I'm currently in Haarlem myself, visiting my partner's family, she has not been back in 35 years! But we had a great putting in Zandvoort, made it to Amsterdam, Delft, Den Haag, and Hoek van Holland on public transit. As a Canadian , we had to adjust to the traffic as well. What an awesome country to visit through public transit!
It's great to see how you are doing exactly the same things I am advising people from abroad visiting this country. Go to an Albert Heijn to get a sandwich (and free coffee!) and a beer, take a train to Haarlem if you actually want to enjoy a Dutch city like the Dutch do, get on a bicycle and start exploring. And I just loved to see you enjoying a "broodje haring" and a portion of "kibbeling". Sorry for the rain, we've had the wettest weather in recorded history but then again, you took it like the Dutch, just wear a good coat and go about your business. This is probably why someone asked you directions, you were blending in perfectly with the locals. Well done.
The Netherlands is amongst the most relaxed and layed-back countries I know. Leiden is probably my favourite medium sized town, especially its outdoor market. Den Haag is great too. There's a chain of bookstores where one may buy both new and used books - lots in English. After reading a used book, it may be returned to the shop and you'll receive the price you paid, less €1.00. Enjoy your Dutch break.
Great to see you finally made it to The Netherlands. Good choice to pick Haarlem. It’s as beautiful as Amsterdam but less touristy so it’s more “real” Dutch 🙂
I was born and raised in Haarlem, still living quite nearby. Thank you for showing me 'my world' through different eyes, it makes me appreciate again what I have been taking for granted for long.
i am English and i love the Netherlands, from sitting upstairs on a double-decker train to sitting in a cafe and watching the world go by. Amsterdam is a small city in a u shape if you were to follow a gracht (canal ) you would come back to the central station unless it is the Amstel River. Dutch is not an easy language to learn good luck having a go at speaking some. Dag
9:11 Kibbeling is a Dutch snack consisting of battered chunks of fish, commonly served with a mayonnaise-based garlic sauce or tartar sauce. In the twentieth century, it denoted the salted waste (the cheeks) of the cod fish, which was an important part of the popular diet.
When I go to the fishmonger at the local market (Eindhoven), the default offered sauce is rfemoulade. That is a mayo and mustard based sauce that may include garlic also. But then garlic is hard to evade as almost everything includes garlic.

Welcome to the Netherlands. A few tips/warnings while filming: 1, You are not allowed to have your phone in your hand while bycicling. The fine is €159. Usually police are a bit more understanding with toerists but not always. 2, Filming in public is a bit of a double thing in netherlands. Officially filming in public without permit is only allowed if no other people are recognisable in your images or if it is a crowd of more than 8 people with no people being specifically recognisable or standing out. Usually most people won't mind if you are just filming yourself, but if you want to film someone else or a company it's best to ask premission. (the shots you did of the coffee and sandwich are generally okay, as long as the rest of the business or people working there are not obvious in the image). I've not really heard much of vloggers getting into trouble, but it is a thing to keep in the back of your mind, cause not everyone wants to be filmed and privacy is legally quite protected in the netherlands. Great judgement on the boat situation because indeed that is someone's private property and people generally really don't like toerists just randomly sitting in it. I love seeing how respectful you are and how you are enjoying the netherlands. I hope you have a wonderful trip. P.s. for the weather you can try to use the website buienradar(.nl), it shows you the expected rain and/or thunder clouds for the coming day and is quite easy to use even if you don't understand dutch.
For bike videos the best way is a neck-strap. For example mine are made that way the body helps in keeping it smooth (compared to on the bike) and you have your hands free. For audio best to put a small mic in the back of your head for non talking video so the wind noise is lower.
@@additional__details True, thats why i was talking about privacy laws. Another thing to take into account is portret recht. (No idea what the english term is). These laws are still a thing even in public places and for company names and such branding and pantent rights are a thing. I don't know the fine details of these laws, i just remember what my teachers at uni during media studies used to tell us, and a few of my own experiences during assignments. Most people won't make an issue of it but it sometimes just takes one person to make a mess, so being prepared/aware helps.
@@SkylerRaven You're fighting a war that is already lost. Privacy is dead and has been for a long while. Granted in NL and e.g. Germany they are still trying to keep it alive but it has eroded so much that its unstoppable at this point.

