He was only 17 years old when he died, imagine what he could have accomplished RIP Ritchie Valens 💜
I wonder sometimes what Ritchie Valens could have done to unite people with his music.
@@JohnnyPappas Imagine Ritchie as a producer working with Selena.....
Sooo much possibility gone in That crash💔
Buddy was the true talent. Ritchie was good but no Buddy Holly
@@greglegakis4177 holly was 5 years older, to say the Kid Ritchie Valens wasn't a True talent shows you don't know music. There is a Reason Buddy the Big Bopper and others had him come on tour, it shows they saw the true talent that you seem to overlook.
When you listened to La Bamba you weren’t listening to his voice.. it was the band Los Lobos who did the movie soundtrack. “Donna” is an awesome ballad from Richie Valens.
Was it Caesar? I'm a major Los Lobos fan, but it would have been nice to have heard Richie's version. Here's a sample. ruclips.net/video/hto-UMuYkwk/видео.html
Lou Diamond Phillips learned to sing and play guitar after he was cast but I doubt he was ready to be featured. Why take a chance when you've got Los Lobos in the studio?

His other hits are "La Bamba" and “Donna”. That song was about Richie’s girlfriend/first love Donna Ludwig. Valens was a pioneer of Chicano rock and Latin rock, and inspired many musicians of Mexican heritage. There is a movie about his life called La Bamba.
They have done la bamba
@@ggjjkhhhj5196 not with Richie's voice. It was Los Lobos.
@@surlechapeau they’re all my hometown heroes❤️
Excellent movie also!
They should do La Bamba with Richie actually singing.
Richie, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly are the 3 performers who died together in a plane crash, the "night the music died" Don McLean sings of in "American Pie."😢
You need to hear him sing La Bamba! Nothing against Los Lobos, who's version you heard, but the original sounds way better! RIP to the Big Three!
I agree
Los Lobos were great, but I understand what you are saying.
Here is a link to Ritchie singing La Bamba. ruclips.net/video/q7RhhBh4tNo/видео.html
What makes the Los Lobos cover special is the homage to the original Mexican folk tune at the end.
i agree 1000%
Ritchie Valens, actually Valenzuela, was of Mexican descent, but the guy who played him in La Bamba was a Philippino.
Lou Diamond Phillips is a Filipino-American actor.
The 1st ever Mexican rock n roller. 🇲🇽 RIP Ritchey. 🎸
The "La Bamba" you listened to was both from the movie AND was sung by the group Los Lobos. It wasn't actually Ritchie singing. And it's Valens with a short "a", just like Valenzuela.
So, you are going to have to find an actual recording of Ritchie singing "La Bamba". Also listen to "Donna".
Ritcie was the youngest of the 3. About a month short of turning 18.
We lost so much potential music with their loss.
I didn’t know he was so young. What amazing courage he must have had to put himself out there as a kid. 😔
He'd be nearly 81 years old today.
What is stunning about Richie Valens was that he was 17 when he died. He had probably just turned 17 when he shot this. He was the first of (sadly very few) hispanic rockers. We cry for the life lost at such a young age...but we mourn for the music we never got to experience because he left us too soon.
Again, though -- I love that you guys did this today. Other little facts you may not have seen when reading about this Winter Dance Party tour: As you noticed on the tour poster, another headliner on that tour was Dion DiMucci (of Dion and the Belmonts, which is another great group you should react to if you haven't already), and Dion later talked about how he won a coin toss to take the plane to the next gig instead of the bus, but then he found out it was going to cost $36, and decided he didn't want to spend that money, so he said gave up his seat to Buddy (there were only 4 seats on the plane). Waylon Jennings also gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, who was dealing with the flu and didn't want to suffer a long bus ride in the cold. On the next gig in Fargo, North Dakota, after the crash, other artists took their place, including a 15-year-old singer named Bobby Vee, who, because of that performance, suddenly had a career in music -- and Bobby Vee later went on to have a half-dozen gold records. So as "the music died", some music was, in a strange way, actually born out of that tragedy.
