his skull and getting a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), which left him blind in one eye. So New Jack isn't playing crazy he just is Crazy.

So a few things from a hardcore wrestling fan.
The 'Golddust trio' who were some of the earliest organizers of scripted wrestling shows and the, at least spiritual, founders of the National Wrestling Alliance started promoting in the 1910s. With evidence of agreed to matches between circus strongmen as far back as the 1880s.
The 2020 New Japan Cup was part of a far shortened "season" due to the particular virus that was prevalent that year. The NJC is a single elimination tournament that takes place early in the year with the winner getting a title shot in March/April. They then have a second tournament, round robbin, late summer called the G1 to determine the number one contender for wrestle kingdom in January the next year. In 2020 NJPW had to condense a year of story (NJC,G1, All of the other stories to tell) all into about 5 months. It was a sprint. Also...G1 is coming up. All marches on new Japan world. Like 9 bucks a month. Just saying.

Also yes, there are several countries where pro-wrestling is a thing, though bigger in some than others. Mexico, for example, has a long-standing wrestling (or lucha) scene.

AEW its a new company that directly competes with WWE
Since it was funded by a really rich man they actually pay the wrestlers more than WWE and try to threaten WWE´s status as the Wrestling king, it has a lot of success with people who don't like WWE.

One thing you should know about wrestling: rapid and frequent matches have been a thing for a long time. Pressuring or forcing wrestlers to perform in the ring near constantly, regardless of the damage to their bodies (or any injuries they might currently have) is such a problem that, historically, there've been cases of wrestlers having broken bones, having gotten out of surgery just the day before, etc, etc, and basically just getting shoved fistfuls of painkillers and told to get out there. Often to ill effect.
Wrestlers aren't included in the Actors Guild of America because they aren't considered actors. They also aren't considered athletes participating in a sport, at least not since the 90s, and so all legal protections and standards that are supposed to be in place for those are also ignored. WWE claims that their wrestlers are independent contractors, but they effectively have a monopoly on US wrestling and also often use contracts that restrict the wrestler's ability to perform with any other companies. Wrestlers do not have a union and have little to no protection, essentially because the wrestling industry itself grew up from corrupt carny roots and never really changed its tune, even if the particular arrangements shifted a bit. Thanks a lot, Vince McMahon.

Singles Match: A traditional One V. One match, but also usually called that most prevalently when one or both participants are part of a team or stable, and are therefore fighting as a "Single."
Tag Team: Traditionally, a two-person team that engages other teams. Sometimes there is a third member, either temporary or permanent.
Doubles match: A Tag Team match, though calling it a Doubles match is often a sign that it is the opposite of a Singles match i.e. the members of the team or teams are usually NOT part of a tag team or stable.
Trios Match: Generally more rare than a Tag Team (or Doubles) match. Each team has three members, though usually this means that a Tag Team has taken on a temporary third member, though some teams of three or more do exist. Most prevalent in Mexico and Japan.
Freebird Rule: When a team of three or more permanent members rotate to defend or contend for a title. Usually there is a set of usual team members (the Tag Team) who have permanent team members who may step in to provide assistance, work an angle, or are available when their other team members are absent. Named after legendary team The Fabulous Freebirds.
Stable: A faction or team with more than two members. May consist of differing genders, weight classes, assigned roles, etc., but all under the same team organization.

Speaking of the wrestlers having to fight the next day and being sore... NJPW has a tournament every year called G1 Climax which is a round robin tournament that lasts about two months where the wrestlers have to compete nearly every (or every other) night until it's finished. And often, some will get legit injured and still choose to power through it. As long as it isn't serious, but I've seen several continue to fight with broken wrists, fractures, etc. Even the welts and bruises from the previous night still visible. It's pretty intense.

I'm from Argentina, and I don't have much of a background in being a fan of wrestling, but there was a popular circuit back in the day known as "Titanes en el ring" (Titans on the ring) in the 50's and 70's. There was also a similar concept done around the mid-2000s known as 100% Lucha, which I casually watched back when. I remember it being super campy and silly, and the concepts were ridiculous. The concepts reminded me a lot of the cheap Mortal Kombat knockoffs. From what I know, even years after the program is over the Face of 100% Lucha, Vicente Viloni, is still regarded as an icon and highly esteemed for being such a cool guy. The guy is still working as a freelance wrestler and doing pretty well.

  • @supersasukemaniac

54:11 the way they did it in 2020, was that New Japan Cup's earlier rounds took place in an Empty Korukean Hall, the finals was a two day event at Osaka-Jo Hall, Night one was the actual final of the Tournament, Night 2 was another major show called Dominion all wrapped together as a two night special to celebrate having the fans back in attendance. There's an even more grueling tournament called G1 Climax that New Japan hosts, that one is a league structure. Everyone in the same pool (each pool usually has 10 wrestlers each) fights each other once, Winners of each pool face of in a single elimination final. Winner gets a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight title at the January 4th show, Wrestle Kingdom in Tokyo Dome. it isn't unheard of for wrestlers in the G1 Climax to have to forfeit future matches in the tournament due to injury.

It really depends more on the characters and wrestlers themselves than on any America vs Japan split. For instance, the early story of the Rock draws comparison to Naito, as he started as a squeaky clean good guy, and nobody cared. Once he had enough of it, he turned heel and joined the Nation, a faction of Black wrestlers out to get revenge. And from there he would go on to develop everything that truly made him The Rock, both as a heel, and as a babyface.

