- I guess this is click bait-y, but I really did stop wearing perfume. On purpose. For four days. I couldn't go five.
Ahhh, the things I do for science. Well, not really for science; more like for RUclips. Not even that, actually. I stopped wearing perfume for as long as I could stand and here's what I learned...
That’s a great experiment! I actually did a similar thing during the pandemic when I just forgot to wear fragrances. Ironically this was also when I had most time to make videos about fragrances. I remember when I went for one of those pandemic walks and other people's fragrances really hit me. As I am a notorious undersprayer I have never thought about what other people think about my fragrance, but I guess it is noticeable after all., no matter how subtle it is to me. I usually also don’t wear any fragrances on weekends when I don’t leave the house. Sometimes it’s ok to just smell like yourself. In a way fragrances are just part of what I’m wearing and they make the outfit complete. No wonder I have such a big wardrobe. Today I was wearing a shirt with tiny purple, pink and blue flowers and I just had to wear a fragrance that smells purple to me which is Brin de Reglisse by Hermès. It is a very quiet lavender liquorice smell that somehow conserves the last rays of sun on a day in the south of France. It has got that sweet smell of decaying hay that just reminds me of my days when I jumped around in stacks of hay and the castles we had built using the blocks of hay. Ahhhh, I love this fragrance (sorry about taking over the comment section; sometimes I miss talking and writing about fragrances 😉).

I remember you talking about jumping around in hay stacks and the castles you used to build. I understand your reasons for taking breaks from writing and speaking about fragrances. I agree. When I’m just in the house. I don’t wear anything. I’m getting to the point now if I’m not going out the house and don’t have a haircut. I don’t wear fragrances. Now I do still smell the atomizer when I miss smelling like a fragrance.
I think being on RUclips and wearing perfume has brought me a different world, and that is precious. I do wish I could spend some real life time with the people I've met though! 🥰

The struggle is so real! 😅 i can go a few days at most without wearing perfume. A week would be torture 😂 I loved hearing your thoughts on how it went. ❤
🎶La La La!🎶 It was no fun. Honestly. It really did show me how much fragrance means to me. I feel so lucky to be allowed to wear fragrance whenever I want (mostly). It, like YOU, enhances my life immensely! xo
You are so beautiful. “Perfume is one of the greatest joys of my life” is ditto for me. I go few days without wearing perfume but it’s typically because I’m overwhelmed by life for some reason: moving, weekend in, not feeling well, or working on a project. Bravo to you. I’m glad you only lasted 4 days.

I agreed with you when you said perfume is a luxury.This is going to be a huge challenge for me staying without a perfume between I also think it’s going to be a really nice experience. YES! I wake up in the middle of the night most times just to sniff my bottles 😂. Those are the thoughts that plague me, and yet I keep making videos because I love perfume, and I love YOU and our other friends here, and I want communion with you. Hi Julija 😊🌹 yes, yes and yes…🙌💯I’ve tried this well and noticed things when I’m sick or not wearing anything, not even a lotion. Totally agree with you! Same experience. And just like you, I don’t want to live scentless. Granted, even though I overspray my perfume, I usually don’t wear more one , sometimes two in a day, but still I want to smell like perfume all the time.😍🥰

Deliciously ridiculous is 100% what they are. I WAS brave, and now I have a LOT of catching up to do. Luckily, I have some perfume angels in my life who make sure that I have more samples than I could ever get through in a life time, and so I"m going to give it my all. How in the HECK have I never heard about the liquid heaven called Passeggiata???!!! I need that NOW. Holy. Moly. Thank. You.

Hi Claire! After I filmed that video, I did go out with the friend, and the friend immediately told me that I smell "amazing," and it was, 100%, the bra of many scents. :)

If I happen to go through a day without a perfume on 🥺 I absolutely can’t go to bed without one on !! I love that you did this experiment and 4 days is commendable,I can understand that it would enhance other smells around you !

Hi Frances! Thank you, as always, for your support and friendship! This was a great learning experience for me for sure! I miss wearing them to be bed, but I do think it might help me in the overspraying department. :)
I am very sensitive to scents and I've become accustomed to it now so I don't want to lose that. I am currently obsessed with perfumes but I try not to overspray! I don't wear perfume to bed and I mostly don't wear perfume at home. I also only spray my clothes and more on my outerwear. Not my skin. Other than perfume I try not to have too many other scents at home (cleaning products, dryer sheets, candles, laundry soap, home scented products). I mostly use unscented. So I dont lose my strong nose.