Dear Joel, I hope you have a lot of fun in the Netherlands and Europe. That`s the great thing about cycling in Northern Europe, you can enjoy nature and relax. Personally, I also really love cycling. Kind regards to our Dutch lovely neighbors from East Frisia.
I am only 2:34 minutes in and I am loving it!! At about 9:00 you ate raw herring on a bun. I prefer it just sliced with unions, pickles and no bun. Only after you have enough drinks for the herring to swim, I frefer the bun too 🙂 Next you ate kibbeling. If this was good, then you probably had 'kabeljouw' (cod). If you did not have kabeljouw, it still can be better. Next time ask for 'kibbeling van (from) kabeljouw (cod). They will probably understand english too 🙂 At about 16:00 minutes you were at the beach in Zandvoort. At this time in the year, it can be (over-)crowded. Now it was almost empty 🙂 You have forgotten to visit the 'strandpaviljoens'. They are like small bars/café 's at the beach. Biggest difference? The clothing of the people visiting 🙂 Where are/were you staying? Amsterdam? The cities around Amsterdam are much cheaper (speaking as a real Dutchman). Have a good time!
Wow....soo nice to see my city from your view. We live south of Haarlem, but used to live in the north of Haarlem. Als the road to Zandvoort. All so nice to see this. ❤
What a fantastic introduction to you 2024 trip Joel, a really interesting look at your first Netherlands experience. The herring sandwich reminded me of your trip to Oban last year when you had the mussels on the pier, the herring sandwich looked a whole lot more appetising. 👍👍. It looks like you've hit the ground running with Haarlem and Amsterdam, they both sound like places that really strike a chord with you. Also like your cupboard/room😆 that said it looked clean and tidy. I'm also a fan of the coffee shop, they're great places for kicking back and relaxing, plus for you they are great places for people watching and a good way of picking up the basics of the local language and speech rhythms. Really looking forward to the Further Adventures of Joel Abroad ! 👍👍😃😃
When will you visit The Hague? A lot of visible ánd hidden treasures! Happy tombe your guide because many people don’t know how much the city has to offer 😊
I live in the Netherlands and watching this video really makes me want to visit the US. Just to see all the differences. American city's looks so cool to me
That big cathedral in Haarlem existed well before Columbus discovered America and two centuries before the Dutch settled Harlem in New York (then New Amsterdam).
Columbus dident discover America. The Vikings visited North America, and if they did not “discover” America in the strict sense of the word, they certainly got there before Columbus did.
Paprika flavored chips were my favorite growing up in Belgium. In North America, bbq is the closest but not the same. You should be able to recycle cans and bottles in many supermarkets and get a bit of money back.
Welcome to the Netherlands MoreJps! Hope you enjoy your stay here. I can recommend Utrecht and Groningen (a bit further north, ~2hrs by train). Have a great time!!
@MoreJps Remember to try the fresh baked bread without anything else added, you will be shocked by the difference to the bread in the US.... Over there, you have so much added sugar in your bread that it feels like cake.
You were the perfect tourist! Not staying just in Amsterdam, not doing the obvious tourist things and experiencing everything yourself. I'm so proud of you. 😉
I didn't know you were coming to meet the Dutch. Absolutely fantastic! If you need anything, let us know. I'm 100% certain that there are more than enough of us who are willing help. For how long do you stay?
@@viderethevaccinatorfromhol7536I think he didn't announce his visit because all his viewers would want to meet up and impose themselves without meaning to.
If you don't know if the car has to stop look for the "shark teeth". The row of triangles on the road. If the tip of the triangle is facing towards the car they have to stop. If it's facing towards you, you have to yield.
This typically does not apply to pedestrians because there is a general rule that pedestrians don't have to know the rules of the road when it comes to traffic signs (shark teeth typically are accompanied by a yield sign as well) because they are not considered drivers or people in control of a vehicle. In cases of crossings where there is also a cycle path the shark teeth are typically in front of the zebra crossing or cycle path (depending on which one comes first) to indicate that should traffic lights be out, the road markings take priority, of if there are no traffic lights, that's the behavior expected of drivers.

