  • Heading out of Menorca at dawn we set off for a day sail to the North East tip of Majorca with a forecast for increasing winds. Come aboard as we enjoy a sporty sail, spot a pilot whale, and, for the first time in a long time, encounter seas that have Iain taking over the helm from the auto pilot!
    After a night at anchor we head into the Port of Soller for protection from a storm and have a day out to Palma on the old wooden trams and trains.

    Thanks, folks. Great contentas usual. Shame that San Vincente was rough. We loved it there .

      Thanks Doug, yes sadly we had a lot of trouble with swell in the Balearics so didn’t get to spend as much time at anchor as we’d have liked…stunning islands though 😍

    Another great watch folks! Clever footage with what I assume is a long selfie stick!

      Hi Robin, thank you. Yes it’s a 360° camera (insta 360 X3) on a 3m selfie stick and the clever software does a good job of removing the stick. If you look closely you can sometimes see a bit of the stick but it’s pretty clever tech and gets drone like shots where I’d never be able to fly a drone 😊

    That sail to the island was thrilling it looked super, and your boat was going like a train.
    I can only imagine the price of that marina. 🤑W
    e are using a figure of 8 descender as a preventer it's cheap and simple. and covers port and starboard with a single line.
    What selfie stick are you using? It's some very impressive footage.

      @FollowIntrepidBear  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks guys it was a pretty cool sail 😃 The marina was run by the govt and was “only” €45/night. There are a few govt run ones that are sensibly priced. You can book online but sometimes they are full in the high season. The fig 8 descender is a good idea I’ll have a look into that. So the footage that looks like it’s filmed from off the boat is filmed on an Insta360 x3 camera with the insta 360 3metre selfie stick. The way the camera software works it removes most of the selfie stick although you can see a hint of it occasionally if you look very closely 😊⛵️

    That Incat ferry wasn’t actually part of the Condor fleet, she was with Hoverspeed operating out of Dover/Ramsgate/Newhaven mostly. And now I’m just disappointed in myself for writing this comment 😢

      It seems you are right! I speed read Google too quickly. Anyway Kate now says you’re an even bigger spotter than me so I’m not sure being right is a good thing 😉😂😂

    Interesting video. xx Why is the wheel so large Doesn't that make it less responsive???

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Norma, believe it or not our wheel is quite small compared to some sailing boats! As far as I know they are that size as you need the leverage to turn the rudder against the water pressure. If you had a small one it would be very difficult to turn unless you had a very high gear ratio in which case you’d need to turn it so many times. Think of the length of a tiller on boats without a steering wheel and the force needed to turn it so I think yacht steering wheels are a balance between the leverage you need and responsiveness…that’s just my understanding…I haven’t googled it! 😊⛵️

      @simonworby 4 месяца назад

      Surely it's so you can sit on either side and still reach the wheel to steer?

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  4 месяца назад

      I don’t know for sure but if that was the case then twin helm boats wouldn’t need them so big. A quick skim of google suggests that it’s mostly about leverage and response but on some race boats there’s an element of it being so the helm can get as far outboard as possible for racing. As I say I don’t really know for sure but it seems more about leverage. Our cockpit is narrow enough that we could reach a small wheel from either side. Interesting point though 👍🏻⛵️😊

      @@FollowIntrepidBear It's an interesting one because I agree with your Google results analysis, but I don't agree with what they actually say! With twin wheels they are always much smaller than a single wheel on a boat of the same size, otherwise they'd simply take up too much space -- which suggests leverage isn't the issue. Certainly I always learned the big wheels served the same purpose as a tiller extension, i.e. so you could sit on either side and see where you are going. On our boat if you sit in the middle certainly you can't see a thing when she heels over, but on the leeward side you can see under the genoa fine and on the windward side you can see everything else. A small wheel in the middle would be utterly hopeless for helm visibility. Your cockpit is much higher up so probably the same limitations don't apply.

      Interesting and valid points…I only really know what Google says. I guess maybe there’s a mix of factors with visibility being one of them…every days a school day as they say! 😊
