I love Michelle Dockery's acting: you can feel how Mary wants to run to Matthew to hug him or just be close to him, and she can barely hold back because he is not her fiancé now. I know many people hate Mary, but I think she usually tried to do the right thing. She could have ruined Lavinia, but she respected Matthew's choice and tried to be a good friend, although it was killing her.
No, I could never hate Mary. On the contrary, I actually like her; she’s always true to herself. She doesn’t pretend to be a good person, nor does she let jealousy drive her actions-like writing a letter to ruin her elder sister’s and her family’s reputation just to satisfy her own need for revenge.
@@msrRevId7oh no Mary would never spill the beans about a illegitimate child and ruin her sister and family reputation😱 not Mary, never! 🤣 Both sisters have their moments, both ways. There are people who dislike Mary and dislike Edith and that’s their opinion and their perfectly right to do so and everyone can disagree with each other too….
Love love this scene. You could tell it took every ounce of self control mary had not to run down the aisle and embrace Matthew. Unrequited live at its best. Love Mary and Matthew!
While I love each and every aspect of this sequence, I especially love Robert's 'My dear boy.... My very dear boy' line. The delivery is so brilliant as you can feel the emotion overcoming the restraint/stiff upper lip the character maintains until then. Warms my heart!
crazy! I've seen this show probably 10 times. I have been waking up to it in my mind for two days. Had to come watch the video so it would stop. Love it!
This scene always makes me cry because its just so... perfect. I never got over and never will get over Dan Stevens' departure from the show, Matthew is my favourite character.
I know I shouldn't because it's his life, but I get so mad that Dan Stevens jumped ship to pursue other gigs. Though Mary's grieving arc is pretty good, I think her character could've been much better without her shopping around for husbands for the rest of the show. I enjoyed everything the first time around, but the Anthony/Charles stuff is pretty skippable for men now.
The use of the strings at 1:39 is the most effective, brief use of music to strengthen the emotional impact of a scene I have ever heard. Just heart- rending.
@@sandywaddell4303 I'm not 100% familiar with the Elgar, (don't really hear Elgar in there) but my feeling was always that the composer reached in someplace very deep to get that few dozen measures for the show. What struck me most about this particular scene is that Mary and Edith are civil and even kind to each other, and it perhaps predicts a potential reconciliation.
And with that Ladies and Gentlemen continues the saga of the will they, won't they between Cousin Matthew and Lady Mary. What was so sweet (but not surprising) was when Lady Mary knelt down beside her bed and prayed for his safety.
I rewatched Downton Abbey again and cried with tears of joy for this scene. Now watching the Gilded Age which is okay but Downton Abbey made us fallen in love with its characters. It’s like we are living the world through various emotions and life stages through them. Truly a gem of period series.
its beautiful to see how a show survives actors leaving it - the first 3 seasons with matthew are just beautiful to watch, I thought the show would fall apart after he was killed off, but, although at the beginning of season 4, it feels awful to not have him (or o'brien) in the show, the show survives and that shows how wonderful it truly is - i loved the remaining 3 seasons just as much as the first 3, in a different way --- season 6 stood out to me as a real climax of mary's emotions which all stemmed from seasons prior - the whole thing came full circle... very moving... now i'm rambling, don't know whether what i'm saying makes sense but this show is truly spectacular in every way... so pure, so raw... just marvellous with stunning costume, sets and of course the legendary music..!!

People say that Daisy never actually loved William. The relief and worry she feels for him tells a different story. I think she did love William very much when she married him she just didn’t recognize it because she didn’t know what Love was. Violet was right when she said that to Daisy.
I think everyone loved William. They thought there was a decent chance that he was dead at this point, so naturally all of them would be relieved that he was alive. Daisy says herself that she loved William: the difference being 'not in that way.' Daisy cared for William as a friend: she did what she needed to do in his final moments to make him happy because of that - I think thats what Violet means when she says 'that sounds a great deal like love' - but it was never romantic. And the way the people around her forced her into a position where she had to go as far as to marry him to spare his feelings is not justified to that end. I love Mrs Patmore, and I love most of her relationship with Daisy, but there are moments when you recognise that she's an anchor weighing Daisy down and stopping her reaching her full potential.
Очень сильная сцена! Актриса сыграла её просто идеально, почти не показав очевидных эмоции, нам очень хорошо передала это чувство! Трепетная сцена и игра! Браво!
That was really mean the way Mary basically told everyone in the room that she doesn't like Edith and that they should all savor their one chance to see her treat her like a human being.
I think that the writer wanted this scene to happen, but felt the need to provide an explanation. Otherwise, their going from enmity to musical group wouldn't have made sense.
@@kikilynn1167 Then she could have said in the private conversation (with Cora I think) when she agreed to do the song. But of course, it's Downton Abbey and everything must be broadly telecast.