When travelling I go to Cafés a lot! :D I love to just sit there for two hours, drink hot chocolate or tea, drink some water, relax, read, watch the people and pets walking by, charge my phone... It's the most relaxing way of travelling - long slow walks through the nice areas and from time to time stop to sit down and eat or drink.

What a great vlog and how nice you visited my hometown Haarlem. You are so talented in describing your trip and I am really proud of you biking through that rain and wind. You are such a friendly personality, and I really like how you explain the differences. I’m really touched by your friendliness and openness. You even tried herring! You have been unlucky with the weather, this autumn was so bad, so much rain and cold temperatures. It can be quite a bit nicer when it’s not raining. I really enjoyed your vlog and it feels so familiar to me as I recognised all of the footage. As a matter of fact, I made the same bike trip to Zandvoort from Haarlem the other day through the dunes to relax the mind. I understand your confusion about food. I’ve been to United States twice and for me the portion size is so big and the variety of chips or cereal in the US is just mind blowing to me 😅 I really fell in love with New York and New Yorkers, although I know the US is much bigger than just NY, so that’s why I want to see more of your country in the near future.
So nice to see Amsterdam (where I live) and Haarlem (were I grew up) through the eyes of some body who visits for the first time. By bike you really experience the environment so you did well!
Welcome to the Netherlands 🇳🇱. You've made it. Experience this great small country. Don't hesitate to ask people anything. Most will answer you. Enjoy 👍
Hey JP, back in Europe again. I hope you’ll have a great time. Here in southwestern Germany we’d like to get some of this rain, it’s been rather hot and swampy here. Expect to get thirsty after eating “raw herring”, because it’s cured in a salty brine … I worked up an appetite just seeing all that lovely fish displayed. You do have the right of way on pedestrian crossings with the zebra stripes.
I really like the pickled herrings, in the Uk we just get rollmop but when i was in Denmark they had a whole range of different pickled herrings. Never actually been to the Netherlands , not sure why, would like to and maybe if i go it would be out of season and try not upset the locals so much by being part of mass tourism. hope you enjoyed your time there.

At a fish stand mostly cod since you pay alot of money, if it is whitefish it should be very cheap.
@@ShreddingSwords kibbeling is cod, pollack, hake, whiting or coalfish.
@@piepkwiep4312 Real cod kibbeling is hard to get, unless you make it yourself.
@@ShreddingSwords I disagree, it's usually Hake, but they charge you the same.
@@maartenkos98 idk where you buy your kibbeling but where I go it's cod, yes I also eat cod when it's not kibbeling so I know when I have cod in my kibbeling.
Blimey! Good lad. I am impressed with you & your travelling. All credit to you.
There's a special vibe in your vlog videos, heartwarming , chilling, I just lay in my bed and I could watch them for hours
It's almost emotional to see your eyes open to the conveniences a society like the Dutch one offers when it comes to quality of life.
Dutch baseline = amazing quality of life
@@MoreJpsIt ain't much if it ain't Dutch!
Well done.
Welcome to the Netherlands! Have fun!
😊. Hope you enjoyed your stay in the Netherlands, and our Belgian beers 😂. 🤘❤️
i am English and i love the Netherlands, from sitting upstairs on a double-decker train to sitting in a cafe and watching the world go by. Amsterdam is a small city in a u shape if you were to follow a gracht (canal ) you would come back to the central station unless it is the Amstel River. Dutch is not an easy language to learn good luck having a go at speaking some. Dag
Your efforts are much appreciated.❤ Dutch people usually immediatly assume it is too difficult for people and switch to English.
You are fantastic! Its a great pleasure looking you videos! As a Austrian, lived for 25 years in Munich and visited the Netherlands it's so much fun to see you are happy. Here in Europe! Ron 🥳
You look so well. Great to see you on another European trip. Enjoy 😊
Weird to think I've been watching your vids for years, and now you are only about 14 kms away from me here in Westzaan ! Have a great time here in NL !
Welkom in Nederland! Veel plezier!
Great video dude, I myself live and work in the Amsterdam-Haarlem aria. Born and raised here.
Always nice to see someone's having a good time.
We often don't see it anymore, because it's so genuine, now i see it,s quite special.
Thnx and have a nice time in The Netherlands.
Welcome to Europe Joel❤
You’re so sweet being amazed by almost everything😊 If you have the time, please swing by Denmark and experience the danish way of living. It’s such a treat. You have to have been here to know what I’m talking about😊 We are a lot like the Netherlands when it comes to biking and the laid back way of living. We’re also Vikings, but we’re very peaceful nowadays so you’re good😂

