It's just bad writing. Hawk is a favorite of mine. The show wants your to feel bad for Demetri even though nobody likes him. Just like they tried with Robby.
Jonah Hex I think it happen because maybe Hawk took Dimitri likely and also Miyagi-Do Karate has proven to be effective even for the inexperienced, take Daniel for example, he only knew Miyagi-Do for a few months but was still able to beat Johnny who was far more experienced than him in Cobra Kai
if it makes you feel any better, Hawk was fatigued from fighting about a half dozen Miyagi-do guys before he finally caught Demitri. So it's not that big a stretch.
I loved how the fight between Miguel and Hawk proves how different they were . Hawk tended to rely more on offense and used risky moves while Miguel is more balanced

If Hawk managed to capture 5 headbands, he was able to get Tory's. There were 6 people on each team, 7 for Red bc Ray was put on their team. So, Hawk managed to defeat almost all of the Black Team's members except for Miguel.
I love how Kreese says that the person standing across from you is the enemy, while standing across from Johnny.
