  • Hundreds of dollars spent on games that I had no intention of actually playing. But those sales are so tempting.

I did this too. Now I made a new rule for myself: dont buy on sale unless I'm going to install and play the game within 1-2 days. This rule also makes me appreciate those games I actually buy. Now I even play games I bought a few years ago. Thanks for the video 😊

If I had to make that choice I'd have no games because my Internet is crap it takes like 3 days for a game to download.

But what do you do with the old ones? I keep going back and forth with games I bought at some point and kinda wanna play, but soon as it's about starting them up, I start hesitating.

Putting a limit on how many games you can buy has really helped me get through the backlog and also prevent the backlog from expanding

Such good advice, I've had to take it myself... plus I've noticed that not only is there all this wasted money on games, but games in general all start to feel boring when you just have this massive collection of them upon you. You get choice overload and everything starts to seem overwhelming and boring, especially if you're forcing yourself to play games you're not interested in just so you can 'check them off your backlog and get your money's worth'.

Buying games and managing storage of them is half the fun for me. We’re supporting our hobby even at mega discount. My favorite thing is when there’s a full moon and I actually engage with my backlog, sadly that’s rare

I've fallen for buying many cheap digital games on PSN over the past years. So many games on my harddrive that i never touched because as soon as a new release hits it gets my full attention, and those old titles never cross my mind again.
I feel like i'm getting into a similar thing with Xbox Game pass on my Series S. Installing so many games that i likely won't play. Though thankfully those aren't costing me anything outside of the $15 for the membership.

I'm addicted to buying physical copies of Nintendo Switch games. If a game interests me a little or it's a "limited" release I'll buy a physical copy of it, sadly. My collection has grown so huge that when I sit down to look at my games to decide what to start I literally spend the whole day playing nothing. Watching your video made me realize how bad my addiction is & how I need to buckle down & only purchase games I really intend on playing. I'm so horrible at self discipline to be truthful. So kudos to you for sticking to your guns. I've really got to figure out a plan for myself. As of recent I've stopped purchasing digital games, which has helped me a little. Now I'm no longer spending hours a day on the Nintendo EShop.

My plan..... Is to wait for my retirement. When im old and cold, im gonna sit under the quilt, play my game, and go on my adventures. I have 469 digital games on x box. Plus more on other consoles. But trust me. I get EXACTLY whay youre saying. Great video.

Kudos to your resolve and thanks for this video. These sales are so tempting really, thanks for the reminder about compulsive buying. Side note - one big advantage of having a physical copy of a game is that you can still resell it. That's what I see other console players do - buy a somewhat expensive title on launch, get through a title and resell after they are done.

About 3 years ago my Steam library hit 400 games even though I only had my PC for 2 years at the time. Had to make two rules:
    No more Humble Bundle.
If I purchase a game I must play it immediately.
This is gonna sound ridiculous but I'd rather spend $60 on one game than spend $20 for the same game + 5 more games. I've purchased maybe 15 games over the past 3 years now.

I think this as happen to all of us at one point in our lives as gamers purchasing games and not playing it.

  • @DD93AFC
    @DD93AFC 2 месяца назад +2

I think with me personally, I will buy a few new games and tell myself I won't buy anymore, but even the next day or 2 I've completely forgotten my discipline I wanted to give myself and I'll go buy a new one. Doesn't even have to be sales, it's just if I'm even remotely interested in what a title has to offer, I'll have no self restraint and buy it.
Like you was saying during the video, we justify it to ourselves that it's only £5 (dollars for you Americans), but that £5 will end up becoming £20, that £20 ends up becoming £100 and so on, though at the time it just seems like it's only £5.
I know and I'm aware of what I do, but I can't seem to gain any kind of control. I love games probably alot more than most things in life, so I buy many titles, then realise I don't have enough time to play them, or even want to play them by the time I've bought them.
I don't wanna cut games out of my life completely, but I'd love to gain some self control over what I'd probably class as an addiction at this point, it has to be said. So ai'd love to live side by side my favourite hobby, but I do need to pack in the purchasing habits. Not sure what a realistic goal is to aim for, but the rest of this month as of 02/06/2024, I should at least start by not making anymore purchases.
I purchased some games earlier before making this comment, but I do realise it has to come to a stop, not a complete forever stop, but a stop for a large period time. Maybe make up some silly rules, like play at least 10 games through to the story ends for them, then maybe I can make a purchase or 2, not sure.
Appreciate the video, hopefully I can actually kill my addiction dead. Here's to hoping and for anyone who feels the same way as I do and wants to make a stop too, I hope it goes well. If you're passing by this comment and would like to share how it's going, please feel free to do so.