Waylon didn’t talk about it for so many years. Buddy found out that he wasn’t coming on the plane and joked to him “I hope your damn bus freezes again” and Waylon responded “Well I hope your plane crashes”
The statement haunted him for so many years.
Buddy chartered the plane, not Dion
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 no where in his comment does he say Dion charted the plane
@@BoomBoom77156 Well, he certainly implied it... as Dion DiMucci (of Dion and the Belmonts, which is another great group you should react to if you haven't already), and Dion later talked about how>>> he won a coin toss to take the plane to the next gig instead of the bus, but then he found out it was going to cost $36, and decided he didn't want to spend that money, so he said gave up his seat to Buddy
Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died & had only released one album (although he was working on his 2nd one). One often wonders what kind of music legacy he would've had if he had lived to an old age. I would suggest that you also listen to his hits "Donna" (which was about his first love) and "La Bamba" (the version you listened to was by the band Los Lobos for the movie, not Ritchie) as well as "Bluebirds Over the Mountain", "In a Turkish Town", "My Darling Is Gone", "Oooh My Head", "Framed" & "We Belong Together". Some of these songs are from his "official" album & others were rough takes for his upcoming album, but all showcase his phenomenal talent.
Waylon Jennings' was haunted by his last words to Buddy Holly. When Jennings gave up his seat to a sick Big Bopper and was going to take the tour bus, Holly said to Waylon. "I hope your ol' bus freezes up!" And Waylon responded by saying, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes!" Waylon could barely live with himself and didn't play for a while. Poor soul.
I visit his grave every chance I get, located San Fernando Mission Cemetery (Mission Hills, CA--very near his home in Pacoima). "Two years prior to his death when he was a 15-year-old student at Pacoima Junior High School there was a plane crash. At the time of the disaster he was not at school that day because he was attending the funeral of his grandfather."
'"Despite not being at school when the mid-air collision happened, Ritchie Valens developed an intense fear of flying because of this plane crash. By 1957, Ritchie would bring his guitar out on the playground while his fellow students would gather around him and listen. Valens was convinced that if he had been there that day, he would have been one of the victims of the 1957 mid-air collision.
• Donna Fox, the subject of Ritchie’s hit song “Donna,” recalled that Ritchie “would have nightmares about that [flying]. He just had a horrible fear of small planes, and planes in general. He indicated that he would never fly. He just would never fly.”'
The video was a clip from a 1950s film called Go Johnny Go. The film starred one of Rock and Roll's pioneers, Alan Freed, who happened to be one of the guys sitting at that table. In fact, Alan was credited as being the DJ that officially called the popular music "rock 'n roll".
R&R was black slang for "sex" at the time
You HAVE to watch the movie "La Bamba" about Richie Valens!!! This song is also in it. It's so good.
You should do Ritchie Valens singing "La Bamba". When you did it before, it was not Ritchie Valens or his voice! It was Los Lobos. ...I think, that you'll change your mind, because "La Bamba" was his best.
Right! And now that you mention it, Los Lobos would be great for their own reaction video
Between "La Bamba" and "Donna."
Glad you have done all 3 of the talents that we lost. Ritchie was the youngest at only 17. Who knows what he could have accomplished in his life. He left us with some great music. "La Bamba", "Donna", "Come On, Let's Go", "Framed", "Ooh! My Head", "In A Turkish Town", "We Belong Together", "Little Girl" etc. The movie La Bamba is an autobiography of his short life.
"Sleepwalk" is probably the best thing he ever wrote. His technique was just years ahead of its time.
That flyer you saw at the end of the video is actually advertising the concert they all played at on that fateful night. The plane crash happened shortly after that show. Big Bopper (JP Richardson) was 28, Buddy Holly, 22, & Ritchie, only 17, & he'd already had several hits. Big Bopper had the one hit, but Buddy was a huge influence & innovator in the newly-emerging rock-n-roll era. Almost every 60s group was in some way influenced by the sounds & many, many songs Buddy created.
