Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and the vagus nerve - cervical instability can cause GI dysfunction

  • Ross Hauser, MD discusses how the vagus nerve innervates our gastrointestinal (GI) system and can cause numerous GI dysfunction symptoms if it is not functioning properly. Additionally, how cervical instability (a structural cause) can be the reason why someone's vagus nerve is not functioning properly and why it is common for people to have both migraines and nausea among many other symptoms.

What great info! Imagine you don't make/have enough stomach acid, your pancreas doesn't release enzymes for digestion, so you get heartburn....and what does a conventional doctor do? Prescribe an acid blocker further causing damage to your gut. Unreal.

@@dianearnold5381 Hi Diane, Thanks for the feedback. If this is the first you're seeing Dr. Hauser, you may be surprised how much work he's done in the field of natural medicine and the dedication our whole clinic has toward getting patients off unnecessary medications and breaking the need for addictive pain killers. Prolotherapy is a regenerative injection treatment, not like cortisone or botulinum toxin. We also have a wonderful chiropractor on our team here. The combination of the Prolotherapist and Chiropractic approach has been great for our cervical dysstructure cases. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion of medical doctors too. It can also cause seizures. I was diagnosed with Epilepsy because of it but my dad brought me to a chiropractor after the hospital's couldn't figure it out. After a treatment plan the vertebrae stopped pressing on my vagus nerve and my grand mal seizures stopped completely. It's been about 13 years and I haven't had a seizure of any kind since. This seems to be something that people haven't quite figured out yet that really would help a lot of seizure sufferers and even rid them of their seizures completely like it did for me.

I have had xmany health issues throughout my life. Around 1985 I started having neck issues. It started with a reverse curvature of the C spine. Now I have disc desiccation, broad based herniation, stenosis, spurs and other issues I don't understand from C1 to C7. Until I watched your videos, I had no idea of health problems related to it that I have. GERD, IBS, ringing in my ears, anxiety, horrible headaches, vision, dry eyes and mouth, skin and muscle, trouble swallowing at times, dizziness and blood pressure fluctuations so crazy I had to call an ambulance twice. It was dangerously high the first time and dropped so low that my BP machine couldn't read it the 2nd. I actually dropped to the floor when it was low. The doctors did a lot of tests but had no idea why it was happening. All tests of my heart etc were fine. It still jumps around. I've been on BP medication for 20 years. I'm having a new MRI next week because the last one was 3 years ago. Thank you so very much for this information. I will be talking to my spine doctor about it.

sounds exactly like me and i cant eat any cereal grains or tubers. i just eat veg fruit and lots of meats and my digestive system calms down a lot but i do have to have digestive enzymes and magnesium everyday. train doing costochondritis back stretches as it will let you have bigger breath intakes and also try squatting/cardio multiple times a week as the legs require more oxygen so its best to get them effiecient. i have had every test under the sun and the doctors could never figure my issues out but i came to the realization that my whole body is out of whack as i constantly felt the same symptoms as you but its better when i stay away from carbs completely make sure i stretch and relax parts of my body. do you have hypermobility by any chance as it runs in my family and we all have the same issue.

How this came to my feed & just happened to fit my conundrum; is a miracle in itself.
This is something NONE of the gastro doctors I've seen have ever taken the time to consider.
I have major neck damage & my gut does nothing, no gas, bloating or pain, but terrible constipation no matter how
    healthy & minimally I eat.
I basically feel numb & nothingness in my gut.
The doctors tell you "more fiber" which makes it majorly worse or they give you a drug like Linzess.
I mentioned that I wondered if there were a possibility of my neck & back nerves interfering, and the doctor said
"that would be very rare, one would only see that in someone with paralysis in a wheelchair."
That doctor is the big deal in the Hudson Valley of NY... frightening.
On a sidenote; he must hear about Jeff Goldblum on a daily basis.

Agreed, found this quite accidentally and it's so very fitting for what I've been dealing with for a few yrs, seems some type of "divine" intervention going on. The constipation is brutal, like my intestines have just shut down. I've got a whole list of other symptoms too that I just knew were connected. I've got old injuries which have caused some serious structural abnormalities. Who knew being crooked could cause such havoc lol.

I have cervical instability which on top of that all of the symptoms you outline in most of your vagus nerve videos and the multiple physicians I’ve seen here in west Texas have no idea why I’m having the in-compasanating symptoms. This is so incredibly true to what I experience sporadically. I’ve looked into prolotherapy and have found it is not covered by insurance. I wish to God some one some where could properly diagnose me. It is embarrassing for me to even to have to interact with my family much less anyone else. I lose complete control of my body whenever I wake up with these symptoms.

