You keep calling the genre "Country". Pretty sure it is "Bluegrass". The singing style emulates the phrasing typical of the fiddle playing and blues harp of the Appalachian region.
Home Free is an all A cappella group. Most people don’t realize the drums, harmonica, etc are done by their talented beat boxer. No instruments other than the voice. It’s quite amazing.
Adam is beyond talented. His beat boxing is SO impressive, many of my friends thought it was just a drum kit. The things he's able to do is unbelievable. My favorite thing he does is a "cross stick" sound in "Ring of Fire (w/ Avi Kaplan).
Yes he's doing it simply with his voice. The lead is from South Georgia and has family roots in Southern Gospel Music. Would really love to see you review their combo of Wagon Wheel/Song of The South as well as How Great Thou Art. Foust is a freak of a bass.
The R in "Lover" is called a *rothic* "R" and is quite specific to the southern accent - and that's probably why it is present there. (it's not lovah.. is lov'r) This is typical of Virginia Piedmont southern accent. You will not get this in Florida, but is widely present in southern Viriginia, the Carolinas, portions of Georgia, Alabama. and Kentucky.
The lead singer Austin Brown is from South Georgia so it's a true accent lol! I've seen them do this live on stage, there is no harmonica, I was in the second row close to stage on Adam Rupp's (beatboxer) side of the stage and got a good view of him doing that harmonica sound with his mouth. It was amazing!
Kind funny you should mention Austin as the lead singer. Yes, he is the lead on this song, but I find it amazing that 4 of the 5 members can and do sing lead. So much talent...
Belinda G I’ve seen Adam Rupp do the harmonica sound too! No gimmicks, it is his mouth only doing it. And all the other sounds he can do, wow. But what I love the most is how he keeps it simple and always fitting for the song and does not overdo or enhance himself. Only in his solo he does that :D
@@sethkraai9075 I've seen them live, twice. Adam just blew us away with his drum solo. My sister does not listen to country music (I made her go to the first concert with me). That was over a year ago and she still asks me if "that guy" does the drum solo in all the shows. Yes, he does.
Had the honor of hosting their shooting of "Amazing Grace" with Peter Hollens at my church. It was a lot of fun to watch their process, and get a sneak preview of how those vocals turned out.
That is the video/song that made me a Home Fry! I found Peter Hollens on accident and once I saw the video of Peter and Home Free, well I've been a fan of both ever since. Thanks for hosting these amazing people so they could do an amazing video of my second favorite gospel song. They also do my favorite which is How Great Thou Art.
The art as a singer is about technique. The art as a performer is to become the song. When you have both, you move people. As for country music, once infected with it, there's no effective inoculation to cure that infection. I will leave it up to the reader to decide if that is a good or bad thing, but once you feel it, It's kinda like the blues. And once you feel the blues, then there's no going back. It is a musical form of freedom that has no equal and it is so liberating. Music for the musician as opposed to the music lover is not what we do, it's who we are. I was impressed at your analysis. You are quite perceptive and I enjoyed your commentary. You explained it quite well but most of all, you get it!
Great review Tara. Loved the reaction. Home free stated on "the singoff" that they spend 200 days on the road touring. They seem to shrug off all the distraction and their singing is amazing. They just released a cover for boys ll men "end of the road" if you want to hear a different genre. They covered the song amazingly. I was impressed.
armlann so I dont think of myself as a fan of Country music. I have liked a few country songs hear and there..... but when I saw them on The Sing Off I was an instant fan. I could listen to them Forever.
you missed an opportunity to comment on the crazy sounds that the "percussion" guy was doing. you KINDA noticed the harmonica, but you missed the jews harp, drums, and the wood block sounds he was making. they all sounded awesome and real.
Love that you HAVE and can Give what country musice is about and the feel and difference to what you do and show us all that every type of music has merit and beauty to it Thanks for that reaction
I'm almost...speechless!! THANK YOU for such an awesome reaction and such thoughtful commentary!!....so delightful to hear such appreciation for these guys we all dearly love!!....would love to see you react to their official video of "How Great Thou Art" (filmed in the Austrian Alps)!!
