Haarlem, The Netherlands - Better than Amsterdam?

- We traveled from our home in Amsterdam just a short distance west, to the city of Haarlem. Many people have told us how much BETTER Haarlem is than Amsterdam... Better vibe, traffic, way of life... or something... We know it's just an opinion, but we thought we should see what there is to see in Haarlem.
We spent the day walking around the city center, visiting candy stores, eating amazing sandwiches, exploring the gorgeous St. Bavo Church and then touring through THE OLDEST MUSEUM in The Netherlands! How cool is that?!
Big shoutout to het Dropje van Haarlem for the kind invite and warm welcome. Be sure to stop by for sweet treats and (very) salty drop (licorice) if you are in Haarlem!

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.
We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!
My brother and I visited Haarlem in December of 2023, while we were staying in Amsterdam. We just wanted to venture outside the capital and see more of what The Netherlands had to offer. Haarlem was so peaceful and gorgeous. The two of us visited The Teylers Museum and St.- Bavokerk. Both places were practically empty when we visited which only enhanced the experiences for the two of us. We were able to explore virtually everything at both locations. We also did a lot of walking and just really enjoyed the sights and sounds of the town. Very cool place and I'm so glad we went. Great video and channel guys! I just subscribed.
It is a really great place!
Thanks for the kind words and the sub is much appreciated!
Go back to Haarlem on 12 en 13 April! On the 12th the bloemencorso bollenstreek will roll into Haarlem in the evening coming from 'De Bollenstreek' and on 13 April you can watch the beautiful designs during the morning and afternoon! It's a sort of start/celebration of Dutch spring!
Excellent timing! My girlfriend and I were supposed to go to Haarlem last weekend, but we had to postpone due to a sudden case of the flu. Now we can use your recommendations for when we do go. Thanks for sharing
Awesome! We really just scratched the surface here. Tons of good food and fun cafes! Hope you have a great visit!
FYI: Hendrik Lorentz, mentor of Einstein had his offices in the Teyler Museum. Einstein visited him a couple of times and was also present at his science father’s funeral in Haarlem that started at the Teylers museum. (Video can be found on YT)
Lorentz was a Nobel award winning scientist for physics and was the creator of the theorie that light had a maximum velocity. His theories stood on the basis of the Special relativity theory by Einstein. Einstein considered him to be like a father to him, and highly regarded his knowledge and expertise.
The locks on the Afsluitdijk (noord Holland side) are called after Lorentz. He is far too unknown outside the scientific field, he should be a household name like Einstein.
That’s great info! Thanks for sharing! ❤️

