ZYYX 3D Printer Unboxing and First Use

  • ZYYX sent over their 3d printer for me to get some usage on AND give my opinions on. Right away, I could tell it was packed with care. It didn't work right out of the box - but that was from a cable coming loose during shipping. Fix took minutes, and it was up and running in no time. How well did the first print go? Have a watch and find out.

    I don't think I could ever buy a printer without a heated build plate.

    Zyyx support is awesome. The acetone will help a lot. Sometimes we acetone the plate and then don't have to do it again for a few weeks. It's almost like it gets seasoned after a few times. Our first benchy came out great.

    It sounded really quiet. I thought that on unheated print beds on inclosed units, that the doors keep the heat from the extruder inside to provide heat to the bed.
    Either way I can't wait to see a full review on this printer. Thanks for the content and information.

    Perhaps it would help to have the lid on and the doors closed to keep the ambient heat in the machine.
    If it doesn't have a heated bed for ABS printing, why do they bother providing an air filter?

  • @williamhayden7711
    @williamhayden7711 7 лет назад

    My guess on why Benchy broke loose, maybe put the lid on and close the doors. Perhaps having it fully open like that didn't allow the bed to heat up properly or stay hot enough. Just guessing. At any rate the ZYYX looks like a pretty sweet printer. BIG, but very nice. That Benchy was looking really good before it came loose and made "art". :D

    Where does Zyyx hide the printer specifications. I Looked all over their web site and could not find any for any of their products. What is the build space dimensions? If no heated bed wouldn't you be limited on what material you could build with? For over $2k there is a bunch of printers out there for less and w/heated bed! Thanks for the great review. High Five! !!!!!

    I'm doubtful that a ribbon cable came loose during shipping... there's far too much force required to unplug anything more than a 4-6 position ribbon cable. Hopefully they are taking action to prevent this in the future... like a small dab of RTV silicone.

    Nick Lievendag said this about bed adhesion with PLA on the ZYYX: "... I would describe the build plate adhesion as reasonably good: if you wipe it with acetone frequently most PLA print will stick to it, but they’re never too stuck and easy to remove. This balance works well to print big and medium parts without a raft, but it’s not sticky enough for small parts with minimal contact areas: these need a raft or painter’s tape to increase adhesion."
    - nicklievendag.com/
    My 2 ¢:
    I don't usually consider benchys to have small contact areas, but perhaps a raft is needed without the use of painters tape.

    @irvinewestcole669 7 лет назад

    TLDR: The machine needs a different approach, always wipe clean the build plate with a little acetone, for adhesion.
    I own a Zyyx. Their first model in fact.
    The build plate should be wiped cleanly before first use and then the print sticks nicely, more so in fact, that it was a little trouble removing the print the first time. The build plate expectancy is 6 months. Mine lasted 2 years before finally giving out.
    The machine does indeed print at the promised 100 micron resolution, altough mine goes all the way to 94 ( wouldnt reccommend it. The fiddling is tiresome and simply not worth it.
    The machine is extremely responsive to any little love you give it, gives a lot for little tweak.
    What i would reccomend is tightening all three screws and release them together, it will go a long way in regards to calibration.
    Their PLA works fantasticaly with 180C never fiddled with the settings till i started using other filaments.
    This printer is not for people who like a lot of fiddling, its semiclosed enclosure, makes it real troublesome to access all the electronics.
    A last point of the machine Layer height is important for adhesion. lowering first layer height will affect GREATLY the adhesion. to the point of bonding the buildplate and the plastic.
    Its also compatible with abs, flexi and other materials. All in all the machine is of high quality, and does great prints, just be sure to know the build plate, and keep it closed while printing.
    And their customer service is fantastic, takes around a day till they respond but they always do and they do their best to help you to the max of their ability.

    Maybe print something in PLA at a proper temperature for PLA? 235 is a bit high, and that may have contributed to the benchy getting broken. Doesn't seem like a fair impression for viewers looking to buy a printer.

      Grady Delp The benchy didn't break, it suddenly came off the build plate, because of poor adhesion. Also, the model was included on the SD card that came with the printer... One would expect that it would be a model optimized for the printer.
      For me, that leaves me a bad impression about this printer.

      Vexelius Poor adhesion could have been because of the improper temperature. And 235 is a temperature for ABS, not PLA. It wasn't explicitly stated, but printing at the proper temperature for the material would definitely yield different results

      Grady Delp I know. But my point is, it doesn't make any sense to ship a printer with a PLA roll and a model set up with a temperature that is more suitable for ABS. In any case, they could have prevented this from happening by naming the file BenchyABS or something like that.
      I was curious about this printer, but after watching this video, I think that I'll be going for other options.

      The printer didn't ship with PLA, it actually didn't ship with any included filament. Joel mentioned that he used a spool of Colorfabb PLA/PHA that he had. Personally I'm not entirely convinced that the extrusion temperature is 100% to blame, while high for PLA, I'm more curious to see if it has to do with the different adhesion method on the build-plate. I'll be waiting for a second-thoughts/follow-up video. Judging a printer on a straight out-of-the-box print is a little hasty for me, if it continues to have similar issues, then I'll be more concerned.

    If a Benchy wont stick bigger stuff will struggle too.

      I got it to stick, and other stuff to stick, thanks to a new roll of filament. the stuff I was using was OLD and turns out didn't do well on another machine I tried it on. phew.

    OMG, what an absolute piece of crap! It costs how much and you can't even fit the filament spool inside the printer?!?!?!111 I bet it can't even make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs... LOL 🤣🤣🤣