I gave up on Rainbow Six Siege because of so many reasons and I put more than 2,000 hrs. into it. Playing my backlog now as well as console exclusives makes me realize how many amazing games are out there that ive been ignoring because I kept forcing myself to play Siege and I'm not having fun with it anymore.

We live in a time where we have an abundance of games at very low prices, with the click of a button.
Unlike before when we had to go to the store and buy an rather expensive game and then play it until we were either bored, Finish with, or until we got a new game when we visit the store again.
During the lockdown I took the opportunity to play Xbox 360 launch games as I have had them in my backlog.

I was thinking about buying Devil May Cry 5, cause a lot of people say the game is good and all, but after I see some gameplays I've realised that the game is not for me, It might be the best game ever for someone else that likes rock and hack and slash for example, but for me It's a game I wouldnt play, because I think is cool but not for me, so thats it there is no problem buying a game, but just make sure that's a game you would actually play and then when you feel in the mood to play the game you play.

This reminds me of how I've had games like Doom 2016, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein The New Order, etc that I've put very little time in but haven't been able to really sit down and play them. As well this last sale on Steam, I bought all the Tomb Raider games (Tomb Raider II through Underworld), Rainbow Six Vegas 2, both Metal Gear Solid V games and Black Mesa. I've been playing Black Mesa and was playing Rainbow Six Vegas with a friend before it decided to break for us and not let us play together.
But yeah I have so many games I haven't gotten to, or haven't beaten yet. Games like Bioshock 1 for instance I'm very guilty of not sitting down and finishing them, this even extends to my library of Console games. It makes me feel extra bad because while I could easily play them, I instead put hours into other games such as Team Fortress 2 or Call Of Duty World At War. Guess I'm just lazy

Even I have been dealing with this same problem with getting too many games lol.. since I have about 465 games on steam and there are times I barely play most of those games.
Since I either get stuck on an online game or get stuck on a single player game that has so much great replay value or I ended up dropping those games and never play them ever
Again and don't complete them which I always can see how the steam summer sale and the winter sale can be a steam gamer worse nightmare when it comes to so many games.
Goes on sale and you buy so much games from the steam winter or summer sale and ended up having a hard time trying to choose what game you would want to play or not bother
To play them which can be such a waste of money not to bother to play them but of course I play them one by one just to complete them though that will take me so much days
And hours to beat the games I got from the steam winter or summer sale.

People spend £70 on one game and finish it in a weekend then say they have nothing to play. This is why I have no problem with buying deals in sales because I can spend £70 on 4 or 5 games and I have them in my library. Now youtube is showing more and longer adverts it is encouraging me to play more games. Gone are the days of watching RUclips for 5 hours, after 20 mins I am done with the adverts.

I just made a similar rule for myself. I am not allowed to buy any new games, untill I complete 3 games from my backlog. For every 3 games from my backlog I complete I am allowed to get 1 new game. I feel like that might insensitive me to find the time to play these games. Most of them I actually bought cause I actually want to play them, I just end up not.

Similar with starting games, not finishing them and starting the next game. It's called overstimulation. The result: You don't value games because you have easy acces to them now. When we were children it was a rare experience seeing a new game. Why finishing a hard game when I can play a brand new game right now? No motivation

I can really relate with this one🥲 I recently got my ps5 after ps1 then I found my self that I keep on buying games. Those games I tried to play probably an hour or 2 but I don’t why I can’t be hook up with some of those games and whenever I see any sale I keep on buying because I always think it’s just 10USD or sometimes 5 USD I can’t miss this sale. So now I have many backlogs still I can’t control my self keep on purchasing games and I remember I still have purchased games on steam as well😅
