Figuring Out What Happened to the BMW E31 840's M60 V8 Engine | Cheapest E31 8 series in the US: Pt1

- Today we finally embark on the Cheapest E31 8 series in the US project. That means trying to get to the bottom of why this engine blows by a quart of oil every 10 minutes. Something is definitely not right here. At the end of the day, this M60 had to come out anyway to start our M60B44 project.

Another interesting one Josh, although not a massive amount to show at this stage. Any marks at all in either Alusil or Nikasil are bad news, whether you can feel them or not. Cant' say for definite obviously, but the crosshatching on either Alusil or Nikasil is a very specialised job, not impossible, but quirky, and the fact that it is so obvious on that engine may mean that someone has given it a normal honing which will have wrecked the coating. New compression rings would mean that the compression figures will be OK to start with but the engine will always burn oil. You are doing the right thing with the M62 swap.
Thanks for the insights Bob. Good to know. Certainly has some markings on the liner, and like you said the homing was very pronounced which seems odd. 4.4 will be more fun and eliminate chasing my tail haha
Hell yeah brother.
I have a 1995 M60 E38, love to see this!
Thanks dude!!!
If you're looking for bottom blocks, you should try to get an M62B46 Block from an X5 4.6is. That extra displacement helps!
I heard of that but they are hard to come by! I already got my 4.4!
Exactly the same project im doing right now with my e30 v8.
M62b44 non vanos bottom end m60 top half with standalone management
Dont forget to blank the oil feed hole that used to feed the U guide on the 4.4 bottom end. I drilled mine, tapped a thread and used a bolt with locktight. If you dont, you will drop oil pressure.
Lookign forward to more uodates mate so ive subbed 👍
Im pulling the 4.0 out if the e30 tommorow actually
Cheers
Ant 😎
Thank you for the reminder!!! Definitely making sure I do that!!
Happy New Year Josh to you and your family, wishing you continued success and much happiness dude! 🙏😎
Thank you my brother!!
Happy new year to also, i allways see you video before i sleep.when i buy my bmw e34, 4 years ago and i had to find out something i didn't show, you were the first video that came up and it solved the problem and i still have it to this day🎉🎉 in my opinion you have the best olde bmw content on RUclips keep going
🇩🇰🇩🇰
Thank you so much Jonas. That makes me so happy to hear!!!
Another great learning experience for all. Good new year start.
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
just another 9am watching engine tear down, nothing to see here 🫡
YESSSIR!!!
Very interesting.
Happy New Year!
Happy new year Brick!!
Interesting to see some coverage of the E31. And curious to see what the source of the oil blow-by will be!. Looking forward to a great 2024!
Tore down whole engine with absolutely zero signs of any direct cause, very odd
Nice Video, I enjoyed it Josh. German Engineering is top notch, greetings from Austria
Thank you!!!!
Excited to see the E31 build. Such a gorgeous body style and that pillar-less look with the windows down. If it’s not going to be a keeper, I say leave the manual swap for the next guy.
Especially as I’m working on my neighbors 850i as well. It is a huge mess that has been fighting me along the way. But I have a couple weeks break as it just went off to paint and body work. Would love for you to check it out on my channel.
I told him a few more repairs and I’ll be able to afford my own E31 😂
Exactly what I decided on. Not worth it if I don’t plan on keeping for a while, its not easy or cheap as you know! Haha
Nice video my friend. Cant wait til u do an s54 in the dakar e36 😅
I think the dakar e36 will be sold before I do that hahaha
Is it hard to come by the E39 diesel 6-speeds in the US? It's a popular swap in Sweden for a much stronger gearbox if you can find the adapter. Excited to see an E31, my neighbour used to have an 850i when I was a kid. Our windows would shake when he started it in the mornings :)
Not just hard to come by but impossible to come by, we never got those here:((((
Excellent…
Please document the B44 build! I have a m60 in my e36 and would love more power!
