Donna, is a real person and she's still alive. She has fond memories of Ritchie Valens and this song. She was his high school sweetheart, she was only 16 years old when he passed away.
Actually she's been married three times and has 2 daughters.
@@racetime1960 she remarried not long afterwards, when she was 19 years old. Supposedly, she married a singer who could play guitar and looked almost like Ritchie Valens. They divorced a year later, and as I recall, she said that she was mentally trying to replace Ritchie with the other guy.

@@magneto7930 talk about a rebound. Ouch.
My first name is Donna and I remember this song
He was 17 years old when he died, and 16 when he wrote this, and it went to number 2 on the charts, that is talent
That's LEGEND
R.I.P. Richie. He was in the plane crash that killed him, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly…….the day the music died. Thank you for this.💔
It's RITCHIE, IT'S IN THE GODDAMN TITLE.
This kid was already a legend at 17, what an impact he left in such a short period of time, rest in peace Ritchie 🙏
Donna was his high school sweetheart and her parents disapproved of their relationship because he was Hispanic. He was only 17 when he died.
"Donna" is a song written by Ritchie Valens,[1] featuring the '50s progression.[2] The song was released in 1958 on Del-Fi Records.[3] Written as a tribute to his high school sweetheart Donna Ludwig, it was Valens' highest-charting single, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the following year. ("Stagger Lee" by Lloyd Price was at number one.)[4] wiki
San Fernando High School...
That and Donna's Dad Hated Rock And Roll.
@@larissahorne9991 Donna's father made his daughter sing 2 songs to capitalize off of Ritchie's death and get money from it, because of that Donna stopped talking to him and never wanted to see him again
Racist was big back during the 1950’s to the early 2000’s white parents disapproved there daughter dating Latino or blacks, now it’s whatever without the approval of a white parents telling them no you gotta date a white guy. Ritch was alive he would of made some good looking mix Latino babies with his sweetheart
My dad has all of his music to this day. They were the same age when Richie Valens died and the first Hispanic rock star. He could’ve accomplished so much
Hard to believe Richie was just 17yrs old when we lost him. His future was soo bright.
My parents used to sing this to me when I was little. So it's always been one of my favorites. But if you listen to his songs, he was an amazing singer, but also an amazing person.
My dad sang it to me too.
As he was so very young and had only just began his musical career when he died, he only had a handful of hits. You've now done his three biggest ones, but if you want to keep going down this road, you can do "Framed", "Little Girl", "We Belong Together", or "That's My Little Suzie".
We Belong Together is a great song, but when viewed through current society's lens it has kind of a creepy possessive stalker vibe. The same is true of several other love songs of that era.
@@patcon314 I hate how society takes the worse ideas out of older pieces of music and other things. I get why they do but they go way too overboard when criticizing and not taking the time it was made into account.
I was named after this song.....
My dad loved this song....
RIP Richie
Here is some trivia: La Bama was on the flip side of Donna back in the 45 RPM days. It was considered a huge 2 sided hit. He was the hero of the Hispanic community, who loved him to death, along with all rock fans. Good review. Thank you.
I have the 45
17 years old. 💔 Poor guy. What a talent. I can only imagine the songs he would have given us. ❤
Definitely a natural great singer. One of the most beautiful songs ever
Richie would have been very successful. May God rest yr soul!!
As my name is Donna I have always loved this song. He does a wonderful job with this one.
My mom named me after this song.1959
I wonder how many of us were named after this song❤️❤️❤️
I wasn't . My mother just liked the name.
My husband and I both cry upon hearing this song, his mother’s name is Donna, my grandmother’s name was Donna. They both have passed. So we love this song.
One of the best slow dancing song💙💙💙🎶🎶🎶
A 50's classic. Very pure sound. Now it's time for the "Seekers", Amber will love them!
Great suggestion... The Seekers had so many great songs!
There seemed to be such an innocence in these types of songs from the 50's and 60's. Music sure has changed, love songs are almost unrecognizable as such for so long now.