Home Free's "Do You Hear What I Hear" & "O' Holy Night" are so beautiful they make me cry! BTW: I can't believe how much I've learned about vocals in ONE day just by watching YOUR videos! Thank you so much!
Denil Joseph actually the high reverb growl at 5:33 was chance and not tim. Thats why the video focuses on chance at that part. Chance can hit almost the same low ranges as tim at a much higher reverberated sound so they tend to use his voice to accent tim’s and its prevalent here.
@@arcticzzshadow8421 Indeed - Since Chance joined the group they've had a much smoother bass/baritone sound field as they can either do as you've just mentioned or Chance can ease into supporting the underlying base tone while Tim rises to sing in whatever register is called for (pretty much means anything when you've got a five Octave range like he does). And of course the two can trade back and forth if the piece requires it. They do it so smoothly that few people even notice it happening which is really impressive.
I stumbled upon Ms. Simon's channel by accident. I am very glad that I did. Of all the reaction videos from vocal coaches that I have watched, Ms. Simon has taught me more than anyone else. Not in how to sing, mind you, as I couldn't hold a note in a bucket with Autotune, but rather in what I am hearing. The more I watch her videos, the more appreciation I have for what I am hearing when I listen to someone sing. Thank you, Ms. Simon.
Your critique is as amazing as the performance, so insightful. Your ears are wired for perfect pitch. Well done. Really enjoyed your video today as a fan of "country." Thank you.
Thanks for making this video. Your reactions are intelligent, insightful, and enjoyable. Your professionalism and ability to clearly communicate really comes through.
That drum sound must be the gator banging his tail on a log and not a beatboxer plus accutune. Studio productions are more lipsync than real sounds. Still good music but reminds me of disco machines.
Tara, I love your reactions. This song makes me want to row the boat into the middle of a pond with you and my guitar and just sing country songs with you all day! You are too cool!
They can do any genre. It’s amazing how versatile they are. The percussion guy is amazing. He was doing the harmonica with his mouth. They are terrific live. Love your assessment...and your voice.❤️
Also love your reaction at 5:35 when you hear Tim hit that lower register! He actually can hit lower notes...Ring of Fire, Blue ain’t your Color, Butts Remix, and several others.
Ohhhh myyyy gooodness! I have never seen or heard of this group before. Wow! I am now a fan, and will be checking out more of their music. Beautiful! 😃🤭♥️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
If you want more cohesive sounds, look up their Auld Lang Syne, or Helplessly Hoping. Those two are beyond amazing. Thanks, Tara. I always enjoy your take on those little specific details that most of us wouldn't have caught, without you pointing them out.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "country digs its heels into what it is unapologetically". I think that's what makes it so great. I love country, country rock, rockabilly, southern rock, early Rock & Roll, blues, old school R&B and soul (ike 40s to 70s). Those genres (maybe not R&B anymore) tend to be very loyal to their roots. Popular music these days seems very artificial, processed and machine made. That's why I like the older stuff.
I love how you are amazed at how low Tim gets every time you hear it. It's not the first time you've reacted to it: He hit that deep note at the end of their a capella / reggae version of Ring of Fire on The Sing-Off. Also, Adam is making those sounds strictly from vocals, which also amazed you when he took off in their live rendition of Ring of Fire.
A very objective and honest comment video from a vocal coach. Good job. You have a great voice BTW. I'm not a musician just an enjoyer. Super insightful and educated analysis while enjoying the music. Praise and honest critique. So honest but not rejecting. Encouraging. I enjoy this song more considering your take.
He's done Greensleeves, Sound of Silence, and Bridge Over Troubled Water with Peter, too. Greensleeves and Bridge Over Troubled Water videos were both done on the Oregon coast.
I was lucky enough to see Home Free live and they sang this at the concert. They're amazing and the vocals live are incredible. You can tell they work very hard and put such effort into their performances. The harmonica sound was done vocally by Adam Rupp the beatboxer and in the concert Austin Brown joined in making harmonica sounds also. Your reaction was lovely, interesting and informative. Enjoyable reaction thank you .
