- A slide bolt is a fairly simple piece of hardware for securing a door. The options for forging a slide bolt are numerous, so this shows just one approach to the blacksmithing project.
My name is John Switzer, thank you for watching. Black Bear Forge is a small one person shop located in the Southern Colorado Mountains

Thx John I forgot about this video. This must be where I had the idea in my head. Awesome thank you ....Paul🔥🇺🇸⚒
Part 2, cat figured out how to work slide bolt. John starts a new project, making a lock.
Good start! Looking forward to the rest!
Thank you for your videos. I made a bottle opener with a rubix cube twist handle. I watched your video on how to do that twist and it inspired me to get after it. It came out very well. It’s my best work so far. I didn’t realize how much work is involved in this craft. That simple project took somewhere between 4-6 hours! Most of that time was spent working on squaring off 1” round stock and drawing that out 🤬 But I learned A TON making that piece.
Very cool sir! I learn so much from you! Thanks for bringing this knowledge to the table!
I always enjoy watching you work John! I’m really looking forward to the possibility of meeting you in October!
Perfect. I need a bigger one for a barn door. This will be perfect. Have a great weekend John.
Came in from the forge to watch your video. Great content as usual. Yes! Use your safety glasses. I had a good sized chunk of burning charcoal bounce off of mine today. Better than hitting me in the eye.
Thank you for sharing this with us John this really helps my therapy watching you do this
Sound quality was really good on this one, John! Thank you! Love these videos!

John "Im going to stop the cat from going outside with a slide bolt ..."
Cat: "Hold my Beer."
LOL
A week ago I would have said so far so good. But a few days ago we came home and found him on the roof. Snuck out through an open window
Nice project, John. 🐾🔥⚒
Looking good man!
Love it as usual
Very neat idea
Very interesting, indeed. Thank you for sharing.... Nicely done video....
Wow, you are really good at what you do!
1:00 I think you were making a viking sword and just forgot.
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
..How did you know i needed a latch?? Very timely John, Thanks...!!
Nice video
🤘😃🤘
informative thank you!
Interesting!
Looks like you did a little color grading work on your video. I like the project. I'll have my little forge up and running soon. Its just waiting in the living room for me right now. Shop area is not quite ready. Maybe it's your manual lens you are using. I like that you are in focus and sharp and the background is blurred out. Nice separation. :)
No, just trying to use more manual settings while recording. Which also opens up more opportunity for mistakes
So far so good... It looked like you may have utilised your fancy arm for that anvil overhead shot.. It looked good.
I'd like to see how the cats are going to figure this out..... they will. Lol
I am sure they watch every time we open the door
@@BlackBearForge taking notes....
thank you for the metric !
you put up with a lot with that vise. :)
I built a catio for my cat that is mounted to a window in the living room, two sides screened one side to the window and a large cat door on a short side. controle is by opening or closeing the window, so he doesnt bring is rodents he has "found" outside
عمل رائع .

🏈 American style pigskin ! Well back in my day they were stamped made with genuine pig skin ! Never heard of soccer ball in Iowa until mid 80s ! And baseballs were made of horse hide! And how big is this house cat ??? Mountain lion maybe ! Lol 😂 that’s a big ole slide lock! That’ll keep your yard bear out also !
Your cat must be a giant cat 1’ x 1/2’. Bar to hold a cat in seems a little large Unless its a lion your keeping in the house LOL. nice project john i really want to see how it get mounted to the door also. Thx again ....paul
The actual latch portion is only 3/8" round. But it also has to stand up to the humans who will be opening and closing it
Dam, that thing will keep a cougar out of your house, lol
I hope so, although they have never tried to get in
New to this and seen a few of your vids, good stuff - subbed & liked.
I'm doing up a couple hidden lock bolts for a gun vault from rebar and 1/8", basically the same except with provision for a padlock.
It seems like cutting the bar on the chisel was a lot of effort vs using a hacksaw. Is there an advantage to doing it that way besides having to let it cool before cutting it ?
Mostly is is just working hot when the material is hot
@@BlackBearForgeThat's what I figured but didn't know if it made a difference to grain structure or anything. In case it's not clear, I'm still pretty new to this :)
Just how big is your cat?
John your as ornery as my old mentor you’ve still not transitioned to battery power tools ! A super easy sawsall laying there instead of a hacksaw ... I’m 55 it’s not that hard to change 😝! I’m sure a email sent to dewalt or any other power tool maker out there would result in a brand new box 📦 of toys um tools! But I wubya anyhow what tools u use !
I do have and really like battery powered tool, but a hacksaw is way better than a sawzall for this type of work
John how heavy is that hammer you are using on this project to forge the slider?
I think it was 2 1/2 pounds
If I could ask what kind of hacksaw blades to you prefer mine seem to wear out fast and are slow at work.
My favorites are Starett, however most premium blades will more than pay for the extra cost compared to the cheap ones.
Good one John, I noticed sometimes in the video your voice volume changes, probably because your hammering and the mic picks up on that.
Did you make that hardy hole rounding tool? Not sure what it's actually called.
Thats a swage and I think this one was an old one
The video image is noticeably different. It is a clearer, sharper, almost three-D like image ... compared to what you had in the past.
Thanks
Might need a combination lock to keep a cat out! Just don't make the combination "food". They will figure that out too fast. lol
I have 2 cats and their a hand full
Pretty good, but I got some wierd looks by my roommates in the parking lot when I was making it
Was the material originally supposed to be a sword?
No, I tghink I was making knobs on the end for cabinet leatches
Cats! They can do anything. If you don't believe it, just ask one.
Oh, dem pesky kitties. I guess they just want to get out to the shop and make something.
Have you found any little safety glasses lying around?
What Happen To The Music???
There won’t be music in every video. Sometimes they seem like they need music and sometimes they don’t.
