Awesome work as always John. Your FBI joke reminded me of something my dad taught me at a very young age: “Locks are only used to keep out the “honest” man.”
The real-life Ron Swanson. Thanks for sharing your awesome videos!
Love the " you can rewind the video and watch it 3 times if you want." Made me chuckle this morning lol
I’ll join the chorus of comments and wow what beautiful project. Thanks 😊
I can’t get over how cool all of your work is
Nice project! You have shown the usefulness of a blacksmith over and over. I think the only thing that limits you is your imagination
“Maybe you should think about what you’re keeping in your barn...” I literally laughed 😂 great video sir!
Glad you enjoyed!
Brilliant as always, thank you. It is most helpful seeing your occasional mistakes and how you recover from them, and I couldn't help chuckling at the uncharacteristic expletive at 6:08... it gives me hope :D
Enjoyed your humor! Another good video.
Fantastic! The star on the hasp is perfect.
That looks like me, good and sturdy and handsome too!
I would mount it with carriage bolts. I'd be proud to have that on my barn door. 🤜🤛
Great design idea right there!
I spit my coffee out at the FBI joke! :D
Now it makes sense to me. I really wasn't sure where this would end up. That is a nice looking lock!
Nice heavy door latch/lock now you need some hinges to match.
Coming up before too long I hope
Heavy duty, love it!
What Colvin said! That's what I want to learn/do.
Hallo John da hast du wieder mal eine fantastische Arbeit geleistet sehr hübsch und robust ein einmaliges Unikat und nichts langweiliges aus dem Geschäft👍🙂
I love this latch project John, one of my favourites and one that I’m saving to try myself
Great project and awesome work sir. Thank you
Thank you so much for your videos, i have learnt many useful things. I am 18 and about 2 months ago started practicing blacksmithing, got really interested in it. It was a bit hard for me to find or make myself everything i need for getting started. Your vids help me a lot to learn and get different ideas
Great project/video, thank you Sir.
Love this stuff! This is exactly the type of stuff I'm interesting in forging myself. While other channels make knives and swords, I'm so glad you're sticking to the classics: tools, hooks, latches, etc.
Thanks 👍
Thanks John, appreciate the fact you include the in between bits where things don’t always go right first time. This makes it a proper learning video and allows me to not make as many mistakes.
love this, nobody makes blacksmithing videos quite like you
John, this is a great looking door latch/bolt project. Thanks for sharing it with us!
That would work really good for the fence gates too, I'd bet.
Wow great job you are amazing man
Very nice hardware!
Real good to see and hear your explanation about why arc-weld vs riveting.
Definitely a good call to go with the forged keepers. The end result looks fantastic.
Great job John today I made a blacksmith rule just like you have
Good morning
Heavy security just slows them down. A Sawzall will cut it's own door beside the locked one! Nice project. ✌ 😃
Very nice John!
Beautiful work, John. You make it look easy with everything fitting up just right. Thanks for the tip, I am really putting thought into what I am storing in my barn. 🤣🤣🤣
Glad to help 😜
Καλημέρα.Πολυ ωραία ιδέα αυτή με τα διπλά κλειδώματα.Επισεις ωραία δουλειά.Συνχαρητηρια.
That is very beautiful work John you are a wonderful black smith that does amazing work thanks for all you do
Sure turned out nice John. Great video...
As a guy that grew up with an older brother I can tell you all kinds of reasons to make sure the door stays unlocked! Lol
Hello John
What a beauty. This lock looks very good and do their job .
To think of what we keep in our barn is a good idea 😉😉
I have a old house from 1883 and some of the doorlocks outside are forged and do their job since the building of my house .
The modern lock in my Maindoor i think i have changed it i think three times .
Take care stay healthy and have a good week
Yours Frank Galetzka
Great Job. Helps me to understand how things were done before welders etc. Thanks.
Good morning, happy to see you, I got an envil last week in the same style you are working on. Mine is from 1925 and a Bavarian type, the length is 1040 mm. This is now the biggest in my collection. I always enjoy watching your channel. Greetings from Germany / Hannover.
Jens
Excellent video. The latch looks fantastic.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you.
Really nice project and useful. great craftsmanship. Thanks.
Great job John 👍👍 really like the simple effectiveness of this Lock 🔒
Thanks 👍
Another great project, thanks.
Very nice John, perfect!
Turned out great! Thanks John!
Lots of fit and finish so much enjoy the video ( believe reminds me of DP in the Forge videos I so enjoyed his crafting).
Again you give us a test and the answer unless we copy we won't learn near as much.
Thanks for the teaching Sir, Yeah you are a hard act to follow
Love it
Very good work, well beyond my ability but sure enjoy watching you make these items. Impressive!
Awesome .I'd love a custom latch for my treasure chest. A chest for my silver and gold and platinum and gems and old coins.
Доброе утро ! Хорошая работа , я заметил что вы стараетесь мало использовать современные инструменты и придерживаетесь старых методов работы - что не часто встречается в наше время ! Всего хорошего !!!
