Well, they don't have the ability to control our minds, but they are very skilled at deception and instilling fear. It is more difficult for them to influence Sovereign people who do not respond to fear in the way they expect.
Many people say that the natural response to fear is "fight, flight, freeze or fawn", but when I was a kid playing hide and seek, my response was always "freak". I would just freak out when the "it" person got close to tagging me. I think I still respond in the same way.
