- Please join us as Dr. Froggi VanRiper, from the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program - Oregon State University, discusses the fascinating, affordable technologies for bringing safe sanitation and dignity to low-infrastructure communities and the importance of forging connections between social, ecological, and economic sectors to achieve successful outcomes.
The Caribbean nation of Haiti is surrounded by ecological wonders, from coral reefs essential to global climate maintenance, to important dietary marine resources. Centuries of colonial exploitation, however, have left Haitians without the resources to steward their land and marine ecosystems. Among these crises is sewage management. Less than 1% of Haiti’s sewage is safely managed before discharge to the sea, and nearly 20% of the population lack a toilet altogether. Fortunately, innovators are uncovering novel solutions to this ecological and human health crisis.
