Dead or death is another word for past which is all relative to YOUR position which all has to do with time. Because we are "dead" that would make everything in the natural even as it seems to happen "now" as a past event because flesh itself is a past measurement of time. When we were separated from God we lived after or "As" our flesh or even more accurately "at the same time as our flesh" and in doing so our flesh/natural world dictated what time we were on. So when your flesh was symptomatic and giving evidence of sickness you too were sick because you're both on the same timeline. You are NOW dead and moved on but the flesh and the natural world itself remains in the same timeline and judgments of the past as it continues to act out its present/current doings. So it's like if you don't know your position to the flesh you'll be trapped to live and die opressed as and after the memory of what was even though you're free and are not supposed to be operating on its timeline.