Welcome to the Netherlands.
A few tips/warnings while filming:
1, You are not allowed to have your phone in your hand while bycicling.
There is no law against filming in public in the Netherlands. Ik zeg het maar even / Just saying.
@@additional__detailsBut there is a law prohibiting publication, unless it is journalism.

Lovely to see. I’ve only been to Amsterdam once, many years ago. Tho getting back to the Netherlands someday to explore and visit friends, is definitely on my bucket list. Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰 ❤
Dear Joel, I hope you have a lot of fun in the Netherlands and Europe. That`s the great thing about cycling in Northern Europe, you can enjoy nature and relax. Personally, I also really love cycling. Kind regards to our Dutch lovely neighbors from East Frisia.
I love the positive vibe of your content. Welcome to our country and enjoy ❤
They will probably understand english too 🙂
At about 16:00 minutes you were at the beach in Zandvoort. At this time in the year, it can be (over-)crowded. Now it was almost empty 🙂 You have forgotten to visit the 'strandpaviljoens'. They are like small bars/café 's at the beach. Biggest difference? The clothing of the people visiting 🙂
Where are/were you staying? Amsterdam? The cities around Amsterdam are much cheaper (speaking as a real Dutchman). Have a good time!
Good to see you back this side of the pond. Really looking forward to your upcoming vlogs 😊
Wow....soo nice to see my city from your view. We live south of Haarlem, but used to live in the north of Haarlem. Als the road to Zandvoort. All so nice to see this. ❤
Welcome to The Netherlands! So much fun to see you've made it. I hope you have a great time!
So cool to see you in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 😀 I`m happy for you 😊
Enjoy your time and I can't wait for the next video 🤗

I live in the Netherlands and watching this video really makes me want to visit the US. Just to see all the differences. American city's looks so cool to me
Gezellig to have you here, enjoy!
@@ankra12
According to that logic, no one ever discovered anything.
@@mariatheresavonhabsburg What logic is that?

Finally a positive vlog from an American about our country. Glad to see you enjoying other places than just Amsterdam.
Love to see that you like it. Have fun, and visit Utrecht also.
Preferbly from a bakery!

Hey JP, been watching your videos for a while now. Great to follow your travels and observe your new experiences. Lots of love from Australia.
This isn´t from today because its´ very warm in the Netherlands there was no rain the last two weeks , and Zanvoort today was so crowded , but the video is great , you actually came i never thought you would 😘

Great you are visiting my city, have been following your vids for some time. Have fun.
I love the Netherlands. Beautiful old towns, rich cultural heritage, awesome transportation solutions (the bike garages !), great universities and other research institutions, keeping up with the 21st century when it comes to technology and digitization of public services, pragmatic, open-minded, friendly. Shout out from Germany (which could learn a lot from their neighbors)!

Here in southwestern Germany we’d like to get some of this rain, it’s been rather hot and swampy here.
Expect to get thirsty after eating “raw herring”, because it’s cured in a salty brine …
I worked up an appetite just seeing all that lovely fish displayed.