He was only 17 yrs. old when he died in a plane crash.. love Ritchie's music was and is awesome. La Bamba was his most awesome song. Great reaction. love to you both from Memphis Tn.
You should check out his song "Oh Donna", his only hit to reach the top ten on the charts (#2 on both the Billboard and Cashbox charts). Yes it was shocking to lose these artists all in the same day. 63 years ago I walked into my house after hanging out with my friends and could see my mother was visibly upset when she said to me "I just heard on the radio that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper all died in an airplane crash a few hours ago.". I was shocked and devastated. All three had been getting heavy airplay on the radio, and of course Buddy Holly had been releasing hits for two years.
OK how about Peter Fram tons do you feel like I do it will blow you away
1957 Pacoima mid-air collision. Look this up! It happened at the junior high school i believe. Ritchie had been attending but was at a funeral that day. 2 or 3 students were killed and from then on he had nightmares. Causing him to develop a fear of flying. And he was killed in a plane crash.
Once you know his performing name is actually short for Valenzuela. it'll be easier for you to remember how to pronounce Valens = rhymes with "talons" (first part pronounced like the girls' name 'Val').
Like Val Kilmer?

The day the music died... RIP LEGENDS!
Buddy's mom found out by listening to the radio, wife seen it on TV and she had a miscarriage. This is when the law started requiring notifications to family members before mentioning names...
I watched the movie about Richie when i was young, i had the biggest crush on the actor back then. I think it's also how i developed my fear of flying. RIP Richie they were all so young😢🙏
Correction, Ritchie Valens songs were all recorded by Los Lobos for the film "La Bamba" Ritchie was played by Lou Diamond Phillips
Thank you. I couldn't think of the Actors name
The guys in the back - one is Alan freed from Cleveland who famously named it - rock and roll.
Speaking of that - now until April you can view for the next group to be added to the r&r hall of fame. You can vote once a day for the next 2 months.
If he had lived he could actually still be rocking. His voice and performance was so mature, but youthful. 17 years old...but through tragedy he and the others have become eternal.
Stray thought, the TV show Happy Days has a large number of the songs from the 50s.
He'd be nearly 81 years old today.
Bob Dylan was in the audience at the Duluth show on Jan 31,1959 at the Duluth Armory.
His real name is Richard Valenzuela, so the a is short. Since you were wondering the proper pronunciation. I love that you guys are widening your musical tastes. His other huge hit was called "Donna". It was written about the girl he was going to marry.

You must watch the movie La Bamba where the great Lou Diamond Phillips portrays the amazing Ritchie Valens. You will cry when you see his story. You will also understand why he did the song La Bamba.

I'll never forget the day the music died when we heard over the radio in the car about the plane crash my mother cried so hard and when we got home that was the quietest day it was like a real rainy day when all the kids would stay home and play and be quiet that's the only way I could describe what it was like that quiet day after we found out what had happened
YES! You actually reacted to this song! "Come On Let's Go" has been my favorite Valens' song all along, and this vid clip shows his style nicely. Thanks for this, you two.
I grew up in Pacoima, his home town! Our baby sitter used to bring this 45 over to play on our Hi-Fi. Thanks so much!
EDIT: song release date 1987. Thanks, @lonnie fuller
The song in the movie was done by Los Lobos in 1987. So that's a high quality modern recording, and modern recordings contain frequencies that older recordings simply lack, due to the equipment of the time. I think that may be part of what you're picking up on when you say his voice is clearer and higher here. The human voice (especially tenors like him) is right in the frequency range that stands out in these old recordings.
But I also think you're right about the timbre of Ritchie Valens' voice being higher than that of Cesar Rosas, lead singer for Los Lobos. Good catch!
Hey, you guys should do Los Lobos. Fantastic band.
1987
@lonnie fuller, yes 1987, thanks!
Richie Valens was an Anglicized stage name from Richard Valenzuela, his adopted last name is pronounced like the first two syllables of Valentine
Somebody may have already mentioned this, but country legend Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on that plane to the Big Bopper. Jennings was the bass player for Holly's band on that last gig. The Bopper had the flu and didn't want to take the long bus ride.