@@floris-janvandermeulen8054 Aangepast, bedankt!
I love the jazz in your video. Also I now realise Haarlem will definitely be my next destination when I‘m back in the Netherlands.
Thanks! We laugh when we are visiting somewhere and street musicians or a speaker is playing jazz… we think… THANKS FOR THE LIVE SOUNDTRACK! 🙃
The American Harlem was named after the Dutch Haarlem, when the Dutch settled there for the first time.
…and New Amsterdam! ❤️✌️👋🇳🇱🇺🇸
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld ... and Brooklyn, and Bed-Stuy (or at least Stuy)
And wallstreet had an actual wall.
To be taught about your own country by a pair of expats: very humbling and useful at the same time. Like the relaxed, jazzy presentation style. Keep it up!
We are having fun exploring and learning! Glad you enjoy! ✌️
Harlem in NYC is named after this Haarlem. That feels a bit like coming home.
😎
The statue on the big market is the inventor of the bookpress
Let's say an innovater. We're not the British, we correct things when we find out a foreigner beat us to it.
Hi Dutchie here, just subscribed and already a fan. Keep it up the Good Work!
Much appreciated!!!
Awesome video! And I must say, as a Haarlemmer, this city is pretty much perfect. The national park & the beach are close by. But so are the city centre & Amsterdam.
Totally agree! It’s a great place for sure! Thanks for the kind words!
good Video again, liked it very much, greatings from Limburg
❤️❤️❤️
Great video guys 👍❤️ love it. Certainly i watch it more times.
Thanks Martin! ❤️✌️
I like Haarlem much better than Amsterdam (I say as an Amsterdammer). My wife was born there, my daughter now lives there with her boyfriend (a real Haarlemmer). I worked in the center of Haarlem for 10 years at the courthouse in the Jansstraat. You get to know all the pubs and nice restaurants. Just a very nice and cozy city.
That’s our take too… the coziness is the draw for us!
Thank you for taking us to Harlem. I really want some of that drop💟
Have youse two not been to De Koepel yet? It’s one of the best things about Haarlem. It’s a former prison which has been transformed into an enormous function room facility with a cinema complex as its centerpiece! You need to do a special video on that, trust me.
No! We will look into that! Sounds very cool. Much appreciated!
11:17 - for beer buffs and Dutch context. Look at the glass as Katrina sips beer. Each sip leaves a rim of foam around in the glass' wall indicating the previous top level. These rims tell two things: (a) the beer is (still) fresh, and (b) the glass is clean (cleaned with detergent appropriate to beer). Foam that collapses too fast, and no rims, are really telling bad signs.
This is why the Dutch tradition is to serve beer with, depending on the glass' shape, a layer of foam with the height of the width of two fingers. Here the glass is rather wide and the layer would generally be thinner, as in the video. If you serve beer at home, make sure to have detergent for beer glasses. And, yes, beer from bottles should leave these rings too. If not, whatever the best before date says, it's past best before.
This is good information! ✌️
Great vlog!
Thanks so much!
You people are goofy, lovin it. I’m a dutchie hermit, so I live vicariously through your travels 🤪 Getting to know my country. It’s quite nice, must say. Anyhoe, cheers❣️
Ha, I think you get us! We appreciate you watching!
nice to watch, i was born and raised in Haarlem.
Inside that church, the Bavo church, there's a very, very nice very large pipe organ. Both Händel and a 10 year old Mozart played it.
Yeah, we saw the plaques commemorating this! Such a cool organ!
nice video again, did you buy your muts in gemany on the crismass market? i got the same one:)
No… somewhere online I think. Thanks for watching the video! ❤️✌️
Health food channel 🤣😂 Another great city tour, YAY! Keep them coming.
😆 Thanks so much!
What you missed at 12.44 is the image of Lourens Coster who invented the printing press.
That’s very cool!
That prosciutto sandwich is the best sandwich I've ever seen.
I am sitting here dreaming about that bread…
Do you have been at the railway station? In my opinion the most beautiful station in NL!
We totally missed it.. Even after many told us to go when we said we thought Groningen had the most beautiful. 🤦♂️
We will be back!!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld In the station scenes of the movie Oceans 12 with George Clooney were recorded. PS. The outside of the station is maybe less spectacular as Groningen, but the platforms are the best!
That church brewery was cute & cool!!! 😁😁😁
Nice place, for sure!
My boyfriend and I went to that brewery last summer! It was nice!
I like books, I am an avid reader, but I also enjoy nice craft beers, so I am definitely checking this church when I go visit Haarlem, I really liked the church turned into a library in Zwolle (visited in 2023) 😁
Agreed!
Everything is better than Amdterdam😅
💯
Get a life, Calimero.
It is one option. The other options are Het Gooi (hilversum, Naarden, Bussem, Putten) or Utrecht.
Ammonium chloride can hit pretty hard. For the inexperienced.
Truth!
For me, everything is better than Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Utrecht. I was born in Utrecht but, when I was 7 years old, we moved to a small village (population 16,000) in the eastern part of the country, between the river IJssel and the natural reserve De Veluwe, at a 20-minute drive from the German border. I guess "better" depends on your lifestyle.
Absolutely! We have had some great times out and away from the Randstad!
I would prefer Haarlem above Amsterdam to live in. But never a dull moment in Amsterdam that's for sure 😉Are there still places left in The Netherlands you haven't visited yet 😄?
We have quite a list!
We have at least one vlog from each province… except Zeeland… so that will happen soon!
More islands… Deventer… Arnhem…. Eindhoven… Urk… you know… all the places. 🙃
@@nateandkatrinadotheworldArnhem is great if you haven't been. Njimegen is close by there and is fantastic as well. Great videos!
nice video
🙏 🙂
Amersfoort is a nice place for a day visit.
Agreed!