  • @alexsweet6957
    @alexsweet6957 3 месяца назад +1

One thing I’ll add as I didn’t see it said much. Over in Japan wrestling is a real sport, they have press conferences after big matches, it’s big national news, it’s very traditional on the honor. As for the factions, it’s more your United under a brand. Chaos is one of the factions in NJPW with many members who would fight bullet club or L.I.J. Also over in Japan there is different divisions, you start at the junior division and work your way up to the heavyweight division, Kenny omega started in the junior division working his way up to the iwgp title
On the other hand, new jack was also part of a Philadelphia based production called E.C.W, I would suggest watching some videos to get a idea of what the 90’s based wrestling looked like.

29:15 No, that wasn't Smokey Mountain was the beginning with the not physical violence. When he went to Extreme Championship Wrestling it got really violent.
I'm not going to defend New Jack in total because he did really bad stuff. but Context is missing.
28:50 The Mass Transit incident was rough but at this point to his defense, no one from the company knew he was 17. He was a fan, his father vouched that he is older and that he had wrestling training (he didn't). So the boss of ECW thought it's okay, and that Wrestling matches got really bloody for a trained wrestler was normal in that company. So imagine what happens to an untrained 17 year old.
28:55 As context, he had a match with the same wrestler. The other guy didn't want to do a spot where they was jumping from a scaffold (or something like that) so they slipped and the other guy landed on New Jacks head, causing brain trauma. So "Dispute" is not the right word in that case. And after the brain trauma he got really crazy.
Also he was from what i heard a relative nice guy outside the ring. At least he sounds like that in real interviews. And he was loved by many fans. He died about two years ago.
And the OJ Simpson thing was actually the idea of a white guy "People will hate you for that. Make the white men mad" is a quote.

So, AEW is the second biggest wrestling company in the US, founded in 2019. And about the title, wrestlers legitimately get paid more when they hold a title (especially the top one), both because of just addition pay and because they are in higher profile matches which sell more tickets, therefore they get a bigger cut of money made. Even more importantly, titles make your character look like a big deal/strong and this is INCREDIBLY important in wrestling. If your character looks weak the fans won't get invested, which means they won't pay to see you, which means you won't get booked on shows or booked in worse positions and you won't be able to sell as much merch (how most wrestlers make most of their money). This just becomes a vicious cycle, so a character looking weak can be a death blow to careers.

22:45 also to add on, 1990s on, wins/how good you look really mattered. So having like Shawn lose to Bret, in his head, make him look weaker or less likely to be on top, plus with how he hated how Bret did matches. It is very much "I stay on top, I don't want this person to beat me, and if I have to drop the title...it is because they cheated/use tricks."

  • @jacobfederico6010

52:31 To answer your question, there usually is a separation between the singles and tag team (doubles) divisions in wrestling. Sometimes a singles star will join with another singles star to become a tag team, either for a single match or for an extended time, whereas other times two wrestlers will come in as a tag team and stay in the division for quite a while. So, for example, EVIL and Sanada both started as singles guys, but since neither guy had that much success, they became a tag team and were one for a couple of years before EVIL's turn to .... evil.

So this is a bit tangential, but its what the video starts with and is honestly one of the most interesting moments in this sport, imo. The Muhammed Ali vs Antonio Inoki is probably one of the most controversial fights in wrestling history. I'm not even a wrestling expert, but its still infamous enough that anybody with any opinion on wrestling, boxing, MMA, etc has an opinion on that fight, whether or not it was fair, who should have "actually" won it, which side came out looking worse, etc. All in all, its one of those fights that both parties came out looking much worse, publicly. The quick summary is that Ali agreed to an exhibition match (a scripted spar, basically) and once he arrived, Inoki flipped the script and said it was supposed to be a real fight all along...*unless* you believe the version of events that say it was supposed to be a "real" but rigged fight where Ali would lose in a ridiculous setup where he knocked out the ref "by accident" and Inoki then knocks him out and claims victory in front of his countrymen, but Ali refused to fix the fight, so they tried to change it so Inoki was supposed to lose but he then refused and it became a "real" fight.
Regardless of which version you believe, the actual fight itself was subject to a set of rules, which again everyone argues over who is more responsible or pressed for. Essentially, Inoki wanted an MMA match and Ali thought this was supposed to be a boxing match, and so Inoki was restricted from doing many of his "signature moves" like tackles. Ali was also restricted, but not in as significant of a way. Regardless of who pressed for it, Inoki spent most of the match on his back kicking at Ali, as one of the rules was that he couldn't kick unless he had at least one knee on the floor. This also prevented Ali from getting many blows in himself, as hitting an opponent while he was down was also restricted. Many came out saying this made Inoki look like a pathetic coward, many said it was ridiculous Inoki was restricted and thus "forced" to fight like this.
Regardless, Inoki did so much damage to Ali's legs that Ali needed serious surgery after one got infected and amputation had to be discussed. He also got two blood clots that seriously affected his future fights. Ironically, Inoki and Ali became good friends after the fight. Inoki eventually founded a political party and got elected, after which he negotiated with Sadam Hussein for those hostages. He also organized a sports event in Pyongyang, which Ali and Rick Flair both attended, and he later revealed that he'd converted to Islam before retiring from sports. Fascinating character.

Ok that is kind of unfair to New Jack. The kid had lied about his age and credentials to get into a pro match. The guy he tried to kill had basically done the same to him earlier. And his heel work was insisted on by the promoters.

      1) He still made the kid bleed way to much
      2) The Danbury fall was his fault own fault
      3) I do not care what the promoters insisted on. A sane man would reject a majority of the things he did if he was told to do it.
      4) This doesn’t excuse stabbing someone in a wrestling match or beating a 70 year old half to death after he slightly irritates you.
Don’t defend New Jack. Screw him.
