    you are the first review that i have seen that has talked about the genius system but also brought up some of the serious cons about price and adaptability to the older versions of their filters, and lack of front caps in the kit, stellar review keep em comin

      Hey hey, appreciate the kind comment - totally wanted to give my honest opinion on this. From a product standpoint, it wouldn't be difficult for them to create a MagLock adapter with female threads that would allow standard filters to be attached - they could offer a "conversion kit plate" of some sort. I've put my 82mm filers over their baseplate and don't see any vignetting of any sort. Curious if someone (or maybe me who knows!) will create something, even a 3D printed one with some magnets could be interesting haha -
      Luckily I had some points with them so I was able to order another cap for free but when you buy the kit, it should absolutely come with 2 caps (one for each base plate) and the front/rear caps for the VND itself.

      @@notmattlara it is interesting that you have tried putting the filters over your 82mm and see no vignetting, (was the lens thread smaller than 82mm like a 77mm) they replied to a comment on their promo video with this "The Helix Filters are larger, we looked at adaptors to make 82mm filters compatible but they started vignetting at like at 45mm. MagLock has a lot more infrastructure than a traditional threaded filter which makes it incompatible." I mean i get it they are a company that is out to make money with their products, understandable but also sitting on the flip side like you with a stack of filters that feel useless or even more difficult to use is very frustrating. Not to mention that there are armies photographers out there like myself that use light pollution filters and other fun things that if using that system become vastly more difficult to enjoy in the end. Also that a CP one of the most common filters is not in the initial release......kind of baffling to me. Real talk though, you come up with an adaptor and im in....LOL take my money HAHAHA.

      I would definitely need to do some real world testing and not just studio room testing as far as vignetting but I don't see why it's not possible. The new filter casing is indeed bigger, but the glass that is visible to the lens is about 80.5mm, identical to the screw-on 82mm filter glass. Now you wouldn't be able to stack the old model filters but you could still use them.
      I get it as well, they are a company and want to make new products and create more income, but when I have spent almost 1K on filters, it's definitely a bummer. Ultimately, we can still unscrew the new baseplate and use the old filters like the old days haha. Also great point about the CP, very odd there isn't one, I typically only use a CP for reflections but it's in my bag at all times -
      I am just finishing some production runs on synthesizer conversion kits for modular synths, maybe when I get some time I can look into designing something, the difficult part would be replicating their buttons to add and remove the lens but it could be a fun project!

    Matt, great video thank you! Just purchased my first, got the MIST. So far am loving it. Question for you, or anyone else in the thread. What's the opinion on ditching lens hoods for adopting this system. Obviously it's super easy to switch filter from lens to lens, or different Helix filters, or even just take the filter off and leave the adapter ring on your lens. But becomes a bit more of a pain when you are unscrewing the adapter ring so that you can put your hood back on. As well, when hoods are not in use, they can take up valuable real estate in camera bags. Thanks!

      Tbh I mainly shoot video or street photography and never use a hood (I am use sun glares as creative effects) I tried 3 other magnetic filter brands and returned every single one. Went all in on the Helix system and now all my lens have the mount for them. Expensive but happy I did it!

      @@notmattlara Matt, makes complete sense. I find the vast majority of what I shoot is sports related, and mix of photo and video, so I believe the Helix system will be a great one for me. I do also take landscape and astro photography. Of course for astro, not worried about lens flare. For landscape, not hard to remove the Helix if needed for a hood.

    Hey Matt ! Nice review, actually the first one I watched that doesn't seemed to be sponsored. Thanks for the honnesty regarding the system, for such a price, it's important to know the cons before buying ! I actually started looking at videos about Maglock because my 77mm Goldmorphic just got stuck in my UV filter, and it happens so easily with these filters... This new system looks much easier and more adapted to hybrid shooters. The only question I have is concercing vignette. If you use the 15-35 with a VND and a Goldmorphic, is it that visible ?
    Thanks in advance and thanks again for your review !

      Hey there, thanks - glad the honesty came across in the video, I am definitely a PolarPro fan but wanted to give my true opinion. I have since acquired the MIST, CP, and VND. I still use my screw-on's for the morphics. I would imagine that with a VND and another filter stacked on top you would absolutely get some vignetting at 15mm, probably even up to 18-19mm. I don't think that should stop you from going with the filter system - thats pretty common on any system at that wide of an angle = hope this helps!

      @@notmattlara Thanks for your reply ! Honnesty is the biggest value for these kind of reviews. Glad I got to see this video in my feed. Concerning the filter, it seems really convenient. I was not hoping for some miracles concerning the vignetting, but it's still nice to know you can use them without too much of it at 19mm when stacked !

    How does it compare ( including with wider angles lenses and photography) to the new Freewell k2 vnd, the Nisi vnd true colors and the kase Wolverine revolution vnd ? ( those seem to be the very top vnd, mostly magnetic filter, except the nisis) in terms of optical quality, colorimetry etc

    I have a lens with a 55mm threading size. How do I get the helix filter on that?

    • @notmattlara
      @notmattlara  7 месяцев назад

      You can get a 55mm to 67mm step-up ring and buy the 67mm base plate or step-up to whatever size you want. I would go with 82mm since that's the most common size for filters.

    is it possible to use the helix mag lock and a MYST filter both together at the same time? if yes what size should the myst be so it can fit the helix VND?

    • @notmattlara
      @notmattlara  Год назад

      It is possible but you have to buy the Helix MIST edition so they snap together, you can't use a regular screw on filter on top of the Helix system

    are you able to put another filter on top of that VND? For example, I wanted to use my blackrpomist on top of that VND? is there a way to screw it on?

    Do you lose your original lens covers?
    Can you still use your lens hoods with these?
    Also, do they include a circular polarizer?

    • @notmattlara
      @notmattlara  8 месяцев назад

      Original lens cover won’t work with it, I haven’t tried the lens hood but given the design, I would image it wouldn’t work either.
      They do not include a polarizer of any kind, you’d have to buy it separate :(

    • @notmattlara
      @notmattlara  Год назад

      The baseplate has standard threads (82mm, 77mm, etc) so if your filter can thread on a lens and then has threads on the front to stack, technically it could

    Answer is no an absolute rip of something available 3 years already now only benefit is lock but that it doesn't allow you to have CPL & 1 stop like in Freewell & you have to pay another USD 300 to get 6-9 wait another 200 for the mist wait another 400 for blue gold streak hmm you forget you have to pay for Peters name.