The situation with a person opening the window happens to me one time, years ago. It was during a job interview, and I felt ashamed by it. However I did get the position 😁. Sneezing also happens once with some customers, I was wearing an highly concentrated citrus fragrances, and some people can be allergic to citrus essential oil. Since then, I only wear it very lightly, despite being a freshy. ( Since I tend to overspray freshies 😊). I can go outside without fragrance, I feel naked without it, and the ritual of the selection of my scent of the day can takes a good part of my grooming routine. 😅 But I think I will follow your exemple and try to not wear bed scent, and give my sniffer some rest😉. Another place that you may have already found, that keep your fragrancescent, is your seat belt. I'm always surprised when I catch it. Good luck in your fragrance sabbatical.😘
Hi Amandine! You must have been so relieved when you got that position. I teach a class where interview skills are included, and one of the "skills" for an interview is to never be obviously perfumed. (Ya, like I'd EVER agree with that?! Right?!) I didn't know that about citric essential oils! Thank you for that! I just got a nice cheapie citrus and now I know I shouldn't spray with abandon! I DID feel naked, and my routine was SO off! And you are 100% correct about the seatbelt! I think that my earrings and bra were so strongly scented that the seatbelt took a back seat (pun intended), but I SWEAR I can STILL smell the Oil Perfumery version of BR540 on that sucker from having worn it almost two years ago. I'm so glad that I started this whole perfume thing, because YOU came into my life. xoxoox

Can I say how much I appreciate your channel and content?? I am also an avid perfume collector. I have been collecting perfume for the past 15 years. I have it all and I am very blessed and grateful. I know exactly what you mean when you say it is not about the perfume. For me, perfume tells a story of my life. Do you know? I have a perfume that takes me back to a summer evening, when I was 10 years old, standing in the backyard of my childhood home, next to my mom, helping her pick fresh tomatoes from her garden!! Or I have a perfume that takes me back to walking the streets of Damascus Syria (where I am originally from), in the midst of summer, with jasmine coming at me from all 4 directions! Or I have a perfume that takes me back to the time that I was pregnant with my daughter and I had severe morning sickness and the only scent I could handle was Daisy by Marc Jacobs. So I wore that perfume my entire pregnancy! See what I did? I was able to tell my life story through perfume. Our sense of smell goes directly to the limbic system of our brain, which is responsible for memories and emotions. So I get what you mean. Sometimes, when I am down, I will take a perfume that I wore during my darkest days, smell it, and then realize how far I have come and that makes me feel better. I love how your channel is not about buying and reviewing and linking and making a commission off of perfume! But instead, you focus on the meaning of perfume. You are very intellectual and authentic. Please keep up the good work!
Well, Da Nads, can I just say how much I appreciate this comment?? We could spend HOURS, you and I, talking about the scents that shaped us. For every scenario you share with me in this comment, I have one similar! The ten-year old helping mom, the scent of the street, major life events being scented so as to never, ever smell that fragrance without being transported back there. You DID tell your story in fragrance. What an amazing thing! I'm so glad that you are able now to go back to those smells and feel supported and grounded and well despite the trauma of when you wore them originally. The power of scent is HEALING, just as you say. My channel is a mish-mash of a bunch of stuff, but mostly it's about THIS COMMENT that you've left me - this connection. This sharing. I don't wear perfumes while fasting. Every time i do it I realise how sensitive my nose becomes. That makes me enjoy some lovely scent that usually are categorized as a bad performer. It took me a while to stand my powerful scent again. It's kind of a nose diet if it makes sense 😂😂

What a fun video! I love it. I have gotten compliments on my scent just by showering with Dove soap. I had to quit putting perfume on my skin as a cancer survivor. (perfumes have pthalates -- not a safe chemical). Thanks for sharing your experience.

True story that you can't make up: the other day a waitress brought me the menu at a restaurant and I could smell something familiar on her. I said, "Are you wearing a fragrance?" She replied, "No, but I just put a Halls (cough drop) in my mouth." I was all, like, "Well, it smells great!"

Perfume is such a profound way we express ourselves. I'm doing physical therapy for a shoulder injury and I feel like my therapist hasn't even met me yet (it's been 6 weeks) because I haven't been able to wear fragrance. I look forward to therapy being done so that I can look at my collection and get to choose who I want to be each day.

