I would’ve preferred these moments to be actual scenes instead of an actual montage. It just felt so rushed and eager to get the plot moving instead of showing Rei’s development in more detail.
The movie is already pretty long so I guess it was the most efficient solution since it's also important to not shift too much the focus on another character than Shinji. Let's agree to have a spin off about Rei^^
The truth is I think it was a montage because although Rei G was a necessary character for Shinji to improve his mood, the goal that the creator of evangelion wanted to give him was to die so that shinji would be willing to join (the organization that was against nerv whose name I do not remember xD) apart from giving tenderness for his innocence (oUwUo) but compared to the other characters his story was not so interesting. Pd: Let me put this rope around my neck, since the beginning of the series I wanted a relationship between Rei and Shinji U_U