Some still claim that was proof god is a Country Music fan. RIP to all on the plane.
I always loved this tune
Very respectable of you to relive this moment in history. Since you're going this far back I'm wondering if you did Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets.
I think they did. I remember they were introduced as Bill Haley & His Comments
@@Xcris_crosX okay, thanks for the update. I found it.
This is my favorite Ritchie Valens song. Thank you for remembering these 3 artists with these happy vibes songs. The day is sad enough already.
We Belong Together or Donna are both good ballads. His last name was Valenzuela but his manager shortened it to Valens at the beginning of his short career
a quote from Richie Valens-" stars do`nt fall out of the sky,do they? he always had a fear of flying[had nightmares as a child] he won a coin toss- to see who got to fly-
Another great film you should watch... "La Bamba" with Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens...
The song on the video is from the movie Go Johnny Go and the song he is singing is Ooh My Head. The three guys sitting at the table is on the left is Chuck Berry and the middle is Alan Freed. The movie ironically was released in 1959.
When you played La Bamba before, you played a clip from a movie about Ritchie, but it wasn't him singing the song, it was a modern day remake done for the movie. So this is the first time you've actually played one of his recordings.
On this song, Ritchie really swings it!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite song of his by far!!!
❤️ Love Richie! As a Donna I grew up thinking he was singing right to me 😉

Richie Valens "Donna". ❤️
Donna and We belong Together are great ones from Ritchie Valens too! Worth giving a listen.
RIP to the late great Ritchie Valens. Tomorrow Feb 4 is also the 39 year anniversary of Karen Carpenter's passing, so you might want to react to her final recording "Now". Love you guys. Thanks
Ritchie died at the the age of 17 in 1959. Today he would be almost 81 if he hadn't won the coin toss for a seat on that ill-fated plane. Just a couple years before he died, a Douglas DC-7B plane crashed in the schoolyard of his high school as a result of a midair collision with a two-seat F-89 fighter jet, killing three of his classmates and injuring 73. All aboard the DC-7B were killed along with the pilot of the F-89. The radar operator in the rear seat of the F-89 was able to eject and survive. Ritchie wasn't in attendance at school that day because he was at his grandfather's funeral. This incident was portrayed in the biopic La Bamba to illustrate why Ritchie was afraid to fly.
It is a shame we were never able to see how his voice would have matured. I feel he would had a long shining career.
Richie Valens would have been a tremendous star had he lived. He was only 17 when he died in the plane crash.
The La Bamba from the movie was not Ritchie’s voice. That was dubbed over by the group Los Lobos
Also, Waylon Jennings could have been on that plane that night. He was touring with Buddy Holly in 1959 and gave up his seat. The Big Bopper took his seat.
A bit of history regarding "The Day the Music Died". Apart from the tragedy of losing these three performers, a few other things happened in 1959 that would kind of sink the popularity of Rock n Roll. Elvis Presley was drafted into the army and spent a few years out of the limelight and not making music. Little Richard gave up music for a bit (he got tired of being cheated by the record companies) and went into the ministry. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin, and his career took a sudden dive when the general public realized their relationship. A lot of big names were suddenly NOT making the music they had been, and Rock n Roll went into this state of Limbo until the Beatles arrived in America in 1964.
And the first big domino in all of that was the crash of this little plane in a frozen Iowa field.
Well said. It led to four years of mostly bland boy singer garbage until The Beatles came along and revitalized music making music largely inspired by these very people.
I heard or read somewhere that Don Mclean that sings the song American Pie put that line that said the day the music died that line was based off of Ritchie and the others that died in the plane crash
Yep. You still had some big names, like the Everly Brothers, still cranking out the same music they had been, but it wasn't enough of them left. The record companies went into a panicked schizophrenia. Some were hell bent to take music back to the swing heyday 10 years prior. Some went for a swing/rock hybrid. Others looked for people who sounded like Elvis or Buddy Holly. Today we would refer to the era as "market researched". For every one of the old school, innovative rockers still making music, you had 10 new people who were formulaic, sanitized imitators putting out canned, bland music. There were a few gems, but a lot of rocks.
