Ms. Vaskelainen, your reaction to this song is easily in the top 3 on YT. I can say that with confidence because I have listened to hundreds of them, and I have the playlist to prove it. Because I lack originality, I will repeat what I've said elsewhere: In 50 years, this is what HomeFree will be known for. Great reaction, I'm looking forward to many more from you.
When people mention that Adam Rupp is the only one in the group without facial hair, they don't realize that he needs to manipulate his hands and mouth as he makes these sounds and a beard would interfere with that ability.
I add my request you react to their cover of Dire Straits “Brothers in Arms”. It is an extremely powerful performance and for added incentive they utilized (with permission) the arrangement used by the Finnish group Club for Five.
In my whole life I have never favored a single band or singer. But for a good year now, I can't get away from these great guys. This video is one of the first I've seen from these guys and it took me a while to be sure - there is no harmonica. Home Free - these are five exceptional top talents. Great reaction, thanks!
Adam was doing a harmonica, and at the very beginning and the end, Chance was doing a Jews Harp, or mouth harp sound. If you watch the end, Chance is the last one they show and you can see how mouth making that sound.
These guys have a remarkable range of genres in which they excel and still give a good country twist. To follow up this one, you may want to react to their cover of Boyz 2 Men's "End of the Road" and/or a cover of Crosby, Still, and Young's "Helplessly Hoping". At any rate, it's a very deep rabbit hole. Have fun!
This song blew me away when I first heard it & I was completely hooked. These guys are all so talented. They lean towards country but they can do any genre. They all can take the lead depending on whos voice is best for the song. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there & their beatboxer vocal percussionist Adam Rupp can simulate any sound. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.
To hear their blend and precision check out their cover of "Helplessly Hoping". To hear them move out of country they do a cover of "American Pie" with the original singer Don McClean.
To hear Austin's yodel check out All About That Bass. Also, you need to check out How Great Thou Art, Auld Lang Syne, Crazy and Blue Ain't Your Color. The sound at the beginning imitates a jaw harp or Jews Harp.
Occasionally someone or group can capture the essence of a song so perfectly that even the original artist(s) will acknowledge it. This is one of those occasions, it's their song now.
Yes but leave it and Mayday for a while. After 6 or 7 songs you will appreciate them much better. Another one of Tim's with Peter Hollens is Greensleeves & it's awesome. Also Misty Mountains 🙂
That starting sound is actually mimicking a mouth harp. Chance is the one who actually does that sound. Thank you Anna for checking out Home Free, they are a lot of fun, and spot on in their application of techniques. So says the music nube. haha. Love from Florida.
Anna -- you have to stop creating such interesting and perceptive reactions. Really, it's not fair to other vocal analysts. Your reactions are just outstanding. Your excellent bilingual skills mean that I'm learning to understand Finnish.
What a nice and intelligent way to express appreciation and respect. I'm with you on this - and obviously lots of others as I take from the comments. There are - IMO - (only) few excellent reactors and Anna is definitly one of this top-tier. Thankful that she already introduced me to artists I didn't have in my focus so far. Learning can be real fun presented the way she does. Stay well 👍🎶🤝
I have to agree with Clandop. My mother - a Wuorinen from Vaasa - has been helping me remember the Finnish I learned as a child. Now I have even more incentive!
I think you've noticed more of their unique style in this video than most reactors do. The soundscape at the beginning is often missed (the record crackling, for instance, is produced by Adam Rupp, the beatboxer). Did you notice that when Tim's line was repeated, he was down an octave? Their talent is deep and wide. I hope you continue to react to this group. Home Frys, as the fans are called, are usually kind and loyal. I have subscribed and will return to hear your intelligent dissection. You are a master of your craft.
There's a lot of things I notice but if I'd talk about everything, it would make one insanely long video hahah! I was thinking how that crackling was done, amazing job! Thank you for your message! xx
This is a very old southern US song from about 1900, so it has some of those musical features that led to country and bluegrass. To really hear their blend, you may want to try one of their bare naked harmony songs like Helplessly Hoping. And for some of Austin's range, react to When A Man Loves A Woman, which is an old soul/R&B classic.