My first girlfriend 47 years ago - I gave her this record before leaving for the Army - wish I could find her today to see how her life worked out - “ I had a girl, Donna was her name “ 💕
Wow! We’re you in ww2?
If pristine, it would be worth a fortune. LOL!
My mom is from a small town in western Pennsylvania. She was still in high school when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died. She remembers riding in a car with her friends when the news about the crash was broadcast on the local radio station. They played this song in tribute.
Richie Valens produced some of the most prolific songs in rock-n-roll during his brief 8-month career b4 a plane crash on 2-3-59 took his life (Age 17) and that of Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper on a day which is now infamously referred to as "The Day the Music Died". Can you even begin to imagine the music he had yet to create? So many of these icons died too early, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix, Duane Allman, Amy Winehouse and many others. RIP. As usual, great reaction.
RIP Mr Valens. You were 17 years old when you left this earth. Can you imagine what you would hae achieved, had you lived on ohh. Its just so very sad...... But this I can tell you, you will not be forgotten. But you will always be missed and loved. 🎙🎵🔥⚡🌈🎼🎸
Increíble reaction guys. Taken way to soon. You have to check out his song We Belong Together!
I am so glad you got back to Ritchie Valens, a talent was loss to soon...Donna is such a great song!!!
Another terrible loss. I remember dancing to this song when I was a young girl. ☮️
Check out Dion’s cover/tribute he recorded in 1963. Ritchie would’ve been proud. Dion was on The Winter Dance Party tour with Ritchie, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Those 3 lost their lives in that tragic plane crash
In in the realm of classics, this is one of the ultimates.
Now you should listen to Ritchie Valens’ version of “La Bamba”
Thank you for playing this beautiful song. So young when he was killed in the plane crash. We lost alot of talent that day. We played this song alot at our school dances. I still have this vinyl record. RIP Richie!
I have ONE cd that has ALL the music that Richie recorded. That's how young he was when he died. Yet he already had three big singles. Remarkable!
This was for his first and only love Donna ❤️
My name is Donna & I was 3 when this song came out. My parents bought the 45, & I still have it!! Of course, I've always loved the song, & have been a Ritchie Valens fan all my life!!
Such a sweet song that teenage boy would write for his teenage girl
My favorite Ritchie Valens song- We belong together. Best love song from him.
Ritchie was just a 17 year old kid with only months left to live - but he left a legacy of songs that will echo through generations.
Rockin with some great guitar from Ritchie Valens.. you gotta hear "Ooh My Head." If you want more sweet ballads by Ritchie go for "We Belong Together"
I am old and I can tell you, he was the "Angelina Jordan" of his day...we heard this was a 17-yr-old and it was like, "whoa!!!" (he died at 17 in the plane crash with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper)
Williambill- you don't look old
I live about a mile from the house that Ritchie bought his mother. Ritchie is a big time hero here in Pactown. Pacoima Jr. High was renamed Ritchie Valens Middle School and when the Rec Center was being built people were tagging the building until they found out it would be dedicated to Ritchie, after that the tagging stopped. You don't disrespect Ritchie! Certainly not in Pacoima!
Beautiful song that has stood the test of time.
His name was Richard Steven Valenzuela, a Southern California native who didn't speak Spanish.
He would have turned 81 on Friday.
Dang...
Ritchie you were a influence for us Latinos. 8 months was not enough time for us
I remember when this song came out. I was about 6 and my aunt who's name was Donna was about 14. She thought this song was about and cried so hard when he was killed in that terrible plane crash that killed so many big acts of the day like the Big Bopper.
Remember this when I was a toddler and hreard it throughout my life. Still touches my heart and the great loss of those greats.
That is a 16 year old Ritchie Valens singing a song he had written. It's tragic he was gone at 17... immortally young.
Both LaBamba and The Buddy Holly Story should be on your movie reaction list.