Until....
@@bretthibbs6083 yeah, it was a headline in the newspaper. He was a kid, with a paper route, and remembered that headline, which became the basis of the song.
I was born the year the music died. Thank God I came into my own during the 70's and 80's, two decades of really great music.
That was some great memories thanks for that. Y'all should check out the movie La Bamba with Lou Diamond Phillips aa Ritchie. Great movie , my man was only 17 when he passed. Keep rockin!!!
The band and singer for the video La Bamba was Los Lobos. Their singer David Hidalgo did all of Richie’s singing vocals in the movie.
Los Lobos is an amazingly talented band from East LA and should be added to a future episode. I say do one of their earliest songs Will the wolf survive.
Another note, Buddy Holly’s guitar player lost out on taking that flight to Richie. That guitar player is the legendary Waylon Jennings. He’s part of outlaw country like Willie Nelson.
If you want to hear some ultimate 50s guitar, you have to check out Link Wray “Rumble”. An american musician of Shawnee Tribal decent. He influences a huge number of later rock guitarists including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. The song has such a menacing tone that it was banned by some radio stations. Interesting since it’s an instrumental.
Ritchie was a baby and yet he was an elder to rock and roll. His whole catalog is a great listen! In the slight chance this is read Eddie Cochran sang a beautiful tribute to these rockers called "Three stars" the raw grief in his voice is enough to make your eyes well up. Just found you today and found myself down thus rabbit hole. Thank you
Valens like In Valentines Day.
PERFECT!! I was just trying to think of a way to tell them how to pronounce it!!
richie made it easier to say instead of his real name VALENZUELA by ''whitening'' it down to valens.
Richie Valens was 17, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson was 28, and Buddy Holly was 22 when they died.
Ritchie Valens had only been in the music business for 7 months when he died at the age of 17, he dropped out of high school to pursue his music career. We Belong Together is another good song to listen to if you want to hear more from him.
The voice and music on the video you did a while back was actually the group Los Lobos.
You almost got it. It is pronounced "VAL-ens" (like in "value"). It's basically pronounced like Valenzuela (if you take the final four letters off). "Donna" should be your next Ritchie song.
I have always heard it pronounce vay-lens. Not saying you are wrong, just saying the way Amber and Jordan is pronouncing it is the way I have always heard it.
💯
the spanish ''a'' is ALWAYS pronounced as 'ah''. @@005uz345
In addition to Tom Beyerlein's comment with the trivia about Waylon Jennings and why they were flying instead of taking the bus, another thing to keep in mind is the harsh winter weather conditions that the plane was flying in.
Gotta do "We Belong Together", and Donna", by Ritchie Valens...
Thank you guys for remembering these great people
The voice singing in the movie was David Hidalgo of Los Lobos band, not Ritchie. The actor was Lou Diamond Phillips, lip syncing.
You _cannot_ think Ritchie Valens and overlook "La Bamba" (my favourite RV song), "Donna" and "We Belong Together"... pure timeless classics.
When you start your movie reaction channel, you should definitely watch "La Bamba." Such a great movie.
It was actually the band Los Lobos doing the vocals on the La Bamba video
Maybe you guys should do an early song by Waylon Jennings -- the guy who gave up his seat on the plane to JP Richardson (The Big Bopper), and therefore was *that* close to being part of this unfortunate history.
No it's not Vālens, it's the way Vǎlenz-uela would be pronounced. And no that wasn't his voice in La Bamba, that was David Hidalgo from a band called Los Lobos who provided the music for the movie
The movie was NOT Richie Valens, but Los Lobos. He didn't actually speak Spanish.
17, one take on a four track.
Unreal talent.
Buddy, Bopper, Valens… truly the day the music died.
Hey Jay and Amber... love you both and keep doing what you're doing. Great work!
So, since you two are going old school, I thought I'd drop one on you.
The song is called Sh-Boom. It's considered the FIRST rock and roll song.