Harmony challenge is magnificent in their Helplessly Hoping version where Adam Rupp does NOT do any beatboxing. Thanks for your wonderful analysis and reaction!
Great in depth review. Adam really goes wild with the harmonica sound in their recent release cover of Garth Brooks Ain't Goin Down (Until the Sun Comes Up) a very fast and non stop lyrically paced song. The energy in it is amazing. Hope you react to it soon.
This is one of my favorites from Home Free which captures the original Soggy Bottom Boys style/genre while putting their own spin and unique touches (which you had so much fun with as a human harmonica!) The creativity to capture and use sounds not usually thought to come out of the human mouth is such a treat in acapella music. Mixing organic sounds into musical accompaniment and turning vocal harmonies into more than five voices is brilliant. This capability is especially noteworthy and spectacularly done in Home Free's treatment of a cover of Johnny Cash's classic, "Folsom Prison Blues." Very creative and a masterpiece worth your wonderful analysis skills. Regardless of what artist, or song, I look forward to your next reaction!
Old Kentucky vibes starting with a little bit Australian Didgeridoo, great country acapella of this male group. Vocal harmonica sound suggesting playing this instrument which actually is not there. Home Free, such a brilliant acting performance with the song Man in Contant Sorrow in perfect music harmony.
No, the didgeridoo has nothing to do with traditional Southern Appalachian Music. That instrument he’s imitating is a “jaw harp”, also known as a “juice harp” (because it causes a lot of saliva), which is placed in the mouth and plucked, or stroked with a finger. It’s sometimes mistakenly called “Jew’s harp” because “juice harp” wasn’t heard correctly.
Jew's harp. Nothing to do with the biblical people or religion. In this case the word Jew comes from the word Jaw, or mouth. In fact the harmonica is a Jaw (mouth) harp as well. The only difference basically is the Jaw harp has 1 reed whereas the harmonica (mouth harp) has many reeds.
As a metal head who appreciates good music of many genres, I have to say that I find your reaction to this performance at least as satisfying as the performance itself. Great reaction! 🙏🤘 from Germany
So many great songs to choose from with these guys. "End of the Road" Rob shows off his blues chops, but Austin has a big role. "When a Man Loves a Woman" is Austin's showcase. "Brothers in Arms" is a showcase of Tim's bass, but Adam Chance adds a lot of sweet baritone. Adam Rupp (human sound machine) has gotten even better at harmonica - check out "Workin' for a Livin'" - that also features Adam Chance (baritone/bass and "Guitar" on backing tracks I think) as lead. These guys have a GREAT sense of humor, so don't forget to check out the "Butts Remix/Medley" for a laugh (with still phenomenal singing). This one was before Adam Chance joined the group , so you'll see Chris Rupp here. After you're familiar with the guys and their roles in the group, "Mayday" is a must, but it's best to do it right after "Brothers in Arms" because it's also a Tim Foust (bass) lead. Do NOT do "Mayday" until you're familiar.
Anna could react to Mayday tomorrow and not miss a thing, she is a sharp one. I have seen "Do NOT do "Mayday" until you're familiar." backfire more times than it should. Some reactors can have Mayday as the 2nd song because they are just that good. I have full faith that Anna could do it as her 3rd song.
First song ive heard from Home Free. And what an iconic song. They killed this in style. Anna im even more impressed with your vast knowledge of singing styles. What tells me these guys are great is in all the comments for this reaction. so i must say i am a new fan of these here fellers. Thanks Anna, once more.
B-E-A-utiful reaction Anna... so glad you got to this Home Free song. One thing I like to bring to your attention is immediately after Tim's bass solo... when they harmonize his last solo phrase; he drops an octave. More on Adam Chance (beatboxer) check out his drum solo video live.
"Adam" Rupp (Beatboxer) did the harmonica and other effects in this song and does the drum solo video live. In this song, Adam "Chance" was also doing the mouth (or jaw or jews) harp effects which were especially noticeable at the beginning and end of the song..
Adam Chance uses a throat singing method to create the mouth harp sounds. Normally they use a looper for extended use of this sound because it becomes painful after a long period of use.
