Gabba 2021 when Shubhman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar were trying to take India to their greatest ever test and series win, there was one man named Cheteshwar Pujara who made sure that they don't lose.
@@captaindd694 yeah but the amount of runs u score is way more important than the strike rate especially in tests where nowadays most test go only for 4 days
You just don’t muck around with a player that can take 14 blows on the body and keep going. You don’t mess with dravid, you just need a sehwag at the other end. Puji’s got a Gill now.
Pujara had a set target of playing lots of deliveries as possible and tiring the Aussies bowlers and making the ball old. So the likes of pant can later come and capitalize on that. Which I think he succeeded in doing playing over 900+ balls in that series.
He's a big reason the team's success outside of Asia in the last 5-6 years. Doesn't matter if he's slow or quick, he's winning us matches. Great piece by the way, loved it!
In an interview Pujara said - its always easy to play shots to get out of the situation early n get out in the process and tough to stand there n taking the hit surviving n soaking up the pressure..
I mean if its easy, why would you opt to go for the tougher job and make it even more tough for the entire team? PS: I love everything that Pujara does. (It is just that the toughest thing of all those that he mentioned in the interview is to find the balance between the two.)
@Riteshbabu Allam I agree, thing is the Aussies had their plans (mostly the field positioning) working against him which made it even more difficult for him to score. Yeah he plays dual roles. (i.e make sure the ball gets old enough before he gets out and manage to score runs off the loose deliveries. Also more often than not he ends up doing the former more consistently)The absence of virat had a major impact on the overall state of the game since Rahane and Vihari were forced to follow Pujara as soon as the openers gets out and since they have similar playstyle (I know Rahane can counter-attack at times but he had to be responsible this time around), the trio hence were forced to play Pujara-esque innings. Finally I was disappointed to see that Pujara wasn't quite able to get through the Australian tight field position strategy (credit goes to their ultra-disciplined bowling lineup too) by the end of the series whereas Steven Smith ended up figuring out a way to score runs against Ashwin. PS : Even if Pujara counter attacked (assuming that he managed to execute his shots perfectly all the time) those lines that their Bowlers opted to bowl against him was aggressive and they know that they don't need to change it unless he figured out to sneak singles. Whereas when Smith counter attacked those lines bowled by Ashwin, the bowler didn't have to much options since Smith was able to push the Mid off and mid on back at the boundaries generating opportunity for easy singles.
Surprised to not find too many Pujara bashers in the comments, oh wait they don't have the time to watch the whole video, too busy flexing their muscles, admiring their tattoos and riding bikes. you've attracted an eclectic crowd Jerrod!
The positive side to Pujara's style of batting is that we can have more tests going deep into day five and down to the wire, making for exciting viewership.
Legend has it that Pujara came out of his 1000 ball long practice session only to check out JK's essay (probably gave a like too!?) and then went back for a 5000 ball long practice session inspired by this piece. Cheers Jarrod, appreciate this and please keep these coming at a better rate? On second thoughts, I guess sustainably doing these for longer period of time counts for more than keeping these coming at a faster rate :D
Now, this one is really amazing. People always forget to see importance of impact playing number of bowls have on the game. And as a number 3 batsman, often it is his job to play out fairly new ball and give better chance to number 4,5 batsmans to bat against older ball. It would be interesting to see how many balls he faced (or strike rate) betweens 0-25 overs. And same stat for second new ball. I've a feeling that he scores faster facing 2nd new ball. Which is kind of obvious with tired bowlers but would be interesting to see that kind of stat.

It requires on average very high quality balls to get him out..and is a good insurance player in terms of seeing off tough bowling spells..for example the mercurial cummins could have had a bagful of more wickets had he not to some extent blunted a cummins hostile spell or metronomic hazelwood spell under nibbling conditions
Personally problem is not Pujara, he has a set role, plays a certain way and most often than not does it pretty well. It's the partnerships and other players around him that create the problem. If others don't try to be proactive and play at a same pace as Pujara (atleast when Pujara is batting below 50). The scoreboard doesn't move enough and if there is a case when couple of wickets fall along with Pujara, the pressure builds massively on the lower order as the balls are played without enough runs on the board and probably a second new ball within sights. At home it is fine as India score rapidly anyway but sometimes is visible on away tours. Great content by the way! New Sub from now!👍🏼
I've been enjoying these videos. Can you please do a video on some of my favourite topics in cricket: 1.Was Dean Jones being dropped fair as he was still a world class batsman in tests in the 90s? 2.Can you do a piece on whether Vinod Kambli was wasted by the ICCB? IMO, he seemed like he was a better and more stylish batsman than Tendulkar but I've always wondered was it a combination of his recklessness/poor management that basically meant India wasted one of the best talents around that time? 3.Australian Selection Policy and our decline in test batsmen. Apart from Pucovski, it seems like selectors just haven't chosen a decent top order/middle order in a while. I didn't think Khawaja deserved to be dropped. Is the problem the selection policy or Sheffield shield cricket declining? Anyway, Jarrod, your videos are so insightful and great.
