Next time you should spend some time in the Victorian village of Ferndale! It's where the movies Outbreak and the Majestic were filmed. Eureka has definitely struggled so much, but I thought you did a good job of being real about that for travelers. Our area is so beautiful and worth seeing for anyone who can get here!
My husband and I just returned home two days ago after staying at an Airbnb in the Avenue of the Giants for a week. We loved it there hiking on numerous trails, seeing the Shrine drive through tree, and other roadside attractions in and around the park. We stayed in an Airbnb in Eureka, California last year in a different residential neighborhood that what you highlighted in your video. We felt safe there where we stayed. We visited the Sequoia Zoo Park and Humboldt Botanical Garden while in Eureka along with the covered bridges.
That sounds like a lovely trip. Such a gorgeous place to explore. I do believe that there are great areas around there, and I apologize if I sounded at all like I was generalizing.
When I drove through there with my 18 ft camping trailer I stopped at someone’s property and asked if I could stay there for a few days. I ended up staying two weeks. Right there in the massive beautiful redwoods
My greatest memory of the avenue of the giantswas i december of 95. I was driving to san francisco from seattle to pick up my girlfriend. I pulled over and walked around completely awestruck.i was the only one there, no tourists !! To this day its my favorite park in the united states.
I live in Eureka. Actually used to live within eyeshot of Carson. Having lived in Fresno and San Francisco prior, Eureka is no more dangerous than any other city. Use common sense when sightseeing. But yeah, the homelessness and drug problem ruins this otherwise wonderful city. Side note: It's pronounced wee-OTT and ar-CAY-ta. Another side note, you missed out not stopping in Ferndale before hitting Eureka. It's a wonderful, clean, quaint place. And Centerville Beach is breathtaking. Stay safe and enjoy your adventures.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and insight. I, of course wish I had spent more time here, and maybe wasn't so burned out from traveling. I think my portrayal was skewed slightly negative because I had such high expectations for Eureka. It's somewhere I've always wanted to visit. It was mainly the interactions I had with people there that gave me a bad taste. However, the city itself and the architecture is beautiful and I truly love the nature surrounding it. I will most definitely put Ferndale on my list to visit in the future along with Centerville Beach. Take care!
I don't understand the intent behind your question. If you're referring to Eureka itself, we are simply showing compassion for the state of the city which is not an unknown fact. It is a stunning place with amazing history. It is unfortunate to see so many struggling. Our travel videos are intended to show the areas we visit and talk about them through our own eyes. We aren't always perfect at conveying our feelings about things, but we do our best and constantly learning as we go. We don't want to sugar coat things or create fake content, we want to be real.
I really liked your presentation and don't mind at all that you shared all that you learned and saw. I just thought other travelers would want to know if anything happened to you based on the fact you visited a known high crime area. I love Humboldt and always hope that the negative community challenges do not bleed out onto travelers because I think everyone should be able to see our magnificent neck of the woods without harm. I continue to do what I can personally to improve the challenges we face. Thank you for your visit and sharing your adventures.
@@IndependentSole Thank you for your perspective, and completely agree. I would always encourage people to visit Eureka and the surrounding areas. We just want to point out that staying in a nearby town may feel a little better to some vs. downtown Eureka. We did have a couple of issues while there, but I didn't feel a need to bring that up in the video because I really think these are isolated incidences and shouldn't deter people from coming there. Eureka seems to be making an effort to improve their old town by growing their arts and music scene. Not to mention just how absolutely gorgeous the area is in general. Northern California will forever have a special place in my heart, and that's why we made a concerted effort to capture its beauty in our videos. 💚 I apologize if I came off a bit defensive. With how negative/mean people can be on the internet, I sometimes automatically assume that's the intent. Thank you for explaining.
@@genelleandmike I’m ashamed I have hauled redwood lumber all over America. I was born in Eureka and drove big fancy trucks all over America hauling finished product kiln dried redwood lumber. Now I live in repentance and hug redwoods and donate money to Save The Redwoods. I hug the trees and ask for forgiveness. I loaded at Samoa Island many times. The huge dining hall for the mill workers is a restaurant. All you can eat breakfast- lunch- and dinner. No menu- you eat what the cooks make. The place was empty during Covid- at least mid week. Community dining at picnic type tables. Delicious food. 88 miles north at Crescent City the jewel of the redwoods is Jedediah Smith state and national park. Way better examples of Sequoia sempervirens. Next time.

I'm so glad you like the architecture of Eureka, it is truly amazing!

That is a stunning place to call home for a little while!
I collected berries until my fingers started falling off! Excellent source of health!
Sounds amazing! @@allensherrill850

You didn’t go to the fern canyon.
I know :( We wish we had more time.
Did any actual harm come to you or any law broken in your presence and/or at your expense?

Hopefully you ate at the Samoa cookhouse which was a saw mill dining hall for mill workers.
Oh no, we missed it :( Next time!