Ok - back to you again Anna! Isn't it strange that being a rock and metal fan I enjoy listening to a cappella bands so much? I guess I really am weird, but what can I do about it? I guess nothing, because I really do love very different - and often very distant from each other - kinds of music. I love this performance, this song! Maybe it's because I really like country music - not always and not all of it, but I do. And the country vibe is very present here. But there is something else - how in very different ways people can be talented! Some are masters of the guitar, some are masters of the drums, some are masters of the keyboard.... And some are masters of the most natural instrument - their voice! This is amazing and beautiful! But but - I am a little disappointed - Anna, where is your hat? You look incredibly beautiful in it, and it would have fit this song perfectly today! Ha, ha - see you next time!
Hi Marek! I find that metal music fans tend to have wider taste in music than many other ppl actually! 😊 It's good for the balance, eh? 😉 God damnit I knew someone was going to mention it! I shall wear it in my next reaction hahah!
Fantastic reaction, Anna! Love your nor-monica and overtone singing, although how they manage to make it sound so much like a jaw-harp still flabbers my gast. I was surprised you didn't emphasize how hard they lean into the rhotic vowels to give it that down-home sound, which is something that sticks out a lot to English speakers. I would have expected it to be even more obvious to non-native speakers, because southern R's (and American R's in general) are so strange. There's a hard rule in film that con-langs can't have R's in them, because the aliens / elves / etc immediately sound either American or French depending on placement. :)
Thx Christian! 😊 Well, mouth harp has a lot of common with overtone singing! There's a lot of things I choose not to mention so my videos wonät get insanely long. 😊
Absolutely fair. And on rewatching, you did immediately mention the r sounds at like 1:38, so I withdraw any implied criticism of your exceptional review.
Oh, I'm a huge fan of these guys, I prefer to hear Home Free than Pentatonix, there, I said it. And as a heavy metal guy, country is not my thing... nuff said. You got a huge list to cover Home Free songs: Colder Weather Mayday End of the Road When a Man Loves a Woman How Great Thou Art Helplessly Hoping You got content for months xD
Great choices. I'd add Do you hear what I hear Seven Bridges Road Woman, Amen/Female Love me Like That Everybody walking this Land Yours Cover me up Some girls do And some hilarious ones All about that bass Butts remix Workin' for a livin' And so many more. You have months & months of reaction material. It is all good. I haven't heard a song I don't like. I also like them better than PTX. Loved your reaction 💕
Your little snippet of "Country" singing, when you were trying to determine which key this was sung in, sounded amazingly similar to early 1900's recordings of American "Folk" music (the roots of "Country" music)! Wonderful reaction!!!
When I was in middle school, I had music class. I realized that I was musically tone deaf... I just cannot hear how wonderful all these singers and the incredible goosebumpy things they do. Dimash, Voctave, etc... So I enjoy watching reactors like yourself to help me appreciate these singers.... Thank you for giving the example of 'scoop up'. You mentioned it on the previous song but I tried replaying Tim's part and didn't get it. Now I know! =)
Adam Rupp learned the technique for the harmonica sound from Deke Sharon. You can find a short tutorial on Deke's channel. I think, you were already pretty close. BTW., Deke Sharon offers tutorials for several instrument sounds on his channel, which is mainly dedicated to modern a capella. He was also the one who gave Home Free the advice to concentrate on Country since there wasn't yet any Country a capella band.
They have the most varied repertoire of any group I know. Everything they do is perfection. Love listening to your Finnish! And your vocal analysis- subbed! 👍
Best reaction video on yt. I really enjoyed seenin a music "expert" that truly loved music. Too many are quite snobby about music. Your face lights up with your love of music. Thank you.
You nailed that human harmonica part !! I need a harmonica track on one of my songs. Are you in? LOL Great job as usual Anna. That made my day...Kiitos !
I love how after just one reaction you have taken the time to learn even the most basic knowledge of the guys. The recommendations that have been made are great. I don't know if it's been mentioned but I would say that after about 5 other songs, Mayday is a must ☺️
It's always a pleasure to see your passion for vocals and music. Another great break down and reaction. Thank you for your time. Good health to you and yours!