"Donna" was the biggest hit record Ritchie Valens charted, peaking @ #2 for 2 weeks (1st charted late 1958 - peaked early 1959). The B-side of that record was the record he's most identified with -- "La Bamba" (which was charted separately a month after "Donna" first charted) and peaked @ #22. "Donna/La Bamba" was a gold record/ "La Bamba by itself is in the Grammy Hall of Fame & The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Pride of L.A .. Chicano born in Pacoima.. he's the pride of the Chicano community, gone to soon.
He did have a girl named Donna and I got to see her a few years she was in an interview on ABC network
I grew up in his hometown. Our baby sitter turned us on to him. She had her 45s and a portable turntable! This was one of her favorites! Thx!
A special song for me. My first puppy love 50 years ago in 1971 or 72 (when I was 7 or 8 years old) was a girl named Donna. I remember her last name to this very day! Only knew her for maybe a year and our family moved. Somehow heard/discovered this song shortly after and I think about her every time I hear it.
One of my favorite Richie Valens songs. 😊
I very highly recommend you guys check out the movie "La Bamba" based on the life of Richie Valens.
You should watch and react to 'La Bamba' , a movie from 1987 about Ritchie's too short life, played by Lou Diamond Philips. You can also see Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats playing Eddie Cochran and the other actors playing respectively Jackie Wilson and Buddy Holly! This song Donna is kinda haunting, especially the Oh Donna part. It must have been haunting his mother too , losing her young talented son like that. In the movie she shouts: Nooo, not my Ritchie! It's heartbreaking. His older brother does the same, shouting his name all out: RITCHIE!!
His highschool sweetheart, Donna Ludwig, is still alive and well, married, and living in California.
YES!! Always loved this song!! My mom exposed me to 50's and 60's rock and roll at an early age. She grew up during this time, and she would have me dancing with her to this kinda stuff. On the other hand my dad got me into classic country and bluegrass! Quite a combination, all the styles had a big impact on my guitar playing. Great job guys!!! You guy need to check out Jerry Butlers- For your precious love, one of the greatest love songs ever!!!
Can’t you just imagine slow dancing to this song back in the day?
Last week, the Post Office in Pacoima CA was renamed the Richie Valens Post Office.
You need to watch the movie La Bamba. It's about Ritchie Valens. His family was involved in the movie making. His older brother Bob Morales recently passed away, but made it his life's work to make sure Ritchie's legacy lived on.
The first single I bought with my own money. Also the name of my unrequited love. Love the guitar and backing and Richie's voice is like it's drifting on the breeze. What could Richie have achieved if he had lived on?
There is a song called Amber by 311, you both will love this song!
Donna was Richie’s girlfriend when he passed away. LDP did a great job playing Richie! The day he died we lost THREE huge artists Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Richie. In my opinion the Day the music died.
This is crooning.
Soft, sweet vocal singing about lost love.
He died at 17 only few months after signing the record deal definitely one of the best
I'm still waiting for you two to stand up and slow dance.
You right when you said the actor, Lou Diamond Philips, lipsynched La Bamba. However, it was not Ritchie Valens singing. The singers were the group, Los Lobos. You should redo La Bamba. This song, Donna, was my olde sister's favorite song. Of course, her name was Donna. I was 9 years old when this was released in 1957. My sister was 11.
OMG, this is first time I hear Richie Valens version. I know the song from early seventies, when I was 13, by a group called the Buffoons. I just found out they were a Dutch band with close harmony singing and not well known abroad (at the time I assumed they were British or American). They were at the time cancelled as support act for the Beach Boys because their harmonies were too good. But good to hear the original version by Richie Valens, great song.
@Vern Sherris Very mellow that band focused on the harmonies, but as mentioned, it was the first version I heard in the top 40 in this country ruclips.net/video/Q8Kr0RnBcXA/видео.html Terrible clothes they wear but I guess that is 1973
Heavenly! I'm back to my youth again! ❤ Thank you lovely people for making this old lady feel young again!!! 🤗
Jay and Amber,
Lou Diamond Phillips played Ritchie in Alabama. The old woman he sat next to on the couch was Ritchie's mother. She saw the movies premiere when it came out and passed away the following day.
Its like he's sitting in a diner holding her hands across the table and telling her how much he loves her, beautiful.