Now, here's the weird part... it was originally done by an all black vocal group called The Chords... and it was fantastic!
But a month after it was released, it was redone by a group called the Crew Cuts... who would take songs from black groups and "make it more palatable" to a white audience.
I think the Crew Cuts' version is weak... and The Chords version superior.
Anyways... might be good for a show or two comparing them.
Funny you mention running the hand through the side of the hair… Tonight watching the Olympic ice skating (couples dance) the Japanese couple skated to an Elvis song. They were dressed in 50’s style with hair to match. The guy kept running his hand over the side of his hair. 😄
Also if you remember the tv show Happy Days, the Fonz would comb his hair like that too.
Or check out the song by Edd “Kookie” Byrnes and Connie Stevens, “Kookie Lend Me Your Comb”.
What a trip down memory lane this has been.
Not my ritchie!!!!!
I feel bad for liking that but oh lord it’s just a big moment in the movie and breaks my heart every time.
RITCHIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ending of the movie "La Bamba" made it feel just as tragic in 1987 when the movie came out as it was on Feb 3, 1957. If Rob Squad ever start reacting to movies it should be on the list.
@@davidrobinson3716 Definitely! I was a kid when I watched that movie and maybe heard the names Big Bobber, Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens but had no clue who they were and maybe they did music. There are a few films that i`d love to see them react to and I feel would give them a deeper insight and some more knowledge into the artists they react to...
"La Bamba" would be one, "What`s Love Got To Do With It" with Angela Bassett would be another...there`s actually quite a few autobiographical movies out there that are well worth the watch, I found a made for TV movie a while ago about Meatloaf that was also a really good watch, released in 2000...
The first sylable of his last name rhymes with pal. His birth name was Richard Valenzuela. He used the stage name at the urging of his agent who felt his name would be an issue with listeners at a time when racism was much more common.
Love this song .. miss Ritchie ..
What a nice tribute to these great artists!!! Two of these performances I have never seen before.
LaBamba is my favorite movie growing up. Lou Diamond Phillips was so convincable as Ritchie Valens and looks wise it's scary. Great movie!!!!
Richie Valenzuela made his mark in rock and roll in such a short time. As a Mexican American, he broke barriers with his music. Most white teenagers didn't care he was Latino. You have to hear him singing La Bamba which has a lot of energy and pizzazz. Teens didn't care if it was in Spanish nor that they didn't understand the words. It rocked them to their core and still does all these years later. RIP Richie. You are will always be remembered
LOVE THIS!!!! Ritchie was the first Hispanic rock star!!!! 🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽❤️
Speaking of Ritchie Valens whose birth name is Richard Valenzuela almost did not have to go on that infamous flight in 1959, 63 years ago today. But tour bus had engine troubles. That's when Buddy Holly chartered plane to continue next stop on their tour. Ritchie gotten very ill from I believed he had the flu. Ritchie won coin toss to see who gets a seat on the plane. Other death, Big Bopper also gotten sick too with the flu. He gotten the seat from Holly's guitarist and then radio DJ who became Country Legend in music, Waylon Jennings. I just wondered if both Holly and Valens survived the crash, new music from them. Big Bopper probably do new music too plus hosting shows too because he had voice for hosting too.
It's so rare to find a Ritchie Valens video, great stuff. This is hard for people to believe; Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly had a what 2 year (if even that) career and they had a lot of hits.....sort of like Hank Williams Sr's short career.
Lou Diamond Philips played in La Bamba.
Amber , when your man walks by and swipes his hair like Ritchie , tell him " Don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yo' self. " ( Georgia Satellites )
I have visited the crash site and also the Surf ballroom where they played their last concert. It was a humbling experience
The anniversary of the day the music died. Janis also mentioned in the song as the girl that sang the Blues, died on 10/4/70
Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died in the plane crash... he had only recorded a handful of songs in the studio and released a few singles before his untimely passing. There is very little film footage of Ritchie Valens - this clip was from a movie he made an appearance in... he never got the chance to be on TV like Buddy Holly. His ballad 'Donna' was a huge hit back in the day...