I had a very traumatic life , pushing on.. Several seizures along with vomiting and dizziness most of the time ending up in the ER. Once staying for 4 days for acute pankritus not being a drinker or any good reason the Dr would send me to a general physician who offered perscriptions for stress I went a natural route. Did there imaging and wow finally with nueroscience and a better understanding. I've started meditating , reading , listening changed my career to have less trauma to get control of my nervous system

I developed tinnitus years ago - Likely from using an improperly adjusted leg press machine. The sharp pain in my neck, all the way up to the back of my head was instant, and the pain lingered for several days afterwards. Then the tinnitus began. Fast forward about 15 years: I still have tinnitus despite enrolling in a clinical trial using rTMS treatment and now I also have some of the gastrointestinal problems you described. I can only eat a child's portion in one sitting. I'm determined to find out how to (safely) do self-vagus nerve stimulation. My insurance deductible is too high so I'm on my own. Videos like yours provide valuable information for people like me, as well as others who might not be able to get a definitive diagnosis. I have much respect for you and so much gratitude. Thank you!

What a breath of fresh air, doc! My loved one has many symptoms which I believe are related to the vagus nerve, at least partly due to a possible sliding hiatus hernia, including left arm pain which is often relieved by belching, shortness of breath when he bends over, occasional IBS, lack of appetite/weight loss, occasional lip tingling, ongoing anxiety, neck pain/grinding, headache, occasional high blood pressure, lightheadedness/dizziness (possibly from ace inhibitor). Of course, because of his age his doc wants to put him through all the typical cardiac tests first. I get it, but I really don’t think his heart is the issue. His EKG was perfect, he does not have chest pain or nausea, his LDL is a bit high but so is his HDL and his triglycerides are low. The preponderance of evidence, and the timing of the symptoms suggests a vagus nerve issue, in my humble, uneducated opinion.

@@tatianacoll8045 If it's constipation, oil helps like castor oil, nasty but it works. To digest food get good quality enzymes. I use Caring Sunshine, they're online. For constipation it's a constant balance of fiber and water, so what helps me immensely is Celery Juice. It activates hydrochloric acid. Fruit fiber like pears, apricots, different varieties of apples can be too much fiber for me. Eat your water like melons, strawberries, etc... and it doesn't hurt to research and get a good para cleanse. I get mine from the source I mentioned before, it's natural Chinese herbs by the way. @@lozza1927 I have a small hiatal hernia as well. Well it was diagnosed as small when it was detected in mid 2010. Waiting on a new endoscopy now, but I’m having more issues than ever after a stomach bug about two months ago. Ever since I had a pretty much 24 hour bug (threw up 3 times that day), I have had severe digestion issues! My regular doctors are so incredibly clueless it’s not even funny. They mentioned none of this, told me my concerns about my stools and lack of digestion, were all anxiety. Told me she didn’t want to hear about that and that un-digested food was completely normal. Like yeah right. Anything fatty is going right through me. The symptoms have been nothing short of terrible. Bloating, inflammation, difficulty breathing at times, horrible constipation, nausea, I even get super hot from it, like hot flashes and have to cool myself with cold water immediately. I spoke with a specialist on Friday, who told me about my Vegus nerve. I am getting quotes from doctors in Mexico. I have an appointment with a local surgeon on august 9th. After 12 years of being told it was too small to repair, I am done messing around. I have to get these symptoms addressed asap. I can no longer work or play with my kids, and I have a business to run, and a family to live for. So sorry to go on and on, unfortunately this is the most excitement I’ve had in some time. Seeing others with similar issues. You mentioning the hernia and nerve in the same sentence, gave me so much hope that my assumption could be correct! Thank you so much 🙏🙏

My wife is going through the pinch nerve situation as well and we started seeing a chiropractor since doctors aren't helping other than giving nausea medicine. The chiropractor is slowly but surely helping more with every appointment and we have a series of exercises to do that help. If it is the same as hers, you should try stretching your neck both left and right while lightly pinching the neck muscle. But ultimately, I suggest finding a chiropractor to get some help along with his advice.

