Kos, BJ, and Rampage were all too self-centered to be coaches. Conor has talent (several fighters have vouched for his coaching abilities, including guys he's beaten like Eddie Alvarez), but I agree that his substance abuse problems get in the way. Finally, Ken Shamrock was never a good coach as his methods were considered outdated and inefficient even in his heyday. The Lions' Den succeeded in spite of him, not because of him.
i'm siding with BJ on the Gabe and Andy situations.... i think those were cases of fighters letting themselves down, and he was right to be frustrated!
With Gabe, he should've nipped it early but I'm sure by the time he realized it was too little too late I think. It's hard to gauge if his team knew immediately he wasn't making weight or it was a realization after. With Andy, yeah. BJ told him to grapple. In that scenario you just do what you're told. Even if he looses, BJ is partially to blame as well. But Andy chose to stand up .
when training with a 2007 BJ Penn, it's better to shut up and listen. Gabe missed weight because he was afraid to fight. Andy lost because he thought he had the skills of Roy Jones Jr..
Yeah I actually have to say Ken shamrock don't get me wrong man I respect what that guy did for the sport. But he was a pretty good coach from what I understand back at the Lion's den so to see him look so discombobulated on The ultimate fighter what's so hard to watch... I didn't actually think rampage was that bad at least he was entertaining

But to be fair besides Ed herman and kalib starnes his team was easily the weakest next to rampages tuf 10 team.
Prior to that season of Ultimate Fighter I though Evans was really full of himself and sort of an arrogant jerk. But watching them both in coaching roles I found Evans was great at being a team player and helping his guys while Rampage seemed like the jerk.

Shamrock was really terrible. When you can make Tito look like a compassionate genius by comparison, you know you had to have an endless amount of terrible mistakes. Almost get the idea that he didn’t want the guys he was “training” to get better than him.

Keep in mind.... The Ultimate Fighter IS a reality show..... You are not seeing 24-7 footage. You are only seeing what the producers of the show WANT you to see. They need to create a narrative and keep drama going to keep ratings up. They have to create a good guy and a bad guy.... The fighters who have complained about their coaches could be lazy bastards who dont listen to them for all we know.... Nobody knows what is going on outside of what the producers are showing you. Ken Shamrock and the rest of these guys may very well be the shows worst coaches.... But then again, maybe not. For all we know, Matt Hughes and GSP were terrible coaches who just ignored their weaker fighters and only worked with the good ones.... Hughes is known for looking down on people who do not follow Christ. I'm sure that affects the way he helps those who believe vs those who don't.... and there is a LOT who dont.....

And I still laugh when he mocks Andy Wang's crying for losing, during the fight Penn screams "Take him down" repeatedly but Wang chose to stand & strike, bloody cry baby 😭😭😭😭😭