the general consensus after the series was that he tired out the bowlers enough for players like Pant to take advantage. Sometimes people ( including me) need to reserve judgement about how certain players play until we get the context of how the team went about and what the role was of the specific players
Couldn't tire out boult and co in nz tho? How about in Wi? The truth is he never really does, whenever the pitch has something in it for the bowlers. Good for flat batting roads, and does well in india and sl. That's about it.
@@poo-tinthedwarfbunkerb1tch535 Isn't that the case with most of the batsmen in the world? :( There are just a handful batsmen in this world who can do well in all conditions and that's a fact. That's what makes test cricket the toughest format
In Ash's youtube video, he told that Pujara doesn't play attacking shots as it will make the field to spread out and only 1 run would be possible after that with risk free shots. But if he resists attacking shots, he can tap loose balls into the gap and get more runs.
Pujara is an old fashioned test batter. In this age of bang bang slogging, he is a throwback to the old era. I dunno what the fuss is about. For every kohli/ponting/sachin, you need a pujara/cook/Sibley as well.
Not his strike rate , but my main worry about pujara is that he is not scoring as heavily as 3-4 years ago. He is getting out after scoring half centuries. I just have a feeling that age factor is slowing him up in run making and may be his best days are behind him .
Whoaaa... These are some numbers when juxtaposed mean a lot different. Thanks so much Jarrod! I shall let tyem sink in. If pujara had been notout and batting in the 'Run a ball situation' maybe with or instead of Pant. . . would India have been better off or worse .. I wonder? Any thoughts?
Huge respect to pujara 👏👏👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌 He literally made the Aussie bowlers so tired and frustrated that made the other batsmen to go for their shots and for the win The new wall after Dravid
Hey @Jarrod Kimber, it would be great if you can statistically analyze how do players such as Pujara and Azhar Ali that have massive dot ball percentages, impact the performance of batsmen (especially attacking batsmen) at the other end. Their sturdiness can liberate the partners sometimes as seen in Brisbane, or I guess hinder the flow, which I feel sometimes happens with Kohli when he plays with Pujara. As an indicator, Kohli's 0-50 conversion in tests is also not as impressive as his rest of the records.
That's a cricviz stat, so probably better to ask them. But they're generally looking for a shot with boundary intent would be my guess. It's a subjective measure, but gives us a good idea overall.
Cheteshwar pujara played 86 test match with average of 46 including 18 century and mohammad azharuddin played 99 test with avarage of 45 something including 22 century and with 63 strike rate and pujara strike rate is 40 when i compare these two stats i feel how genious was azhar beacuse he used to come for batting after 3 wickets plus in his bowling attack was more dangerous and green top wicket used to prepare for test matches salute to the legend azhar
azharuddin was class apart,he would have broken quite a few records if not for that match fixing/match fixing allegation....the closest we got someone like him is VVS laxman
When you score slow It frustrating for the bowlers that is what Pujara is trying to achieve and done a good job which is working quite well for him (good job Pujara)
Awesome video mate ! Even I felt Pujara was too slow and didn't show intent after the first test match ! But I was so wrong ! Without Pujara India wouldn't have gone on to win both those series down under ! Great Player !👍🏼
If Pujara gets 0 off 100 and then gets 50 off the next 100 balls, he's done his job of wearing out the new ball as well as of scoring runs. But. If he gets less than ten off 50 and then gets out, he's failed both. It's a fine line and it's his own style. But Virat has an argument as well. There needs to be at least one batsman with a slight attacking mindset. Because you can't allow the bowlers to settle, or the good ball that gets you out will become even more imminent. THAT IS WHY India have decided to pair up attackers and defenders on the crease. Promoting Pant. Rahane playing both roles based on the situation. Pujara doing his thing. Gill, Pant and Rohit doing their thing. It's why India have batted so well for 7 innings in this test series. I'm not gonna mention what happened in the one innings they didn't :-(
Sometimes a team can bat too fast as well. You have to manage time in test cricket. On some types of pitches that start deteriorating on day 4, it's advantageous for the team batting second to make sure that the team batting first doesn't get to start their second innings early on the third day. In Pujara's case, his job this time was to hold up one end and as a result drain the batteries of the Oz pace attack and keep an Indian collapse from happening. That he didn't kick on to get a big hundred is a testament to the high quality of the Oz bowling attack.
