I sat in the front row of the SOH Concert Hall in 1981 and right in front of the great Rita Hunter singing her world class Brünnhilde. It was just stunning, her beautiful voice, impeccable technique and excellent German. It is something I will never forget and after singing in 3 Ring productions in Munich I have never heard a better Brünnhilde than Rita Hunter. What a wonderful and genuine human being she was.
I was privileged to have known Rita Hunter and her husband John in their days in Sydney teaching very many students in their home in St Ives. She would sit in the next room and if you sang well she would come into the room with her two little dogs and listen to you. John did most of the teaching until his death. She was a lovey jovial woman and her husband John and absolute delight. All the students were devastated when John passed and Rita did a few years after. RIP.
The Fairy song is one of the best encore songs ever as she does it. I have never heard of an opera standup comic other than Anna Russell, but Rita is THE BOMB here! Very funny. It is true she hides the piano when she is in front of it, but still photos just don't show how really lovely her face was when it was animated. This made me even more of a Rita Hunter fan. I have mostly only heard her stuff from the 70's, but she is still in really great voice here at the end of the 80's.

Was privileged to hear her Brunhilde in London in the 70s. She was a bit special (with a great technique).
Fabulous Rita ❤😂
A rare bird indeed & one so rare i didn't even know of her 'til way after her heyday! Thanks for this treat.
RIP Rita Hunter (born #otd in 1933) 🌷🌷🌷
wow. She never lets go of her technique does she? Very good.
Thank you so much; she is quite wonderful and very affecting.
She sings the 'Fairies ' so well. Great storyteller. She was so talented and so loved!
Wonderful. Will always miss her.
It would be good to have the whole concert posted. Is that possible please?
the best i've heard since the "mezzanine soprano" herself, beatrice lillie!
Pure Wallasey, Brilliant. Oh, and did I mention the singing?
This is lovely is there any more of it?
She looks so much like the late great gospel singer Vestal Goodman, she could very well be Vestal's daughter!
Is the "Fairies" song by Liza Lehmann? I don't think I caught it when she announced it. In researching it, it's the only one I could find.
yes!