When you consistently never get your quality of life back, to the point you can't even lift a box without paying for it later, or even sit in a car where certain seats and headrest put your spine in an uncomfortable way that caused you to deal with extra pain for a day or two, doctors should realize that you need further help. I LOVE HOW in Caring rehab's videos they mention working to CORRECT SPINAL ALIGNMENT! They want to solve your problem not just treat the symptoms. .... So glad your wife is doing better! Every time I think about going to the toilet, or get close to one, that's when the urge hits the most. I also have an extremely stressful job, and anxiety is really affecting me. I'm praying it is the vagus nerve.
UPDATE: I found out that it was the inferior quality coffee that I was drinking! I switched to LOW ACID, clean coffee and it cut my watery stools by 70 percent. Then I switched to DECAF version of the same coffee, and that cut it to 95% stopped. I still get urges, maybe once during the day, and once at around 6 AM, but it's no longer watery. Dr, Ross....... Wow . My God, you are so SPOT ON..... After surfing the Web for years, I finally have stumbled on to you and your relevant dissertation . I have been seeking recognition of this from my many doctors.... Orthopedics, Neurologists, Psychologist, GIs, Rheumatologists, etc., I have a consortium of many spinal issues : Stenosis in many areas of the spine (cervical, thorasic, and Lumbar), DDD, Facet Arthritis, Arthritis in my Hips, knees, and now in the ankles. Moreover, I have suffered from IBS for at least 35 years . I have a shorter right leg stemming from a fractured right femur at age 15 (I'm 69 now), the growth plate was fractured and did Not grow while I was in Traction for 6 weeks and then a full body cast for 3.5 months. After the cast was removed, the Ortho doctor realized that my right leg is shorter by an inch. THAT shorter right leg which was left unaddressed (by wearing adjustd shoes perhaps?) has Wreaked complete HAVOC to my spine and well being. I also have 25 degree dextroscoliosis. During the past 15 years more and more deterioration has occurred . My neck gets stiff as a Rock, Cricks and Clacks and that also occurs with great stiffness throughout my spine. I have investigated and learned the extreme importance of the Vagus Nerve. BUT , you are the first medical informist that has alerted to the Cervical spine's spine affect to that Vagus Nerve and hence the main functions in the body. I could go on and on...... I have been to 6 Spinal / Neural Surgeons - No Surgery for me . Too much arthritis in the Lumbar spine. I have been tom 5 different Chiropractors - some little help. Acupuncture all minimal help. I'll leave with this because in addition to all the physical issues, the Chroinc pain and stiffness comes intense anxiety and anxiety attacks. I have suffered from Anxiety attacks for over 35 years. I also saw a web entry by a physician from Canada on a Pain Web site. He emphasized in his article / report on how the Squeezing of the spinal cord (herniated discs, stenosis , etc.) will cause chronic anxiety as the constant physical maladies will affect the Psyche with Pain, Referred Pain, muscle cramping, on and on.... It all makes so much Common Sense once you become educated on the effects of the central nervous system and especially the Vagus Nerve - the Body' Life Blood , if you will.

Hi Aldo, Oh wow, you have been going through a lot for these past few decades. Sounds like you have taken it as an opportunity to really educate yourself in regard to the vagus nerve and the connection to overall health- that's excellent! Not sure if you've already seen our 3-part webinar on the vagus nerve, but it might be something of interest to you if you want to check that out in our webinar playlist. We would be honored to review your case and see you in our center to hopefully get some of the answers you haven't been able to get from the other doctors. Please feel free to reach out and tell us more about your symptoms as well as upload any pertinent medical reports you'd like us to consider: www.caringmedical.com/conditions/prolotherapy-neck-pain-cervical-instability/#get-help-now

@@thartsoe1 I would say 100%. Start by relaxing more and not obsessing about your symptoms. If they are too strong take something for relaxation... research low acidity... especially if you have constipation, you maybe need some enzymes do digest your food... your vagus nerve is off probably because of stress/anxiety and then your stomach can't work properly and than you get your choky feelings from that (and anxiety - globus sensation) and on all that you stress about symptoms :) I personally have app with my chiro but I already am going to therapy (mental), taking enzymes, probiotics, eating clean and meditating in the morning and in the before bed... and occasionally I pop something for relaxing... :D

Selena Cole Give this a try: just a wild guess: try doing regular pushups - I relieved my symptoms by building up my neck muscles so I had a thick neck. 20-30 each morning, then the same at night. Also try inversion therapy to increase bloodflow to the head and neck.

I started having problems shortly after an EGD procedure in December 2019. My problems are asthma, tachycardia, pressure in my chest and almost at times losing my voice. Today my heart rate went over 120. I found a place on the internet that spoke of holding your nose and mouth then try breathing out to stimulate the Vagus nerve. It worked my heart rate was back to normal in about 30-45 mins.

Hi Kenny, Thanks for sharing that. Yes, there are lots of ways to help stimulate the vagus nerve. When it comes to having all of those conditions though, we take it very seriously, as we have some of the most complex and difficult cases come to our clinics with structural problems in the neck that need to be corrected in order to resolve these issues. This way the person does not have to constantly be on alert or having to manage increasingly debilitating symptoms. If you would like our help on your case, we'd be happy to talk with you in more detail and see if you sound like a good candidate for our clinics. We wish you all the best in health and permanently resolving the issues you're having after your EGD procedure. Take care.

I’m pretty sure I just suffered my 1st panic attack, later in the day after my 1st chiropractic adjustment. Never felt that way before and have had 2 smaller episodes since then. Been going on 3 weeks now. I especially sense it coming after eating and with a certain posture on the couch, and not during any other time...

Hi Michael, Thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear that this is happening to you after a chiropractic adjustment. Not sure why the adjustment was done or to what segments of your spine, but perhaps reaching out to them would be helpful to determine what happened and what is recommended to restore your function. If you are not gaining traction with resolving your symptoms, and would like our team to potentially help you here, we'd be happy to review your medical case in much greater detail. We wish you all the best in health and getting to the bottom of what is happening with your positional symptoms. Take care.

Seemed my autonomous nervous system was outta wack, just wasn't sure why altho I'm pretty sure I have a hiatal hernia..low and behold that could be due to vagus nerve issues as well.

I have had Ulcerated Colitis for 40 years. Interestingly, everytime a chiropractor adjusts my mid/low back it causes a flare that can last months. I've had to limit adjustments to emergencies only. I've explained this to each Chiro I have visited and none of them could give me an explanation..... frustrating because the connection seemed obvious to me.
