DIY Pool #13 - My Plunge Pool is Almost Done & IT'S SO BLUE - Off Grid

  • My off grid, DIY plunge pool here in hot Central Portugal is built, and now it's time to make it waterproof!
    I have a couple of layers of goop to apply to the tank, starting with a cement and mystery substance mix and then finishing it off with pool paint. As a fan of natural materials, working with this stuff wasn't exactly inspiring, but it was so nice to get a couple steps closer to finishing. In fact... I do finish! Sadly, though, the pool paint needs a week to be ready so there's no swimming with cocktails in this video, but next time, for sure!
    I hope you enjoy this video and the whole series! It's been a massive amount of work and I've learned a lot and (mostly) enjoyed the process. If you want to see the project from the start, you can check out there entire playlist here - • DIY Water Tank Splash ...

    The color looks lovely, mind you we were wondering if you should have waterproofed the top edges as well to avoid water seeping down inside your pool walls? ….we also understand what a dawning lengthly painful chore this pool has been and your need to finish it soon. ( mojito in hand of course)😜

      Hmm that's a good point! I suppose since the overflow is lower down I didn't think it would get wet, but there will always be waves and splashes. Not sure... the first layer of render has waterproofing powder it in. Eventually I want to make the tops nicer somehow, so that's why I didn't finish it up. I'll monitor the situation and I do have extra blue paint if I need to add that.

    Maybe some tile on the edge would be pretty! I like the blue, it has richness to it, and it draws you in. I'm not sure why you are so under-confident about this work when you have done an amazing job, whilst dealing with all the problems. You've repaired the walls, and made some seating, and then meshed inside two coats of render to reinforce and to avoid future leaks. All good.
    The 'rustic' or stucco finish is entirely appropriate for a water tank being used in that setting as a plunge pool, and the blue swimming pool paint tells everyone what this place now is.
    You'll be so happy when you take your first plunge, mojito or not.
    And by then you'll be thinking of adding some old timber posts around it, so you can add overhead shade when that's wanted.
    Maybe the outdoor kitchen should also be close to here. Such a great addition to your homestead.

      Any time I work with a material I've never used before or try a new technique, I think I try to approach it with a healthy amount of apprehension so I take my time and try to learn along the way. I like the slow and steady approach, especially with new things. I'm very happy with the results but there are lots of things that happen along the way when the camera is off that might not go quite to plan or be tricky, so while you might see the finished product and think I nailed it, it's often a bit misleading so I try my best to share the difficult things too which might come across as not being confident about the work? Not sure, but I think that as long as I work hard, am willing to try things and experiment, and take my time I'll get things done eventually. 🙂
      I have lots of ideas for the space! Definitely a patio, a BBQ, shade, lots of plants... let's see! A project for next year, perhaps!

    @ptolemyauletesxii8642 Год назад +4

    The answer to the mystery of why you have so much material left over on the 2nd coat is because the 2nd coat of just about anything almost inevitably requires less material. This is dependent on the suction of the surface you are going on to. In this case you are going on to what I presume is a cement render, which has a high suction, and also has a rough surface area. The high suction pulls in more of the material on the 1st coat, and the rough surface means more surface area to cover, which also means more material. When you come to the 2nd coat it's going onto the dried 1st coat, which is a very different beast from cement render. The material will go on much more easily and spread further, and the lack of suction will help it go even further. In addition, because the 1st coat has filled in most of the little holes and imperfections in the cement render, there is substantially less surface area to actually cover. It's hard to imagine how much all those little holes and rough spots add to the overall surface area of anything, but it's a surprising amount.
    Mystery solved!

    i never understood why all pools have to be blue. i once saw an infinite pool painted or tiled black. it acted like a mirror for the surrounding landscape and the sky - stunning. apart from that you can always go for a second coat in that lighter color you were looking for. or even go for mojito green 😂. i can already see you sipping that. the land tour in such sweet company was great: your fruit trees are doing so well and already fruiting, not to forget about your watering system: girl that must have been hard work too!

    • @PortugalfromScratch
      @PortugalfromScratch  Год назад

      Good question about the blue! I think white and charcoal were options I saw online, but this was the only choice in the store. I can always change it lighter later if I want to, but I think I like it. I did put a lot of work into watering systems across the land, but in this case those taps were already there. The land came with the water plumbed to each terrace with taps and all I had to do was add a hose! 😁

    Looks like the colour you see in Greece, on those white washed hillside homes(dwellings). I think it looks nice. It’s very blue moody and inviting. Go with it for a bit. If you really hate it then paint it again.

    The reason you had paint leftover with the second coat is that the roller soaked up a lot of the first coat. The brush probably didn't absorb as much. Looks great. You've really done a fantastic job.

    • @pisztufilm
      @pisztufilm Год назад +1

      @@PortugalfromScratchI wouldn't worry about algae too much if they do appear. That's a natural filter, see those fancy "natural swimming pools" they always have greenish water. You can always empty the tank to clean off algae and use them as plant fertilizer 😁 I only use the "green water" for my plants now.

    • @PortugalfromScratch

      @@pisztufilm Good to know! The water will likely always be flowing through the pool and I do empty it often, so it'll be interesting to see how things go!
