Butterflies are a symbol for Echidna's greed for knowledge not willing to be stopped by the realm of death. In japan Butterflies are symbols of death, or more specifically how death is the greatest change or metamorphosis we go through in our lives towards our afterlife or "next life". Essentially, Echidna's butterflies represent the potential or possibility that lies within death, with death itself not being an end but a new beginning and with it all the merits for new experiences and knowledge. This relates back to Roswaal's motto which he got from Echidna. "So long as there is life, there is future. So long as there is a future, there is hope. So long as there is hope, there is possibility. So long as there is possibility, people can be saved". As an immortality seeker you could say Echidna rejected death and said no, there is only more life. More possibilities. So with the butterflies in re:Zero representing "the possibilities in death", the season 2 first opening having Echidna grab a single butterfly and release a whole swarm of them that cover the cast represents a cascade of growing death. Which Echidna finds new information in. A representation of how she would abuse RBD countlessly. Another interpretation i really like of that opening is how Beatrice is longingly reaching out for the butterflies, but it never lands on her like it does the rest of the cast. Representing her desire to die never coming to claim her. Later in the opening you can see that she finally does catch a butterfly, but it lays dead in her hands. Symbolizing, even her chance to die has died. I really love the first opening and ending of season 2. I think they both have amazing symbolism.
*Roswaal after falling in love with just a kiss, proceeds to simp Echidna for 400 years.* 🤡 *Subaru on the other hand, after drinking her bodily fluids proceeds to forget her in only like 4 mins of interaction.* 🗿
In the Christian Theology, which itself stems from Jewish Theology, there were concepts of both "Sloth" and "Melancholy" as sins at one point. Sloth represented failure to fulfill one's spiritual obligations, such as daily prayers, offering sacrifices, performing rituals, going to temple/church, and all the other necessary actions expected to demonstrate faith and devotion. The concept was that if a person got to the point that they believed all those rituals _et al_ were meaningless and useless, and wasted time that they could use for either something more practically useful (ie. working to earn money) *or* something more hedonistically desirable (just having fun, slacking off, etc.), it usually meant they had lost their faith that God was real and the rituals had any real purpose. So what's the big deal if they don't bother with it, right? By contrast, Melancholy was the sense of hopelessness and depression of a person who believed that life and existence was fundamentally pointless. Again, this was based on the notion that they had lost faith in the existence of God, but rather than manifesting as "I've got better things to do with my time than empty, useless rituals" (Sloth); it was expressed as, "what's the point of doing *anything* if we all just die and become the same nothing in the end anyway?" (Melancholy). Eventually, the two sort of got combined and merged into a single concept, representing lack of faith in the existence of God and all forms of reaction to that mentality, whether nihilistic or hedonistic. It's similar to how Wrath can be expressed in three levels of progressively worse intensity: "against others", general violence, murder, etc.; "against God", blasphemy; and "against oneself", suicide.
@@danielantony1882 Exactly. I hadn't even noticed that, myself, but the pattern definitely fits. Furthermore, the opposite Virtue for Wrath is Patience. The "ironic quirk" of the Authority of Wrath is... ... ... ... ... ... It doesn't *actually* "cure" or "heal" people. What it does is remove "misfortune" from a person. If something "bad" has happened to them, she can strike them and "beat the misfortune" out of them. But that doesn't _destroy_ it; it still exists and has to *go* somewhere. If she uses her power to help someone, it means somewhere else an equivalent amount of "harm" befalls someone else. She doesn't want to sit and be "Patient", seeing someone come to harm right in front of her where she can reach them. Even if it means it will still bring harm to another person, that person will be somewhere distant and out of her reach, a person she wouldn't be able to help. If someone else is near them and can help them, maybe they can be saved, too. But she doesn't want to sacrifice a person within her reach merely to protect unseen, unknown "others" from randomly being dumping targets for the harm she removes from her beneficiaries.