Love your reaction!! These guys are so good; truly educated musicians each & every one & it shows. May I suggest their official cover of "Helplessly Hoping" as it is pure ear candy that a vocal expert would go crazy over. It's their perfect blending & "skills" that make it outstanding. It's a perfect example of everything you are talking about. Check it out & you'll see what I mean. Thx so much for the reaction! (Fun fact; you mentioned Voctave... Austin [high tenor, main lead in this video] used to sing with most of those members as the "Voices of Liberty" at Disney World a couple yrs before joining HF. Small world in the a capella world).
This was an amazing review!!! Love the precise explanations and coaching tips. Never thought about some of the nuances she discussed. I learned a great deal.
As a lover of true acapella music they are the best I have ever heard hands down. I have found I am able to get down almost as low as what Tim can and Richard from the Oak Ridge Boys who I have loved since the early 80s.
Love home free! You should hear them do a pop song!! Their version of Mercy is incredible! They practically have two basses who are both so talented! Tim and Chance are incredible! And obviously the whole group is amazing!
Yas! she's from FL, represent! I'm in the southern area it's suburban :) also this group is my new obsession love that lead singer he's amazing he can sing to me any damn day! Love you Tara you're awesome props to being Angelina hales coach she's also ultra talented great channel love you much success God bless!
I love that you reacted to Home Free!!! Please react to their song, Mayday. It's one of their best songs. Home Free is a very underappreciated acapella group, and I hope that you react to more of their songs! They're all amazing!
I would really love to see your reaction to Home Free's cover of "Blue Ain't Your Color" (NOT the one from "Sing Off" but the produced video from March 2017). It's really excellent.
Tara, please do a review of Tim Foust, I can't help falling in love with you. If you want to hear Tim Foust, the bassist of Home Free, at his best, and all his range.
You’ve gained a fan! You’re great at what you do! You catch the runs, notes, and all the other simple amazing stuff in their vocals that most people may not realize or notice. On a side note: this is my first time seeing your work but i can tell you can probably sing your buuuuuutt off as well. Would be great to hear it. Side side note: to whom it may concern.. if not already.. somebody wife her up. Gorgeous, driven, and intelligent. Great Job!
Hello Tara again ! Those guys are amazing and what i am expecting them to sing is Tennessee Whiskey , which is one of my Favorite songs !!!! All of them were good , but the most "exotic" one's to my ears are the beatboxer and the bass guy Tim Foust .
Home Free is an a capella group. Every sound you hear comes from their voices. Adam is their beatbox, and it is amazing the sounds he makes. He is so much fun to watch.
I am so glad that you understand country singing! Even though I know the R was ok there, it made me pause just as you did. I grew up singing in choir but also loving country. It is interesting how you can go back and forth in style just by knowing where your song comes from and really feeling it. Country is singing with an accent. Home Free is fabulous; I am so glad you reacted to this one!
That was a Great reaction, I loved it !!!! Home Free is my favorite group and I appreciated your explanations. Please, please more reactions to Home Free. They have so many great songs, but "How Great Thou Art" is a favorite.
I've seen them live twice, and they are absolutely unbelievable. Yes, all of the song is A Capella. Their beat boxer is unreal, and every live show he does a solo section while the rest of them take a break. After Tim's solo (the bass) in this song, he drops an octave lower. He is unbelievable with his technique.
Hi Tara I love your reactions as someone who also love good acapella music, when I was in school I was in choir and did some acapella as well and Home Free is the very best I have heard in a long time. Yes I am a music lover and have dedicated my life to music. Love your input
These guys are great. They performed "Elvira" with The Oakridge Boys and the bass note toward the end with blow your ever loving mind. It's not live, but a great watch and you should check it out! I know you'll appreciate it.
There's two other great ones for Home Free. "How Great Thou Art" and "Auld Lang Syne" to cap off the holidays. "Fishing in the Dark/Down in the Boondocks" is a great mashup, and there's some live performances posted up.
If you want to be completely blown away, you have to listen to Auld Lang Syne by Home Free. Incredible song by them. Also if you’re up for a twist in the group, Mayday is definitely a must. It really shows that the very talented people you think you know, really have a lot more to show than you think. Keep up the reviews!!