"a salt in my face"
I see what you did there😉
😆
To be berried in church you have to be very rich. The Dutch saying: "stinkend rijk" (stinking rich) comes from the rich people that where berried under the church floor.
That is really interesting! We say the same in English… now we know where it came from!
You're in the OG Haarlem.
Haarlem is a real local Dutch city, like Amsterdam was before mass tourism
The problem with Amsterdam is that it does have some amazing neighbourhoods, like along the Amstel river, the Rivierenbuurt, Oud-Zuid and Oud-West in the Vondelpark area. But if you are looking for that traditional Dutch old town feeling, its all just tourist central. I mean, I lived in Amsterdam for 30 years, mostly in de Pijp neighbourhood which is great, but i cant imagine what a nightmare the old town must be. Loud, overcrowded, trash everywhere after the weekend, lots of overpriced tourist trap scammy places... So yeah, if you are really looking to live in a traditional Dutch old town Haarlem, Leiden, Utrecht, Delft and many others are way better than Amsterdam for that. And thats besides cost of living and rent even, which are obviously higher in Amsterdam too.
Ha! That's what you get for click-baiting us into watching this video! But seriously, stop it, fellow-Dutchies, we know now that no-one in the country likes Amsterdam!
Oh, and you probably won't be coming to my hometown again in the near future (since you want to see many other cities in the Netherlands, let alone all countries in Europe!), but if you do, there is also a St. Bavo Cathedral (not to be confused with the Great or St. Bavo Church in this video) worth visiting.
Nice tip! (Sorry about the click bait… ;-) )
Haarlem is a beautiful old city. I'm not exactly sure but I believe it once was the capital of the Netherlands. It's older than Amsterdam... Amsterdam is the official "capital" now, but seen from an informed Dutch perspective, Amsterdam has nothing to do with the Netherlands. It's more like a city state with their own laws and politics.
Many people say this! Thanks for watching!
It is, I was born in Haarlem, there is enough to see just do your best !!!! for instance ‘’Klein Heiligland’’. Salut de Gwada, Wouter.
We love it there… thanks for the suggestions, we are adding them to our notes!
it's even better then Harlem
Fair. ;-)
Goh, kunnen niet meer normaal over straat
Better as Amsterdam is a low bar... and I am from Amsterdam, Amsterdam is a tourist hell hole.
As a fellow resident of Amsterdam it gets pretty tiring to hear. Yes there are tourist traps and places that get crowded but there are also a lot of amazing places all over the city.
@@PaulTheTurkish-ny1wc Where? the Center is totally tourist infested, east and west are ghetto's, full of gangs hanging on the streets, south is boring and North is .... I don't even know how to call that... not Amsterdam.
There are places we really love. Beatrix Park, De Pijp, even areas in the center… we tend to avoid weekends down in the middle… gets too busy, but Amsterdam has a beautiful side to it.
The old center of Amsterdam has actually been ruined by far too many tourists.
Gratis video abortus haarlem love your videos❤❤
Is there a typo here? Thanks! 🙏

So did you meet Sky already? [ruclips.net/video/-_sXy3kWHkU/видео.htmlfeature=shared]
No! We somehow missed his channel! Will check it out.
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld It would have been fascinating (and hilarious) if you would have bumped into Sky. He works in Amsterdam but really prefers Haarlem to live in. His vlogs have a unique, very positive vibe. Just sayin’, super sayan!😊
It's not better, it's different
That’s where we landed.
Everything in the Netherlands is better than Amsterdam. Too bad de the most the people think that the Netherlands IS Amsterdam.. No: Holland maybe is Amsterdam. But the Netherlands is the whole country!!
OMG every time you say Harlem to my city of birth it hurts. And that's 2 seconds in. Now I have to be masochist for more than 23 minutes. Can you see why I call social media "SM"?
Let's see how you fare in terms of storytelling. I would have volunteered to suggest stories and places with these. I don't think Haarlem is better than Amsterdam that has more stories, being bigger (and younger), but some of the remarkable ones are always omitted. Of course, about 20 minutes has a limit. Now back to the video.
Thanks for the interaction, but you don’t HAVE to watch…. We would hate to see you hurt yourself! 🤪
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld - believe me, you will not SEE it.
If you want to do another Haarlem video, check with me to discuss stories. I love your videography, by the way and no, I don't want to be in them nor be referenced. It's entertaining.
Iedere stad is beter dan Amsterdam behalve stilburg
No offence, but every other city is better than Amsterdam😅as a Dutchie Amsterdam isn't that great anymore... its become a city focused on entertaining tourists and not a nice place to live in, it's too crowded, too expensive, too fake.
The answer you'll get from every random Dutchman when you ask what's better than Amsterdam: 'Every other town'
Seems to be the case!
Amsterdam is so overated
