  • Set in the remote and rugged landscapes of Te Urewera, the Lake Waikaremoana Track had us spellbound when we stepped into it in January 2021 (with our comfy Altra Timp 2's).
    Total distance: 46km
    Total elevation: +1,510m / -1,489m
    Total time: 10.5hrs
Elevation figures are approximate based on my GPS watch.
Te Urewera National Park protects the largest area of native forest remaining in the North Island. The mountainous region was granted legal personhood in 2014 by NZ, the first country to do so for a natural feature!
Since then, Aotearoa has granted legal personality rights to two others: Whanganui Awa (Whanganui River) and Taranaki Maunga (Mount Taranaki) meaning they have the same legal status as an individual person.

We took about 8 hours in total (for context, we generally take half the recommended duration). Hope this helps.

Did you stay at the hut or water taxi there each day?

Hi there! Neither. We covered the entire route in a single day :)

@@LadyExplorer Wow! The whole Great Walk? We did a little lake close to Waikaremoana and stayed at the hut. We were thinking of staying at the Holiday Park and taking the water taxi to do sections.
