First video outside of machining channels where someone actually knows what a bottoming tap is. And gas welding!
You've become my favorite blacksmith to watch. Your videos are always inspirational and put together well. I've learned a lot from you which has helped my own smithing.
Thank you I appreciate the comment
I like this kind of forgings. Always learn a new tidbit
I like the little reminder to wait for the last 30 seconds. It's like it was meant just for me. I'm watching right to the end before commenting anymore. Great video. I have to make a bunch of bolts for my shed. It's like you're inside my head.
Great video series! Well done. Also, coming from 30 years in Tool & Die....throw your 4-flute taps in the garbage. Get yourself some 2-flute taps. The only thing a 4-flute is good for is chasing already existing threads. Believe me, once you've broken off a crappy 4-flute tap in something that you've worked really hard on, you'll understand.
Beautiful job on the latch...you are a true artisan!
Gee that came out so good, and it looks rustic on the door, a real time honored piece John, love your work
Die grinder and filling is a good spot for a short music clip. :) But then I can turn my volume up and down also. Great video!
Классно молодец мне нравится что работает ручным слесарным инструментом нажовка,напильники.
Great classic design! Awesome job
Looks great John!
As the bolt slides, love it
Fantastic!! And I enjoyed the last bit of humor, "As the bolt slides"

Fantastic latch, that will keep the cat fooled for a little while. ;~)
We’ll see. They’re pretty smart
You have opened new doors for me!!! Thanks!!!
I love the look of the finished product. I was curious as to how the slide handle was going to look, but it really does give it a unique look that’s nice. Great work again sir.
Looking pretty snazzy there Mr. John.
Pretty sure the escape kitty 🐱 will have a tough time defeating this latch
🙏blessings upon ya now,
Crawford out 🧙♂️
Nice project John. Now I want to make one for my basement screen door!!
As the bolt slides part 3 cant wait. Good video thank you
Holy crap those Milwaukee die grinders must be handy!
Nice idea put into practical use
You are just so easy to watch, and my goto smith for helpful and interesting comment.. subbed here!
Looks great!
HI John nice latch I have seen a lot things made out of steel but when i see how you do it i am amazed you say your not a master YER OK well in Australia we say we are the JACK of all trades but masters of none hammer on master jack
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
I like your short handled tap. I'm always afraid I'm going to break things using the longer handle that is on my junk one.
Thank you...
Another good video. It was good to watch something like that come together. What kind of filler rod was used in the welding?
I just hope the cat can't reach the screws. They are some smart animals.
RG45 if I remember correctly. Bailing wire also work
One day my old dog was laying next to my anvil and i accidentally dropped a bar of hot iron on her and she made a bolt for the door 😉
Will, I’ll bet your old dog made that bolt faster than ole John did!
Unusual to see gas welding any more. Like your work.
Thank. I think gas feels like a better fit in forged work. But TIG would be as good if you ha e it.
Slide bolt looks great. Hopefully the cat don't learn the electric slide and open up the door. Just a little humor.
They’re pretty smart
Lol
Nice smithing!
great handle, is there version of this that would go on a door that is flush with the wall and opens out? Or do you just put the fancy handle on the other side for those? (closet door)
I’ll show that at some point. But for the most part it’s just a surface mounted keeper like the bolt slides it.
black bear forge keeping cats out and bears in sense 2019
Something is wrong with the lite you're kind of purple in the beginning of the video, great video by the way as always
Odd
We are going to address spring loaded bolts asson asthe cat figures out this one :-)
First
“As the Bolt Slides” doesn’t sound suitable for children 😀
Step away from the file! I promise, we won't think any less of you if you use a powered sanding tool.
