Wasn't in ww1, not in a trench , but I was an 18 year old in Vietnam in a fighting hole enduring a north Vietnamese 122mm rocket attack . I wish I had heard this song . it would have been a great comfort .

Could you imagine being 19 years old, sitting in a dank dark trench with death around you, listening to this tune in the trenches?

    • @zupan1758
      @zupan1758 7 лет назад +13

Seriously, that's one of my biggest dreams. Today I'm sitting in front of computer and I do absolutely nothing - next generations will forget me forever... and ww1 soldiers? They were dying in the name of their countries. And we won't forget them. God, please - if I can't go to heaven, send me to Verdun or Somme. I will do my best...

@@briquetaverne I went to France two years ago, just to see Verdun, Argonne, Vauquois and other WW1-related cities around. I know what I wish for - though I know it is absolutely impossible and I will never be able to understand what Hell is. But if I were told to replace an innocent soldier and die for him in the trenches, I think I could do it. And I don't say this to be, idk, thought of as a hero, I just think that I could do that, moreover, this is just a dream of mine.

    Sometimes when I feel bad
    and things look blue
I wish a girl I had... say one like you.
Someone within my heart to build her throne
Someone who'd never part, to call my own
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We could go on loving in the same old way
A garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy.
No-one I'll ever care for dear... but you.
No-one I'll fancy, therefore love me do.
Your eyes have set me dreaming all night long…
Your eyes have set me scheming, right or wrong
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We could go on loving in the same old way
A garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do

The question is, did Burr record this also as a waltz? The effect is stunning and highly emotionally wrenching on Downton Abbey, most notably when the strings cut in when Mary stops singing... This should never be done in 4/4, as it doesn't work: too bad they probably requested H.B. to sing it this way. Tch. There is also a 20's dance record (waltz) with Scrappy Lambert doing the vocal, very nice indeed. 🐸

The original Upstairs Downstairs, 1970's tv series, the writing and acting of which puts Downton Abbey to shame, brought me here. WWI era England is portrayed so meaningfully and poignantly in Upstairs Downstairs, the original from the 1970's. I like Downton Abbey as well, lavish production, but it truly pales in comparison and was lifted almost whole cloth from this original tv series of the 1970's. Season 4, episode 7 is titled after this romantic song.
