An accelerator problem and a brake problem at the same time are very unlikely. He was obviously able to stop the car after plowing through all of those people. So, is he claiming that the brakes suddenly worked again, which would be very unlikely. Even if there was a mechanical issue, what’s his excuse for going down the road in the wrong direction?

Korean law is very flawed in comparison to the West, “United States.” I’ve been to Korea several times and I have experienced times where drivers where reckless. As a pedestrian, you are required to yield the right way to vehicles or risk injury. Also I’ve ridden on buses where people were injured as a result of the driver’s actions.

Even if it's a sudden acceleration, he still has a full control of the steering wheel unless the steering got "stucked" too. So why did he choose to steer where those poor victims at?? He could've have crash it on the place where there's no people since on the CCTV he definitely passed by some empty parts with guardrails. Also why did his car got to a sudden stopped after hitting those poor pedestrians & the 2 cars? If the break was broken it wouldn't abruptly stopped unless it crashes to something solid like tree or a wall. Lastly, he has a 40 yrs driving experience, he definitely has knowledge on what to do when encountering a "sudden acceleration" situation. Anyways, RIP to 9 victims, get well soon to those critically injured & hope they will get their fair justice.

Why not just turn the ignition off? When I was a new driver this similar thing happened to me. Fortunately, I was able to get the car off the road and into an empty lot of dirt. When the cop asked what happened and I told him, he asked why didn’t you just turn the ignition off? I would still be able to steer though it would have been without power steering. I look back on that day, and it now seems so simple. RIP to the victims. I truly hope this isn’t a case of someone with money and or power trying to get out of their actions.

unfortunately it is Korea, there are pedestrians EVERYWHERE. It's hard to say where it was specifically to know if there was a less crowded place. There didn't seem to be many big trees he could've hit. The car would've definitely plowed through guardrails if they are only drilled into the cement.
Only investigation of the blackbox would be able to tell what would happen here :(

Cars are so dangerous and human error (if that’s what happened) is a reality. I know here there have been instances over the years of people (especially elderly people) accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brakes. The idea the car could have accelerated on its own is even scarier. I hope the police can determine what happened.

Stuck accelerator does happen in rare occasions, applying the break does little to stop the vehicle, it’s incredibly scary situation for the driver. I think the driver panicked and tried best to avoid vehicles and people but ultimately it ended in tragedy. It more than likely a mechanical failure due to the age of the vehicle. Not sure why the Korean government targeting older driver because of this situation. Let’s face it, the worst drivers are usually teenagers who don’t have driving experience. That’s why teenagers drivers has to pay higher insurance premiums than any other age group, the data don’t lie.

@@ndychung007 That is a good point but cars still breaks down even after a recent inspection. Also, these inspections are general and not done throughly, mechanics only take short time to check the vehicle, usually they only notice that are physically damaged. @@ndychung007 From what I saw in the news and video, the vehicle in question became out of control almost as soon as the vehicle was in motion. When you’re in a out-of-control vehicle at maximum speed, you only have split seconds to determine the course of direction. You don’t have time to determine if the street is one way or not, especially at night and in a mega city like Seoul with so many intersecting streets. Also, the vehicle came to a Rolling stop after the accident, the impact of the accident caused the vehicle to stop and not because the brake was applied. I think most people in Korea are rushing to judgment and very eager to condemn the driver, much like a lynch mob. Imagine you are in a vehicle traveling at 100mph and there is no way for you to stop, can you imagine the absolute fear and desperation the driver felt, can you really say you can do it better? If so you must have a reflex of a Superman.

@@JojoJoget Or maybe the vehicle was malfunctioning and you just don’t want to believe it for whatever reason. When a out-of-control vehicle is traveling at maximum speed at night with so many people and intersecting street, it’s impossible to avoid the accident, or maybe if you have a Superman reflex. Let the police do their investigation, so many people died, it’s important to find the true cause of the accident and not prejudge.

And, in here, we hear that they had their testimony lined up to say that it was sudden acceleration and that the brakes didn't work...I hope the prosecutors go for murder instead of involuntary manslaughter. Unless the angle is that the driver wanted to accelerate and end it all with his wife and he didn’t think it through and "accidentally" also took 9 lives. Something juat doesn't sound right. It's giving premeditated and reminds me of a case in Canada where a guy rented a car just to plow into as many people as he could for incel reasons.