You had to see the dance floor when this came on. Everyone grabbed a gal or guy to dance to this and you could barely move...lol. Great memory for me. Thanks for reacting. Love you guys.
Kathie says… When I listen to this song, I can feel the love that he had for this girl…Donna.
I bought this record when I was 14 I still have the record to this day, I'm 76 now. I bought the record from a record club in California that only sold 45s you need a little plastic adapter to make it fit on the spindle. Still loving this song.
With your love for music... That is a movie you two need to react to... La Bamba (1987) It's AMAZING.. and sad of course! It's the Biographical story of the rise from nowhere of early rock and roll singer Ritchie Valens who died at age 17 in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. SOOOO GOOD!! PLZ REACT on your movie channel. Great music in it!!!!!!
Agreed!!
Oh you needed the way back machine for this one, Richie Valens and Bubby Holly in one fell shop, thanks guys✌️😎🎙(bluest blue)👍southside OG
Such maturity in his voice at a young age.
Love, love, love this song 🥰🥰🥰🥰
My sister and I would put this on the record player after he died and just ball our eyes out! We knew that this was about his highschool sweetheart and it just broke our hearts! Wonderful song!
So many memories... they played this at every school dance :)
Imagine how many more hits he could’ve made?! Pure talent lost that fateful day!!!
You guys gotta hear his cover song of Maleguena, he really makes that instrumental his own by putting his own personal flavor or twist on the song. Jay you gotta listen to Maleguena if you like unique sounding guitar playing. You would really enjoy it my brother!
He wrote this song for his fiance Donna Lugwig so sad I don't know if they got married before he died or if they were waiting till she graduated high school. So sad. We lost him when he was just starting out . So young.
No not married, Buddy Holly was, his wife lost their baby after Buddy died. Sadly.
My mom was just a little girl in Alden, Iowa when Ritchie died outside of Clear Lake, Iowa
At first this was great, my name being Donna😉. Then as I got older and heard people sing this song to me over and over, I got to the point. Really! You have nothing better😂😂😂
When you did "La Bamba", that wasn't Richie Valens singing, it was a group called "Los Lobos" which was popular, when the movie was made. It wasn't Richie Valens at all! Do Richie Valens version of "La Bamba"! ...You won't get Richie Valens at all, unless you listen to his version of "La Bamba". His career was cut too short to know him otherwise.
The song Donna is heart felt, soft, easy, and melo.
Just takes me back... Thanks. A kinder gentler age of music...
Amo Ritchie Valens eternamente em meu coração ❤️✨✨
"Come On, Let's Go" is another of his songs that has been covered by a lot of artists.
Here is a love song about Amber - Amber by Andrea Marie
Your reaction to "La Bamba" wasn't a reaction to Ritchie Valens, it was a reaction to the movie version of the song performed by Los Lobos. So this should have been a bell-ringing song since it's your first time hearing Ritchie Valens.
We Belong Together is another great Ritchie Valend song 🎵
We belong together by Richie Valens
He was just 17 years old when he died in that plane crash in 1959. The DAY The Music Died
Beautiful song thank you I remember it well🥀
Oh Donna Oh Donna. Classic.
I also had a song that was written for me that became very popular. It was sold to the performers manager and he was credited as the writer. My guy explained to me how the song came to be. I even had a copy of the check and the amount that was paid, along with some of the performers albums autographed to him ( my guy at the time/ long story.) It's nice to know your cared for. I am a channel follower to the end. Your great people. 🎶👋🎶😃
Yea this is the song I was named after in 1959.
He lived with his mom/family in Pacoima, CA. Late 50’s in the Valley of LA. SFV Guy. I lived about 10 minutes away
Good song good reaction
Richie said the stars belong to the sky. So true!
This was played in the Movie La Bamba, With Lou Diamond Phillips playing the Lead,a clip of which you saw, when watching the La Bamba video. The Song was played shortly after her son told his mother of his death. Absolutely Heart wrenching to watch. RIP RICHIE.
Love this. Thanks for sharing !