I totally know what you mean, though, about not having "met" you if you weren't wearing fragrance during your sessions. That’s an amazing experience to try! Perfume is also part of my routine and I even think before bed what I’ll be wearing the next day. 🙈 I try to use non scented hair products and I don’t use GAIN to wash my clothes! 😆 I want my perfume to be the star of the day. Have a great weekend! ☀️
Salut, my friend! I also lay in bed and think about what fragrances I might wear. I've never even CONSIDERED unscented ANYTHING. I'm a huge fan of Gain!!! :) But now that you mention it, I wonder if that might help me notice my own fragrance more and thereby use less of it? Hmmm. Something to think about! Yay for the weekend! It must be getting nice in La Belle Province. Our lake is still frozen, but the ice will probably start to move and break up this weekend. It's been raining like CRAZY and the flooding is out of control! What's next weather-wise??!!

Hi Julija 👋 I commend you for even getting through one day perfume-free! I have zero desire or curiosity to reboot my sense of smell, but funnily enough, I went to the emerg to get prescription renewals (NL has a Dr shortage) and saw my brother-in-law as he works there. When he saw me, he stopped in his tracks and moved back about 4 ft or so, and I knew immediately it was my perfume. I was wearing Orchidee Vanille but being an oversprayer, I guess I assaulted his senses,; that plus the hospital is a scent-free zone. So I unintentionally learned to not go to the hospital wearing perfume, my contribution to the experiment. 🙂
Hey Deb! That's crazy that you have to go to Emerg to get a prescription refilled, but I get it. (THANK YOU TO ALL FRONTLINE WORKERS!!) I think you should rest assured that, in fact, it COULDN'T have been my precious Orchidée Vanille that cause your b-i-l to back off. It simply cannot be. Therefore, I suggest that it was your beauty that caused him to back off lest he betray himself? (I'm an idiot. Don't even read this!) Our hospital is a scent-free zone, too. I go there as infrequently as humanly possible. Good thing I'm healthy as a horse for the most part! Thank you for your contribution not only to this experiment, but to MY JOY! As it happens, I have wondered why my perfemes are getting weaker. For example, if I see in my notes that perfume x lasted 12 h. when I first bought it, now it lasts only 6 h. Instead of spraying 2, I now spray 5 sprays and still it seems too little.😳
I may take on a no-perfume week like you did, and then maybe I'll notice my wallet (empty) and curtains reek of dozen scents.

It's 100% true, though, Helena - we do acclimatize to our fragrances and we do need more and more so that WE can smell them. Other people, though, can smell us JUST FINE. If you do take a week off, please come back and share your results. I would absolutely LOVE to hear about your experience.

I don't think a week will be necessary after all. I've been perfume fasting for two days. Then applied one spray of Bergamask (Orto Parisi, extrait). Can you believe, I could still smell it after 24h😳😶!!
I told about this idea of yours that one might take a break with perfumes in a small Finnish perfume group. Now many fragheads there are enthusiastic about it. They already noticed they didn't smell their favourite scents any more and wondered what the heck was wrong. One lady said she takes a two day break regularly and it works wonders.
So, thank you Julija, your idea was fantastic.
Oh yes, I also noticed I didn't smell cooking ingredients like black pepper and garlic properly. 😶.
That problem has mended too.

@@ScentSiblingsDotCA How funny you are! The driving/ passenger bit is so cute! Well, this season sans “accoutrement” took place about 20 years ago. I felt the Lord ask me to do it. It revealed that I understood intellectually that I am loved unconditionally, but that at my core… in my heart, I had to get very honest about how I saw myself. It was a hard but very meaningful lesson in receiving unconditional love from myself and from others. And this TEXAS girl did not go gently into that good night , let me tell you! I had to really fight Him on this one. I am a make up, big hair, go big or go home kind of girl ! But it was a precious, deep heart lesson that I will never forget! I embrace my girly girl ways, but absolutely know where my worth lies. 🥰

I was thinking at the beginning try a month? I have the same issue yet the grumpy cashier at my market always makes sure to make quite a spectacle of herself when she smells me carrying on as if she’s having some sort of attack?? 😅yet no one else in the market is wearing perfume? Doubtful! 😂 but I do probably wear a bit too much! Especially a new one someone gifted me 😂 💕 I may try this for two weeks !? As I’ve only done this when sick