@@annavaskelainen my wife and I have been very busy for the past month landscaping around our house. So haven't been able to catch your live chats. Absolutely love the variety of artists you have been choosing, good job Ma'am. 👏 We are healthy and appreciative, for so many people are struggling during this time, helping others as we can. 😀
It's a blend of bluegrass music and country. The sounds have elements of the southern blend of Kentucky, Alabama , Bayou, and surrounding regions. The humming sound is mimicking a harmonica.
I believe you hit the no-monica as close as anyone I've heard trying it! Just missed the live . Adam Rupp (beatboxer and no-monica player, has a very short video on how he does the no-monica.

I loved this song and the variety of voices and harmony we heard from these guys, and I do not think anyone can do better than Adam with beat boxing :} ! I just loved your reaction and comments, and I have never learned so much from anyone's reaction or explanation than I learned listening to your wonderful analysis!! You catch everything, every little detail, and it makes it so fun and interesting to listen to you break down each part and each vowel sound and each voice inflection or run like you do. Thank you so much for your amazing reaction teaching!
Just found your channel thanks to the algorithm and I really enjoyed your reaction. I'm not a musician and I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but your commentary is so interesting even though I can't sing. You attempting the human harmonica cracked me up. I sense the giddiness in you as you experience the music and that is so fun to see. Love your accent and language so much and your smile is to die for, if you don't mind me saying. I'm off to binge more of your reactions.
A big thank you to the algorithm and welcome to the gang Mel! 😊 I'm happy to know that you find my content informative and entertaining! 🤠 Hope to see you here in the comment section and in the premiere live chats in the future! xx
That was great Anna!!! It is so nice to see you having fun while hearing good stuff!!! Now that you are on the acapella train from time to time,, could we expect a reaction to a Pentatonix song in the nearer future?? 😉😉 Have a great weekend!!!
Your reaction was enjoyed, what we in america take for normal while appreciating its nice to see someone from somewhere outside react to see what others think of our culture, everyone of those men are true to form country people to the core.
@@annavaskelainen I adore how you interact with us all in the chat and comments. Your videos are always fun and very informative. Your channel is going to grow by leaps and bounds. If you ever have a day where you need cheered up a little, Home Free has many fun and silly videos. I vote either Mayday or Brothers in Arms next. :D
Excellent reaction and analysis, AND you almost nailed getting the harmonica sound. Why did you stop after a few seconds, no one else seems to come anywhere near it? Very well done :-)
I love that you’re not shy about switching to your home tongue and having subtitles. It’s wonderful. Your English is quite good. Don’t try one or the other do both if it’s comfortable for you.
I loved your reaction and especially your analysis. Your ‘human harmonica’ was pretty impressive too! Thanks so much for this. [Edit September 2024] Now I just want to find out where Anna learned the word “soundscape!” Impressed on many levels.
You have come the closest to the harmonica sound out all the people that try it when reacting to this song. This is the second time I watched your reaction to Home Free. I enjoy how you can switch so easily from your native tongue to English which is just amazing. Thanks for the subtitles or I would have no idea what you are saying although your language is beautiful to listen to. Please react to another Home Free song when you have time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Stay well and be safe. If you react to another one of their songs may I suggest, When a Man Loves a Woman. Thanks in advance.
I enjoy your analyses of technique as well as aesthetics. Not to mention that I could listen to your accent all day. Your joy in beautiful sound is infectious.
I've seen some reactors actually LAUGH at them, rather than understand that there was technique they used that gave the song this sound. This was a rather complex arrangement.....keep doing more Home Free. Listen to their cover of Brothers in Arms, you may have a lot to say about that one too ! (Käytän Google-kääntäjää, joten anteeksi, jos se sotkee käännöksen ja kutsuu sinua torakan kaltaiseksi LOL) Siunattua viikonloppua ja tee enemmän kotoa ilmaiseksi !!!
...but humor is present here, and it's intentional. The entire Country genre is self-mocking. We're allowed to laugh. And we're allowed to appreciate the wonderful arrangement, the detailed layering of exquisitely-blended voices. We're allowed to take anything we like from the song. Art which is obvious is dull; it's only when art has many layers and many possible interpretations that it becomes interesting. These artists understand the point very well. The videographer does, too. The group isn't performing on a stage before an audience (serious), but next to an alligator-infested swamp (which is silly). Self-mocking, you see? But there is nothing silly about the quality of the production. It's excellent. Layers of meaning, and humor is in the mix.
