    Hi, Jess. I restore wetlands for a living, TN Valley, so I know a lot of native plants great for edge of your pond: Pickerel Rush, Royal Fern, Buttonbush, Water Plantain, yellow Lotus, floating Primrose, Hazel Alder, Virginia Sweetspire, Bald Cypress, Tupelo Gum (what Great Blue Heron nest in) There are too many to list but please check with local county UADA for invasive species to avoid. Good luck, happy fishing!

    Growing up we had 3 ponds and we loved. We could swim in 2. There was a creek behind the big pond for trout. We had bass and catfish in our ponds. We had a little over an acre of garden for a family of 8. Lots of potatoes, winter squash, green beans, onions and etc. Salad items galore. Apple tree. We grew so much, cow, and rabbits. It was so much fun. I have 40x80 lot with a 540 Sq ft cabin in the middle. I'm doing my best to grow tomatoes, Green beans, salad items, peppers, squash of all types and berries.

    Your outlook on life is inspirational! I look up to you so much. Just the simple things, like explaining to your son that his fishing spot is just not lucky yet but it will be once he catches one. That outlook and philosophy is amazing. Thank you for your positivity. I strive to be more like you. 💕 Love and blessings to you, your family & farm.

    Calf sharing saves sooooo much stress. Saturday evening I got hurt, Sunday morning milking. I tried sooooo hard. Having to keep your leg straight and non weight baring and needing to milk a cow......it just wasn't happening. So we let her stay with her baby. And now that's one thing I don't need to worry about. I thank God I get to learn from y'all, Justin, and so many other homesteaders. Yall are such a blessing.

    My great uncle was a 5th generation farmer. None of them could grow strawberries in cultivated land. So one year he pulled all n threw on back side of pond n walked away. In a few months he was fishing n noticed green. The strawberries were growing great n really big berries. I plant in worst piece of dirt in my backyard n they do great.

    When I saw the goats by your side by side I was listening to see if it was turned off. My son got out of his to open the gate and three goats jumped in and one stepped on the gas pedal. Off they went for several yards of a wild ride. Finally it turned over. All the goats were fine. The side by side not so much. Be safe!

    You could try growing watercress on the edges of the pond. They help to keep the water clean and are a food source. Could you try using the guts and bones of the cleaned fish in your compost piles? Or maybe make fish fertilizer with them? Stinky but effective.

      @gelwood99 2 года назад

      We made the mistake with cattails in our pond and it took forever to rip them all out. They took it over and you couldn't get close enough to fish. Also agree with the no lily pads, they took over to the upper portion of the tiny pond we got from Sams Club years ago.

    Jess, when I put my pond in I went to the US Fish & Wildlife, and they gave me lots of good data. Unfortunately that was 20 years ago, but they are a resource. I do remember it takes 5-7 adult bluegill to sustain one adult bass. Bluegill can spawn 3-4 times a year in the right environment. You will typically see circles in the bottom in the shallows of the pond that are just a bit bigger than a 5 gallon bucket. I wish you well, it's so much fun to foster a pond. I'm in Commifornia so might be slightly different based on weather.

    Visited a friend's pond over the weekend. Got tons of Crappies. Dinner was the best Monday afternoon! Threw out bass back. His older kids catch at other places and bring them to their pond to help keep up. Tons of eggs in the ones we kept. I imagine his pond will be over stocked by next summer. It's rarely fished aside from his friends.

    Cattails are great plants that are edible and able to be used for fire starting and love wet environments like the edges of ponds. Lilies also are great to have in a pond as every part of the plant can be used for food and it does produce beautiful flowers and helps with controlling evaporation and keeping the water cool when it's extremely hot.

    Jess, there is a Iris pseudacorus variegata, a variegated yellow aquatic iris. I live in the Netherlands, with lots and lots of ponds. Iris pseudacorus is a native plant that grows everywhere, the variegated version is lovely. Also Lythrum is beatyfull and good for bees and other pollinators. There are lots of plants that grow in boggy areas. Rheum, Darmera,acorus, several mentha varieties etc... Over here in every gardencentre there is a department with aquatic plants. I hope you can find what you want!

    Suggestion: I would add a floating spray fountain. This would serve a few different purposes. Adds oxygen to the pond and can also help keep he mosquito population down a bit as they're least likely to breed in moving water. And it's beautiful.

  • @annmc3878
    @annmc3878 2 года назад

    We have a half acre pond. We added an aerator after a fish kill. I love it as it looks like a little fountain. We occasionally get too much weed growth. We have a contraption that cuts the weeds and rakes them in. We used the pond weeds to fill the bottom of raised beds or just compost it. We also use straw bales to keep algae growth down. They sell rye straw for people with small ponds, but for big ponds it is cost prohibitive, but straw works the same. When my husband put the straw in all the turtle climb up on it, which is fun to see. You probably are in a warmer climate than we are (6b), but for colder climates you need a deeper pond so the fish can overwinter.

    My favorite aquatic is marsh marigold. It’s the earliest bloom on our property ❤️ definitely check what’s invasive around you. We have a much shorter list in New England. Hibiscus is beautiful & swamp milkweed is great for pollinators. Taro & pickerel rush are great too. There’s lots of water lily varieties. Mayla lily is our favorite & don’t forget lotus! You will swoon for those blooms.

    Aquatic plants are great! You should also try and keep terrestrial vegetation to retain and filter soil and nutrients that come from the rest of the farm when it rains or with the wind. Here in Quebec, Canada, it is recommended not to mow or remove plants at least 10m from the water line to create a riparian buffer strip. 🙂 On agricultural lands, it’s 3m so they don’t loose as much land.

    Such a great resource for more sustainable food...fish. I grew up fishing and eating our bounty when I was a kid.
    Drew is such a wealth of knowledge and the boys love him and look up tohim. He needs to stay close to you all.

    I think your pond might get too hot too. Have you thought about planting some trees around the edge? You will get some leaf fall, but also shade. The fish might stay in the middle to get away from heron fishing. Also floating plants protect fish and provide shade. I added aeration to my pond via a septic pump and weighted hose- it may need oxygen, although you have a large surface area. I might add rocks or concrete debris for hiding places.

    It would be cool to grow some cattails along the edges too. Cattails are very beneficial for medicinal purposes as well

    NJ has huge snapping turtles in my area that aren’t great for the local ponds, but we have a brook that travels through our property. Every year they show up in our yard to bury nests, but they never hatch. I think the regular heron visitors take care of the over flow of frogs, toads, fish and turtles.

    I live in E. WA, so quite a different climate than yours, but maybe this would work in your pond. There’s a small local river that’s pretty wild and has hiking trails on the bank. It has yellow iris growing all along the banks that will be in bloom here in a few weeks. Please check into how feasible this would be in your area. Iris is great to keep soil erosion at bay and it’s very lovely 😁

    Re: suggestions for aquatic & wetland planting - there is a great book by Doug Tallamy called “Bringing Nature Home” also Tallamy & Darke “The Living Landscape” Both would be outstanding resources!

    I would suggest stocking channel catfish in your pond they're very sustainable. A matter of fact when I was a kid there was a restaurant in our town with a big pond behind it filled with channel catfish that they would serve every Friday night in the restaurant. That's also why they Farm raise them. For commercial sales in grocery stores. Just a suggestion.

      Unlike other catfish they have a very clean flaky white Flesh. Delicious.