There are exceptions here however. The likes of Rohit and Pant in a team make a genuine difference especially in 4th innings chases where the captain is unsure of a declaration target or whether to set an attacking or a defensive field as we saw. But yes, as long as there's a balance within the team this shouldn't matter and is in fact beneficial to have a Pujara in every team. P.S: What's your thoughts on where Pujara should bat? Would he not be ideally suited to opening the innings? Plus, there are a lot of theories on what the ideal strike rate should be for a number 3 batsman.,.Chappel goes on about this...again I'm not sure whether it matters or not...Ponting v Dravid for eg. P.S.S: Can you do a video on the corollary -> imo strike rates for bowlers are also overrated...it's bowling averages that matters most. Lot of the fast bowlers have v low strike rates while spinners don't but ultimately doesn't really matter that much as they can't bowl too many overs.

Jarrod Kimber is a brilliant analyst. Awesome writer. Really enjoyed a lot of your articles around the world cup
This is God level analysis
New Sub from now!👍🏼
Boy, is that a great video! This channel will blow up soon.
You never know what will take my interest.
Cricket’s greatest poet Kanye West.. “Bat Slow Homie” 🤣
the general consensus after the series was that he tired out the bowlers enough for players like Pant to take advantage. Sometimes people ( including me) need to reserve judgement about how certain players play until we get the context of how the team went about and what the role was of the specific players
Very honest of you.
There are just a handful batsmen in this world who can do well in all conditions and that's a fact.
This is my 3rd watch in all time and Jarrod, sir, what a piece of work. ❤
Pujara is an old fashioned test batter. In this age of bang bang slogging, he is a throwback to the old era. I dunno what the fuss is about. For every kohli/ponting/sachin, you need a pujara/cook/Sibley as well.
Josh Hazelwood will be watching this video for the next series. 😂😂
😓 or may be not
Not his strike rate , but my main worry about pujara is that he is not scoring as heavily as 3-4 years ago. He is getting out after scoring half centuries. I just have a feeling that age factor is slowing him up in run making and may be his best days are behind him .
A data analyst doing cricket.....GOLD
Just love jarrod's way of explaining cricket 👍🙌

Thanks for putting this together. This was amazing

Great work! enjoyed the video a lot!
Wow! That was some legendary level analysis... totally loved it
Lmaooooooo that schematic of the ground that showed scoring areas for the fab four against the off stump good length balls made me crack up even I saw that Smith hits it to the leg side lolololol. This is so fucking funny.
Wow, great analysis! You are the CricData scientist :)
If pujara had been notout and batting in the 'Run a ball situation' maybe with or instead of Pant. . . would India have been better off or worse .. I wonder? Any thoughts?
Pujara's is so close to figuring out the Matrix .
Huge respect to pujara
👏👏👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌
He literally made the Aussie bowlers so tired and frustrated that made the other batsmen to go for their shots and for the win
The new wall after Dravid
most analytical youtuber in cricket, keep it up mate👍
Putting it on my business card
Great video.. applause to your efforts🙏
AWESOME, overall review. One of THE BEST ever!
Jarrod, you're the GOAT of cricket analysis
Ha
So much stats ....my brain wants rest🤣👍🏻
Dang, you the same dude who used to write for Cricinfo page 2? Anyways great content and analysis, really enjoying it so far.
Yeah, I did that.
@@JarrodKimberYT Really used to enjoy your pieces, they were funny yet insightful. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.
Hey, at 5:48 On what parameters do you evaluate that a shot is an attacking one?
That's a cricviz stat, so probably better to ask them. But they're generally looking for a shot with boundary intent would be my guess. It's a subjective measure, but gives us a good idea overall.
I love your in-depth analysis
I could make a video about why attacking players matter too.
Pujara is rare in these times.
The only man in the world who can make this kind of videos is u.
There were others, I had them killed