Im working on the video now! 1 hour special of start to finish m60b44 assembly
suppose it's time to figure out what's wrong with my 840Ci too. I bought it a while back and it's making a pretty nasty scraping noise from the timing cover/head area. Can't see anything from a visual inspection, but it sounds like the chain is scraping.....something. nothing in the oil pan as evidence. I have a M62b44 sitting here, might be time to make that hybrid alongside you.
840ci would mean m62? Which is known for timing chain guide failure, perhaps thats the case?
Check you main chain tensioner. Its probably allowing slack in the chain and thats your warning sign!
Did you say m60b44? M62b44 bottom end and m60b40 cylinder head? Sounds like a fun project
Yessssir!
OSV or oil tube o-rings.
Oil separator valve in timing cover appeared decent? Dipstick tube oil rings I never thought of
Hope you can send that block for repairs or buy a new block :)
New block acquired!
Eustace is the man yo!
Eustace but spelled Justas 😉
could those marks be caused by improper ring end gap?
I suppose that is possible!
E46 or 350z or Acura TSX or FG1, Fg2 Civic Si? Which would you choose? I am buying a car soon had an e46 btw about 4 BMWs love them lol
I will always pick the BMW, im a bad person to ask haha
@@m3nameisjosh464 lol not a problem dude
Beamer fan till I die...❤
Same here🙌🏼🙌🏼
another E30 ALPINA? Nice :D
Yes😝
M3 josh the American M539 🇺🇸
The best compliment!
Jeez, lying under cars fighting with exhausts, driveshafts etc. Like me, you really, really, REALLY need a 4 post lift. I have a Z3 breaker to take apart. Picked it up Friday and I can't face it just yet. I'm too old for it, I think. 😂
6 speed? Nah. The E31 is a tank and better as an auto. I don't think a white 840Ci will be worth enough for many years to warrant a $4000 swap.
Did you notice the 2 4 posts to the right😭🤣 I have em, but dont use em! Hahahs
But I agree, and thats why I decided against 6 speed swap, car simply isn’t worth it!
@@m3nameisjosh464going back to moms garage days haha
@@startingtech3900 im still very much living in those days haha
You can find a 6-speed 540 E34 or 540 E39 and take almost all the main 6-speed components from there. It should not be that expensive. Back in 2017 I manually swapped my 540 E34 with brand new clutch kit and flywheel and a trans from an M5 E39 and the entire cost was about 3K.
But if I were you I would put an S85 with a 6-speed gearbox in the E31 and have the perfect BMW!
Finding a 6 speed has been difficult, but the main issues are the driveshaft and the $700 NLA shifter linkage part, just more work and costs than im interested in right now.
@@m3nameisjosh464 you can increase the length of the existing drive shaft and rebalanced it. Also for the linkages you can fabricate something usind stuff from E34. In my 540 I used the linkages of a 525 and I just cut and weld so as to obtain the required length. But I suppose you just don't want to remove and reinstall the steering wheel column! 😂
@@disco_volante1062 definitely dont want to do that hahah, id rather get it running and then maybe gather parts, i dont want another e28 situation where I dump money and time and get no return
Yaaaaaaa Justas!!
Rare channel appearance!!
Oil separator failure most likely
I pulled it out and it looks fine?
💪😎👍
You should m60 swap an e30 for a video and I’ll buy it from u lmaooo I’m in IL too
Not a bad idea😳
If your serious let’s talk about it👀
@@Moocow444 future possibility. Youll see if if it happens!
Hey bro
I’m drinking Tennessee
But I am drinking)
Piston rings mightve been sticking
Possible, but all 8 is a little unlikely no?
@@m3nameisjosh464 very but also not super far fetched considering it sat for a while
This is a good shout.! When I fitted my m60b40 to my e30 it was smoking and it concerned me. I changed thr pcv plate and diaphragm and other bits and pieces which all looked in good shape to be fair but I changed them anyways.
Then one day the car stopped smoking. I think a few heat cycles had freed off the rings which I suspect had stuck in after the engine had sat for years before I fitted it.
