I've run into this with ONE 8mm tape. It does the format shuffle back and forth and no matter what I do, I can't get it to play. Play-FF does seem to show something a bit scrambled so I think it's in Dig8 but it won't work in any of my cameras, etc. Same thing happens, the format shuffle back and forth. Womp womp.

This is a much more active job than I expected. Do you even get a chance to sit down at any point?
Nope
I had an issue with a tape that was filmed in an extreme cold location. At room temperature it refused to playback so I put the camera in my freezer and ran cables out to my computer and it played fine. Something about the temperature shrinking the tape or heads or something.
The pool tape may be the opposite? Direct sunlight or heat?
Oooooo… I have a 8mm recording from a digital 8 camera I brought to alaska. Camera worked in negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit
Playback works fine in florida so I don’t know
I'm surprised by leaving the laptop on top of the VHS player noise from the laptop doesn't effect the playback quality
Does not. Interesting observation. I worry more about heat. But I keep it cold as ice

What kind of camera do you use that can detect the diffrent kinds of 8mm magnetic tape? it would be a great help for my little digitizing to know :)

Do you have anyone around there that does tape path alignments with an oscilloscope? I messed my VCR up years ago by fooling with it, and while I've gotten it to a playable state, I have to do what you are with that camera, fooling with it on almost every tape. Been meaning to get it professionally aligned but no one around me does it.
I think that if you do the adjustments with a crt tv it would be more tuned. I have a oscilloscope but I have no idea how to use it

I didn't know that you could splice videos in elgato? Or how are you splicing videos together?
I do it in Final Cut.
Are you a fan of video cassette tape cleaners? I'm not!
I use them. They don’t always work
I saw using a piece of paper and alcohol to clean the main video head and qtip for the rest.