23:40 quick history of the 7 sins: there were originally 8 (gluttony, lust, greed, despondency/melancholy, wrath, sloth, vainglory, pride) then despondency was combined with sloth, and vainglory was combined with pride, and then envy was created as its own It really is interesting how it appears the power of Melancholy appears kinda similar to Sloth's Unseen Hand. It makes me wonder if Vainglory's power is similar to Pride's Authority. Or maybe it has something to do with how there's currently no "Pride" archbishop. AND! Kinda interesting how Envy was the sin that was created on its own to complete the number 7 (after the original 8 became 6 by combining a couple of them) and how Satella, as Envy, was the one who killed and subsumed the other 6 witches.
Dang, kinda fitting, for envy to create itself.....becs like envi and all.....also I was just thinking about how melancholy might be similar to pride in powers then......
*Fun Facts and Trivias* This Roswaal has solely blue eyes, however the current one has polychromatic eyes (one blue and one yellow). Since Satella consumed Echidna at least 400 years before to being sealed, this flashback takes place more than 400 years in the past, since humans are incapable of becoming immortal (Geuse was a spirit and even he had to transition between bodies). To become immortal, even the Echidna was researching on how to become one. Roswaal spoke normally before he met Melancholy. Take note of how Melancholic's speech and current Roswaal's speech are similar. Since Hector's title in Japanese is the masculine form of *"Witch,"* most fan translations of the WN refer to him as a *"Devil."* While this translation creates a very metal title, it can become confusing if you are unfamiliar with the real world history of the deadly sins, where Acedia (though Melancholy is used here) was one of the sins that was removed along with Vanity. Vanity was absorbed into the sin of Pride and Acedia (Melancholy) was absorbed into Sloth. In addition, Yin and Yang are merely a matter of translation rather than a new form of magic. Translations used to associate Yin with *"Shadow"* and Yang with *"Light"* Speaking of accurate translations, you may have noted that *"Betelguese"* was re-translated as *"Petelguese"* earlier in the season. I brought this up because *"Petelguese"* is the canonically accurate name and is a purposeful mispelling of *"Betelguese"* which the author claims will be important in the future. The voice actor for *"Hector"* is the same as the person who plays the role of Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen and Leone Abacchio in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and other more. One of the GOATED VAs in the industry. Roswaal acts like Hector because, as Tappei said in an author's note following the most recent episode and in a Q&A, he wants to never forget the humiliation and defeat he experienced that day. It serves as a harsh reminder for him. Similar to how Emilia mimics Fortuna's speech pattern of saying *"Sugooooooku"* it's brought on by intense feelings, but instead of love, it's a combination of remorse and rage. Take note that Echidna's eyes are not shown, even once in the backstory. This is implied that it's going to be important details in the future. During the magic release era, strong magic users had to release mana that was too much for them to control (Recall back to the scene in the Memory of Snow OVA where Puck caused the entire mansion to freeze). Since it's not common for a regular human to possess such powerful magic, Roswaal didn't even know how to release it at first, which is probably why his situation looks dire on the first minute of the episode. Echidna saved him by draining his excess mana, and it's likely that she also taught him how to use his powerful magic.
Ah, maybe that nap I took was a good thing. This whole video was just me predicting what he'd say next before he said it(Besides that daycare idea.. No way did my mind ever think of that, but honestly, I kinda wished that happened-)
Caw If I take what you said about the butterfly effect, it could be just manipulating events in a way that will lead to a certain outcome without really having information about the future, but she also has some kind of connection to the tomb of wisdom so there's the connection with the knowledge of future events. 😅but I am reaching here

Tappie always nerfs every power very well, so I can't see Pandora being as OP as it looks at first glance. There's some kind of catch to the mechanic that we're not aware of.
So, from what we have seen...she can't die....so anything we do to her is basically in vain....and also anything other do is in vain(like greed archbishop cutting sloth hand, but then she sends greed home and sloth hand reappears, also the damage to the forest seems restored).....so.....we have to dod something that's can't be considered in vain.....like sloth getting his authority...she didn't rewrite that becs she didn't consider it in vain, her goal is to open the seal, with clearly is not in vain so she can't affect it(?).....so then....how do we defeat her......maybe envi is our only answer, becs by my logic, envying vanity, basically means you're envying the fact that something is in vain, in other words, the person envying, by default is the opposite of vain...right? So by default anything envi does is meaningful and can't be in vain Or maybe melancholy somehow is our answer, I means he also exists outside of the sins we mostly know about