I'm so happy that you reacted to more Home Free, and I loved your analysis, but I'm also a little sad because I know you prefer reacting to live performances, and there actually are very good recordings of Home Free performing this song live. (Let alone that imo, the live version is even better than the studio recording.)
I like live performances too, but the guys (Greenshoe)that produce HF videos do such a great job. And the biggest problem with recording a live performance is the sound. The subtleties of a Cappella demand great sound or you lose out.

This was an amazing review!!! Love the precise explanations and coaching tips. Never thought about some of the nuances she discussed. I learned a great deal.
Love your content Tara! His voice is soo deep!
React to “Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair” by Peter Hollens please!!!
That's a beautiful song tho, I've recommended it once.
I fall in love with my wife all over again to the black is the color song.
Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES"!
I agree!
I just stumbled on your reaction to David Phelps -- my favorite singer and now you are showcasing my favorite group -- Thank you :*)
Tara, please do a review of Tim Foust, I can't help falling in love with you. If you want to hear Tim Foust, the bassist of Home Free, at his best, and all his range.
Tim Foust - Vocal Range (A0-A5) (By Axel Fuentes) for Tim's full vocal range. At the time of recording... LOL ruclips.net/video/x3i1D22zszM/видео.html
Actually, Tim is using only about half of his range in Can't Help Falling In Love. :)
I think your description of the "skills" needed for ensemble is right on point... rarer than great solo work.
Well explained on the stylized 'hard R' sound! Love the 'nomonica'!
Great Job!
Tara: *sees and hears the Bass
Tara: I love him
Me: Me too
Recently discovered Home Free...insane talent. I respect you for respecting that bass👍
React To Home Free- End Of The Road Cover
I've seen them live twice, and they are absolutely unbelievable. Yes, all of the song is A Capella. Their beat boxer is unreal, and every live show he does a solo section while the rest of them take a break. After Tim's solo (the bass) in this song, he drops an octave lower. He is unbelievable with his technique.
I loved that comment, "let's listen to his butt one more time." at 7:00
Hi Tara I love your reactions as someone who also love good acapella music, when I was in school I was in choir and did some acapella as well and Home Free is the very best I have heard in a long time. Yes I am a music lover and have dedicated my life to music. Love your input
These guys are great. They performed "Elvira" with The Oakridge Boys and the bass note toward the end with blow your ever loving mind. It's not live, but a great watch and you should check it out! I know you'll appreciate it.
Tara I love the insight you bring to your reactions and mayI day with the deepest respect that you are simply gorgeous
You should check out Bridge over Troubled Waters by Tim Foust (bass singer of Home Free) and Peter Hollens!
I love your reactions Tara because you express how I feel listening to these artists. Orgasmic!
I would love to see you react to their version of "When a man loves a woman"
You need to watch so many more of their videos!!!! They are so underrated, and are all soooo talented!!
all i could say is tim foust bass. yes. in this song. 😇❤️
sidenote i love your notes and videos!! thanks and keep on doing what your doing!
Amazing. Your analysis, I mean.
And the hair. I used to have hair like that, only with spiral curls, natural, you know back in my 80's rock days
There's two other great ones for Home Free. "How Great Thou Art" and "Auld Lang Syne" to cap off the holidays. "Fishing in the Dark/Down in the Boondocks" is a great mashup, and there's some live performances posted up.
I love how you explained placement and how it adds to the genre. I heart you ❤️
PTX and Home Free are my fave acapella groups!
Jeskyaa Lee yes!!! agreed! matt from pentatonix and tim from home free are my 😇😇
I found you because of my love for Pentatonix, and have now found so many other great groups. Thank you.
I love your analysis and commentary. 😎
Great! More Home Free
Extremely well presented. very informative. I loved it.
I'm so happy that you reacted to more Home Free, and I loved your analysis, but I'm also a little sad because I know you prefer reacting to live performances, and there actually are very good recordings of Home Free performing this song live. (Let alone that imo, the live version is even better than the studio recording.)
I also prefer the live version of this song, mostly because of the dual harmonicas that Austin and Adam do!
I like live performances too, but the guys (Greenshoe)that produce HF videos do such a great job. And the biggest problem with recording a live performance is the sound. The subtleties of a Cappella demand great sound or you lose out.