Nice
You could use a small length of rod to "fill" the hole while peening the first tenon to prevent deforming it.
OUTSTANDING as always John, you have been my go-to smith for years,GOD BLESS.
This turned out very nice John. Hopefully you get great use out of it my friend. Can't wait to see more videos. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
Very nice door latch, can also be mounted in between two doors and works like a XOR gate
Awesome as usual John thanks for my Sunday morning relaxing time.
As the saying goes locks keep honest men honest
John, this was another great video. Great design and execution!! I like the bigger version like that. Old time forged work always looks good when it's large and obviously SOLID.
Hallo John it's always a pleasure to see you working! A nice piece that you made! Nice Video keep on!!👍🏻👍🏻
Good morning John, that was a lot of hammering and banging this early in the morning;-) Sure did enjoy it though and it turned out fantastic. Thanks for sharing with us. Stay safe up there. Fred.
Barn? Nah, this is for the outhouse!
That is a really good looking piece of hardware. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.
Thanks for watching!
Another great video John. I really like that you include us in your mistakes along the way. Keeps things real and helps to encourage me to forge on (pun intended) through the hurdles.
Good job I love the lock plate it was great to watch and the photography at the end looked great 👍
Nice
Thanks for the tips , I'll clean out my barn today.
This is on my project list, although my sketches had left the "kiss" methodology and I now had a much too difficult pattern to work with.
Thanks for bumping me out of my groove!
Looks great John, I may use a latch like that on my shop doors. Love the video. Thanks for the great content.
Funny rewind the video 😂👍😊
That’s a nice looking latch , super beefy that will keep out the unwanted for sure .
Awesome job, Mr. Switzer. I know your end of the year poll said that weapons tend to be most popular on here, but I always enjoy the intricacies of something with moving parts.
Also loved the FBI comment... 😂
Always a pleasure to watch u. I enjoy you the best out of the other.
Very nice work sir, thank you.👏
What a gorgeous project! And for me, I never have a problem if you decide to use modern or traditional methods to get the job done, unless you're restoring some heirloom piece just do whatever work!
You did a very good job, keep it up. Beautiful result 💪👍
What is that contraption you use to light your oxy/acetylene torch?? I’m a welder and I use a torch every day, I would love to find out how you’re lighting it that quickly and with one hand.
Thank you!! Love your content, I’m a beginner blacksmith and have learned so much from you. Keep it up!
Its a gas saver. Fuel and oxygen in with a shut off you hang the torch from and a pilot light. Mine is made by Smith.
Thank you! I think you could call the door latch project thinks "Things Rustic"
You got me thinking I should clean out my barn. LOL just kidding. Nice work, thank you for sharing.
That latch turned out great John, i could definitely see a smaller version on a cabin door or other rustic building.
Would it be possible it divot or sink the plate so the rivets lay flat on the door? Great work!
Flush rivets in the thin mounting plate wouldn't be as strong. But with a thicker plat it would work
Great work at the anvil one video and with your video editing! I watch every video even if I’m not going to do the project - I always learn something!
Thank you!
Good carriage bolts with hammer marks will stop them
Hallo John, I like your autentic way. Could you give me some infortmations about double valve between oxygen/acetilene bombs and burner, which extinguishes and re-ignites the flame? Type, manufacturer , ... ?
Thats a gas saver valve. Mine is made by Smith
Good job . Some times it's best to use all the technology we have available to us . I do like old fashioned way however for fit and finish or just don't want it to rattle your ears off
Security? Just use a double keeper with a longer bolt.
How come you spent so much time filing the tenons? I would of thought you would get it close and then heat in forge and hammer it in? Just curious! Thanks!
That can work. but it can also lead to distortion and others complications
6:08 he swore lol
Stinkin feds !!!? 😬😬😬
You know that you know you screwed up when you leave the swearing in the audio 🤣. At least it was a small mistake that was easy to fix. Great looking piece, John, and a really fun video to watch.
Love your videos. What were you cursing about at the treadle hammer? I don’t see anything wrong.
Sorry John, I enjoy your work but not enough to watch parts 3 times :)
@0:30 to @5:10 three times was a bit tedius. Sometimes it is hard to follow instructions.
I might be the only one who thinks this but I think Blacksmithing is a lost art
👍👍👍👍☕☕🍩🍩
Hi John, very nice project, really beautiful..... When the FBI comes... LOL. But I've a question. Can you please tell me what the size of your dies in the blacksmith magician is (l x w x h). In Europe it's hard to find the blacksmith magician.
roughly 20 x 50 x 100mm. But these are made in so many variations you can do just about anything to suit your needs. Finding a readily available stock size for the dies then making the tool to fit is a good way to go.
@@BlackBearForge Thank you John, this is really helpfull!
6:07 😂😂😂
Did you say a bad word at 6:08? 🤣 if you did, I’m glad I’m not the only one…. 😂. I forgive ya!