I’m at the stage now though where I know my favs and I’ve narrowed down to like 6 and I’m new gourmands for ex ( I’m a spicy gal floral or spicy amber gal ) but I’m sticking with my loves and two times a year I will allow myself to try a new gourmand as those scents are new to me! I’m glad you went back to perfume! And loved this blog and seeing the pine trees via your car lol it looks so refreshing!!
This is so interesting!! It’s so true that you become anosmic over time if you don’t give your nose a rest. I would only spray once or twice when I began on this scent journey and now I spray ( almost) with reckless abandon and then wonder why I can barely smell my perfume a few hours later( or less 😆).
I will now ( think about) giving my nose a rest once in a while…maybe…

I'm not brave enough to try this experiment 😅 It happens that I skip a day without wearing any fragrance but not more than one or two days if I'm sick for example.
I remember when I was not wearing fragrances a few years ago, I was using lots of Lush products and these products are sooo strong I didn't feel the need to wear any fragrance on top ^^
Hi Karine! I hated it this, but I'm glad I did it. Of course I'm now back to my overspraying ways, but perhaps I'm a BIT more conscientious these days. Lush products are very strong indeed. I used to use one of their deodorants, and you're right, one doesn't need a fragrance on top! It's always so lovely to have you here! I sometimes don't wear perfume if I'm at home, but to work/ going out I would feel naked and jealous of others when I smell them

try the demeter fragrances... they dont last long but give you an experience thats non offensive to others.

Dude, as much as it sucked, it was quite eye-opening. It's such a simple thing, really. "Open eyes, go through day without perfume. Repeat." I think it's amazing that most "normal" people do this daily,. And then there's US who die a little inside even at the THOUGHT of the IDEA of such a thing.
What I love most about perfume is YOU and the others whose comments you see below - we GET EACH OTHER. My mother has never worn perfume a day in her life. She wore nail polish a few times, and make up exactly twice, both times as a joke. I was not raised among people who knew of such luxuries, but I am now surrounded (albeit virtually) by people who love the same thing I love, and it feels amazing to be allowed to be here. P,s with the perfume tray i hide all the ones im not using so i wont be tempted P. Sss i also keep my most used in all silver 8ml travel twist spray thingies (my bedroom is all gray) that way i wont get sensory overload from the color/bottles... How do i tell them apart? Lable maker!!!
I LOVE these ideas!! Sensory overload is TOTALLY a thing I experience when I'm choosing a fragrance! I have an old-style label maker, but have you seen the ones where they connect with your phone and you can pretty much print anything you want? GENIUS!

🤩What an experiment Julija! 4 days you did that!! At least you know what it feels like now and guess what you never have to go back to that fragrantless place again if you don’t want to. And you’ve discovered You don’t wanna spray anything before bed, and that you want to only spray a certain amount of perfumes on you per day - all things that you didn’t know before you did this experiment so all in all I think it’s very successful experiment 🔬🔭🥼I bought my very own perfume at the ripe age of 30 and let me tell you I am never going back! I can only handle 10-16 sprays of one perfume per day, well ok perhaps another 10 to 16 if I’m going out at night time…and ok we’ll also maybe 10 to 16 on the pajamas only if it’s a night in with the fam and I’m feelin fancy…😂 I’m sure I’ll have to tame this addiction someday but not yet 😅

During your experiment did you notice that your seatbelt smelled like your perfume collection? Mine does, and probably the whole vehicle does! When I gave my old car to my college student niece, she said she loved the smell because it reminded her of me. I’ll bet your car smells like you too.

In the 90’s that was the norm , at least for me.
I only wore Channel Platinum Ëgoiste and only if i was going out or there was a party or something.
It was more a part of dressing up.
Now i usually wear a cologne, but i take breaks from it.
Also: I think experiments like this are a good thing.

Good morning, beautiful Julija!! Well, I watched it and I almost cried along with you. 🥹🥺😭 It's amazing how much scents touch our lives and affect our overall feeling of well-being. I have always been "into" fragrance, but when the pandemic came, it became clear how therapeutic it really is. I don't have to work as hard to stay aware of scent, because I have ADHD so I forget to put on perfume about 2-3 times a week. 🤷♀️ As much as I love it! I know, it's crazy! We'll, *I'm* a little crazy, but that's OK.