@@Urgelt If you really have no context maybe you check it first before assuming something as you did. About 6 months ago a channel reacted to this song by Home Free, and it was not laughing with them, which I certainly don't laugh, but were mocking them and called them moron hillbillies. As for your comment about the swamp - you obviously either no nothing about the South in the US or are just painfully unobservant. I live (born & raised) in Miami, and have lived about 5 miles from the entrance to Everglades National Park. Please don't preach to me or the other 4 million residents of Miami-Dade County about being near swamps. There was no intent of humor here but to depict a more than 100 year old song and give it, it's rightful due as it is a bluegrass genre song.
If you enjoyed Austin's 'kinda' yodeling in this song, you should check out their cover of 'Thank God I'ma Country Boy.' He straight up yodels in that one. Also, if you want to see some of what Adam Rupp, the beatboxer can do with his voice when he really gets going, check out 'Adam Rupp's Drum Solo.'
The most interesting reactions to this song that I have seen. Obviously she really knows music. (And Finnish). She analyzes and in a fun way. A nice mix of enjoyment and analysis. Def subscribed.
for an interesting breakdown of their clean harmonies, I would suggest Helplessly Hoping, and to hear Rob give a bit of growl, check their version of End of the Road.
I just discovered your channel and I really enjoy it. One of my uncles by marriage was first generation American. Both of his parents were from Finland so he spoke Finnish. I am so sorry that he never taught any of us to speak any of the language. I think it is beautiful.

@@Kodiak660 Yeah, after re-watching, she knew Tim by name when the bass solo came in. I still suggest doing "Brothers in Arms" first.
For another harmonic solo check out their song Ain't Going Down til the Sun Comes Up.
First song ive heard from Home Free. And what an iconic song. They killed this in style. Anna im even more impressed with your vast knowledge of singing styles. What tells me these guys are great is in all the comments for this reaction. so i must say i am a new fan of these here fellers. Thanks Anna, once more.
Iconic is a great way to describe this! Thanks Darold! xx
Thank you! 😊🎵
There's a lot of things I notice but choose not to mention so my videos won't get insanely long. 😂
It's good for the balance, eh? 😉
God damnit I knew someone was going to mention it! I shall wear it in my next reaction hahah!
Really looking forward to this... Home Free are such a great reaction content :)
And as a heavy metal guy, country is not my thing... nuff said. You got a huge list to cover Home Free songs:
Colder Weather
Mayday
End of the Road
When a Man Loves a Woman
How Great Thou Art
Helplessly Hoping
You got content for months xD
🤠
Great choices. I'd add
Do you hear what I hear
Seven Bridges Road
Woman, Amen/Female
Love me Like That
Everybody walking this Land
Yours
Cover me up
Some girls do
And some hilarious ones
All about that bass
Butts remix
Workin' for a livin'
And so many more.
Wonderful reaction!!!
oh did it? 😂
Thanks! ❤️ xx
Now I know! =)
oh are you really tone deaf? I'm glad you find my content helpful and informative Karen!
You should check out Mayday…you would be amazed to see the role reversals in that song…😅
They have the most varied repertoire of any group I know. Everything they do is perfection. Love listening to your Finnish!
And your vocal analysis- subbed! 👍
the birth of a "home-fry" ?.....i could listen to Anna speak Finnish all day long.....
Best reaction video on yt. I really enjoyed seenin a music "expert" that truly loved music. Too many are quite snobby about music. Your face lights up with your love of music. Thank you.
Both Tim and Austin have done some exceptional singles. Austins "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables is exceptional.
Song published in 1913 and made popular in the 2000 movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou."
Did you see Austin wink at you towards the very end. Sly hansome devil he is with a great vocal..... Great reaction Anna.
Missed that! Need to back and catch it now 😂 xx
You nailed that human harmonica part !! I need a harmonica track on one of my songs. Are you in? LOL Great job as usual Anna. That made my day...Kiitos !
Did I ??! 😂 I think I need to practice a little more hahah!
