    This was actually a battle between two of Michigan's best recent high school wrestling stars. Last year, Aiden Smith was 49-1 and state champion at 135 and Josh Howey was 30-4 and 5th in the state at 145. Both are serious athletes, and this tight match is what you would expect.
    Thanks, again, to Midwest Wrestle for these incredible on-the-mat and steady videos... the best in the country by far.

      Admittedly, my knowledge of Michigan wrestling is relatively limited, and so this was really interesting news to me. I don't know if I've ever told you how much I really appreciate all the additional color context that you frequently provide on a lot of these matches. Thank you so much for all of your contributions, and for the kind words as always!

    • @MidwestWrestle
      @MidwestWrestle  Год назад +3

      Although it's hard to make a general statement without knowing what specific maneuvers you are referring to, flips are permitted in college wrestling. In high school, a front hurdle over an opponent who is kneeling or who is down on the mat is legal, but a front hurdle over a standing opponent is illegal, and all backflips are illegal.

    • @callen8000

      Running away from contact will get you a stalling call. Some refs call it more often than others, which is one of the things that a wrestler needs to adjust to in a match.

      Welcome to the channel. I recommend the following website to help with understanding the foundational concepts of Folkstyle wrestling:
      www.indeewrestling.com/folkstyle-wrestling-rules/
      Please feel free to comment any time you have a question not answered above or below:
      Q. What do {G} and {R} in the video title mean?
      A. They refer to the green and red ankle bands which the wrestlers wear, and the wristbands which the referee wears, that are used for scoring purposes.
      Q. Who won the match?
      A. Those details can be found in the description for each video.

    Unattached?

    • @MidwestWrestle
      @MidwestWrestle  Год назад +7

      The NCAA gives wrestlers 5 years to compete in 4 seasons while officially representing their school, with the fifth year being a "red-shirt" year. A red-shirt year gives athletes (oftentimes freshmen) the opportunity to acclimate to the higher intensity of college wrestling by competing independently of their school. When a college wrestler registers for a tournament unaffiliated to their school, they are referred to as unattached.
