  • A "day in the life" of the Beatles. On this day the Beatles recorded "No Reply" along with a few other songs. This video is an educational/historic record of that day in time. You can see what the Beatles looked like, the clothes they wore, and the instruments they played while making this recording. A remarkable historical document in time.

@@fitless John was a very talented storyteller until he started dropping acid. Another great song from this early period is "I Don't Want to Spoil The Party." His mention of "I've had a drink or two and I don't care; it's no fun in what I do if she's not there" was one of the first plainly said references to having had a couple of belts. The whole song is the narrative of John's mind while missing his girlfriend at a party. EVERY guy who heard it related to it automatically. John won a lot of fans in this period that stayed with him all the way.

The drums, and cymbal crashes the suspenseful guitar, the piano and the clap track make this song a musical wonder. I love how the smothered cymbal crashes add to the dynamics of the song. I love the choppy rhythm or counter-rhythm or what it is, also some pretty weird chords - sort of jazzy, as if there is some Bossa Nova hidden deep within it. But then again, it’s very British... John’s raspy voice as if he had too much to drink is also something. I find it impossible to do it honor with my guitar playing and singing, so I always blame it on the missing handclaps...

I agree with your Helter Skelter praise but in that exact same album John Lennon performs I'm so Tired and Yer Blues, McCartney did not have the pure power of Lennon that is indisputable.

The sound of John's double-tracked vocal, the power of his Gibson J-160E, the addition of George Martin's piano in the bridge, Ringo's Inspired syncopated snare hits in the verse, and of course the sheer majesty of the bridge, aided & abetted by Paul's soaring harmony. Tomorrow revisiting the childhood homes of John and Paul on a National Trust tour. Will see what interesting vibes I pick up this time. All highly recommended. A lot of people never even mention Beatles '65, but it is a fantastic album. Also, while McCartney's brilliance and prolificness as a musician and writer is never in doubt, it seems like Lennon's edgiest, most passionate efforts really stand out as something extra special. The chord progression in the refrain of "No Reply" is recycled in Now and Then

Most of the Beatles music was written by John and Paul. However, the lead singer was usually the main writer on the song. You can hear John's voice singing the verse in this song, and this song was mainly written by John. During a 1980 interview, John made a point that despite the fact the official writers of these songs were John and Paul, he differentiated the styles of John and Paul and indicated it was pretty easy to tell them apart.
    I agree.
But I have to wonder, if Paul came up with the notes on the "No Reply" chorus in this song, which both Paul and John were singing. This part really made the song, my favorite on the "Beatles 65" Album.

I've listened to this song many times over the years and never really payed much attention to what he's really saying. If you think about it, he's stalking this girl in an extremely dark and creepy sort of way. In run for your life he's basically saying he'll kill her if she ever talks to another guy. Norwegian wood is basically a happy little song about a guy who burns a woman's house down because she didn't have sex with him. At least that's what I get from it.

Here John AND Paul are singing verse in unison, Paul also mimicking the John's voice timbre

      They're harmonizing where Lennon isn't double-tracked.

Why does it say “in the recording studio”? It’s just the album track.

The photos that accompany the video are from the recording of this song, on this particular date. I could have used the Anthology version of takes 1 and take 2, but the final finished version (to me) was too beautiful not to use.

Hi, I never said it was a BBC recording. It's a track from the Beatles For Sale LP.
      So yes parlophone.