Have a great weekend David! xx
I very much enjoyed your reaction, and want to see many more Home Free reactions from you. Please, more HF
more HF coming ! xx
I love how after just one reaction you have taken the time to learn even the most basic knowledge of the guys.
The recommendations that have been made are great. I don't know if it's been mentioned but I would say that after about 5 other songs, Mayday is a must ☺️
Happy to know you find my content educating! 😊 Mayday is in my list! xx
@@annavaskelainen I look forward to more of your Home Free reactions 🙂
The way you describe Tim is the way we would describe you 😂❤️
awwwwww aren't you the sweetest! ❤️
they have three sopranos, 5 altos, 5 tenors, 2 basses and 2-3 beatboxers so the wealth of talent to bring to the project is monumental!!
You should totally do their version of "Mayday" now, while this song is fresh in your mind.
It's always a pleasure to see your passion for vocals and music. Another great break down and reaction. Thank you for your time. Good health to you and yours!
Nice to "hear" from you Todd! Making this reaction was so much fun. 🤠🎵
How are you? xx
@@annavaskelainen HomeFree just makes me smile and changes my mood for the better. For me, that's what it is all about.
Try their adaptation of "Brothers in Arms" . BTW, Chance is doing Mongolian Throat Singing (more than just hard to do).
I agree! It was the best attempt so far lol
What?! Really? I'll quit my day job then and become a "no-monica" player" 😂🤠
I'll check Adam's video about the harmonica sound for sure! xx
Yes, definitely the best attempt at the "no-monica! "

Thank you for your kind words Ron! 😊 Happy to provide you content that you find both entertaining and educating! ❤️
Great reaction. Pretty good harmonica sound also 😉😉 Thank you. Peace and blessings from Ohio, USA.
Thx, I'll keep practicing my "no-monica" ! 🤠🎵
Greetings to Ohio! xx
I'm happy to know that you find my content informative and entertaining! 🤠
Hope to see you here in the comment section and in the premiere live chats in the future! xx
That was great Anna!!! It is so nice to see you having fun while hearing good stuff!!! Now that you are on the acapella train from time to time,, could we expect a reaction to a Pentatonix song in the nearer future?? 😉😉 Have a great weekend!!!
I had so much fun while doing this! 😂 Pentatonix are in my list!
Have a great weekend you too! xx
Only thing missing in this reaction is your cuteness in a cowboy hat 🤠 😄
hahahah 😂🤠 I was thinking if someone is going to mention the absence of my hat!
After man of constant sorrow watch Mayday
You made my day Anna especially with your lovely harmonica sound tries 👍😂 I can't catch my breath now
🤠 Yee haw
Love her voice and reaction. Beautiful
Your harmonica sound was pretty damn good!!
Anything Home free tries is amazing. 👏
Now you need to react to Home Free's cover of End of the road (original by Boys 2 Men)
You will never be the same after this one. ;)
Very true.
Your reaction was enjoyed, what we in america take for normal while appreciating its nice to see someone from somewhere outside react to see what others think of our culture, everyone of those men are true to form country people to the core.
Watching in Home Depot! Great job Anna!
🤠 Thx Kodiak! xx

Great reaction video 👍have a great day and hello from Arizona ✌😎☀️
Thx and greetings to Arizona! Have an amazing week! xx
I love that you’re not shy about switching to your home tongue and having subtitles. It’s wonderful. Your English is quite good. Don’t try one or the other do both if it’s comfortable for you.
You should react to their Sea Shanty Medley!
I enjoyed your Annalisis. You let the melody flow without spoiling to performance. Brilliant. 👍
Have I?! 😂
I'm glad you appreciate the cc, I put a lot of time and effort in them! xx
Anna, you are the best critic. and beauty aswell.
You were so excited your face turned red lol. Great video Anna and cool earrings!!

Love your reactions, thank you 😊🔥
❤️
I enjoy your analyses of technique as well as aesthetics. Not to mention that I could listen to your accent all day. Your joy in beautiful sound is infectious.
Thank you Steven ❤️
Your reactions are delightful, entertaining and educational. Thank you!
😊🙏 thank you very much! xx
