If you ever came to Oklahoma around 10yrs ago & were chased off by a disgruntled native American. That was me fresh out of being deactivated from the service. The split was mutual but most effects aren't as bad now. I think your that pretty girl that offered to help but no one could then. Thank you for getting me to start playing again. Many soldiers came home addicted to uppers & alcohol that was given to us. None of us are the same after combat. Bless you.
Thanks so much for this lesson. Main reason I looked up this song, is because I liked it and Anthony Clay, was using this song as a part of his accoustic stories. It took me about 15 minutes messing around with the chords to get comfortable with them. I play an electric guitar with a Boss JS-10 and had a tone patch by Tony Fuentes, called 1988 Beast from the East. This song is all about playing with feeling. I've been listening to the song from the unplugged version and watching various people showing various ways to play this song on the guitar. I also listened to the studio version with the video. I left my guitar in half step down tuning and saw that you had the same tuning. Once I got into playing the song and then started to put myself and style of playing into it. I noticed that I could use the A string and do a 3,2 pull off and then do the same thing on the low E string. It works very well with the song. I also was able to noticed that Cadd9 could do a lot of various things with that one finger technique. This is when I started doing the A string and E string technique above instead of just purely relying on the Cadd9 chord by itself to do some of the that technique. It worked out very well. I sometimes left out the high E string during the Dm chord sometimes through playing. I also used a double stop A 2nd fret on the D and E strings at time before playing the the Cadd9 and then used the Cadd9 fingering. I find it very important to experiment. Because, what sounds good together with chords and notes is very important. I progressed onto the power chords further down the neck using the 5ths on two strings at the same time on two to four postions and going back to the main chords you showed. Found the positions that sounded good with the chords you showed in this video. Mostly used the EA and AD strings to do this on. I found the 5th fret Major Pentatonic worked very well with the song and started doing a lot in that area playing around with guitar soloing. I found that box shapes worked very well such as 2,3 on the low E string and A string and also moving to the next octave up on the next two sets of stings. The 5,7 also worked well on the low E and A strings doing the same octave box climbing to the next two strings. Sliding into certain notes on the low E and A strings and usinging vibrato on that note really breathes life into the nutshell song. Thats what I was noticing once I got the basics you taught down. I was playing from like 8 PM till like 11 PM, for a 2 hour session. George Lynch, was one of my guitar instructors in 2004 to 2008 and so was Bryon Shepherd, was 2003 to 2008 as well. This is what seems to make one into a better player is by experimenting like that during a session. Have to push oneself out of the comfort zone and be able to land on notes and if they don't sound right, to jump until you find the good ones. I kept doing that until I was hitting the good sounding notes consistently. I ended up playing some extremely fast runs as I was getting going about an hour into practice and Yngwei Malmsteem type playing I found seems to work well with those clasical descending riffs. Im sure going to be playing this song a lot in my practice sessions since I really like it. It gets me into a very creative mood when playing chord progressions that sound great like the ones in this song.
Thanks a lot Angela! You're such a great teacher. Eager student from Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Been playing for 25 years....should be a heck of a lot better player than I am, but hey I have fun! The Beatles 'Hide Your Love Away' is a favorite. Really helped me develop my rhythm "skills". Thanks again.. stay awesome ! Peace.
@burkew1 thanks for the offer, not a lot of free time lately. You check-out Evertt's music barn in historic Suwanee on Saturday, it's bluegrass but you can show up with guitar anytime and pick.
Super super great lesson. Such a nice teaching style. Been looking for an in depth lesson on this song. A complete lesson. Thank you very much. And easy on the eyes. Win. Win!!!!
Bravo this has been the most helpful video ever !! Really love how you teach and go back over everything ! Glad i dropped in and listened. Especially the solo. What about "4 Non Blondes" "What's Up" and some lead parts
Angela - love your lessons - you are a great teacher. How do you like your Martin Guitar? Going back and forth between the Martin SC13e and the D-28. Going for a warm deep sound - Would love your thoughts my friend. Thanks!!
Awesome, but I'm pretty sure that the unplugged version starts with an E major. 😎 Maybe not a lot of people know it cause you cant see the guitar. It gives it a bit of a different cooler start. Try it and see if you are convinced.
So cool that Angela did this one! I tried playing this yesterday after playing along to Interstate Love Song but it's not the same, the standard tuning isn't right, tuning a half step down is totally worth it if you're into learning anything from this awesome record 🤘🤘
what ends up happening to me is you tube is the best free thing on the internet. then i go down some rabbit hole and play a nine inch nails song for no reason. it is weird how that works. i have been playing guitar for year it isn't easy. i am not a ten year player so i try not to sound like the group. i don't know it is fun trying to though.
I'm blown away on your lessons and how you break them down ! Could you please do a lesson on Free Bird ? And the melody of notes as the slide part comes in ? Rock on , Rock on ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 🎶 🎸 🎶

Loving this lesson. A lot easier than I thought it would be. Working not the lead part, but the strumming is on point.

Yes, you beautiful person! Thanks so much for this, your teaching method is so in tune with how I learn, great song. Peace and love from Ireland!
Missed it live but watching now from Texas. My fav would have to be Amie by Pure Prairie League.
I'm just a beginner at 60, but these are top-notch videos! When I get a little cheekier, I'm going to try that "Tennessee Whiskey" video!
