    Thanks Mads and Ava for some great DIY p#rn..🎉 I saw the excitement on your cheeks.😊😊 And..38-FOOTers RULE!!!! I say as an owner of and live on a Chiquita 38 2 mast cabin sailboat named "'t Boegskip". So please..I know I know..sometimes more space of a 50 footer or even 60 seems so pleasant and usefull when have guests or enlarge your own family one day with mini me's..but keep a close eye on the disadvantages..so please stick to your 38 foot DIY beauty Athena!!❤🙏 When you take good care of her she will take good care of you!! And you see, she needs enough DIY more often than not.😅 And..with your skills and creativity..you can do enough DIY projects for and on boats of other skippers around you. But I understand the need for a bigger boat sometimes too. I have enlarged family soon due to new relationship and with two kids and possibly a third in the future, 38 feet does get a bit small. I was also looking at bigger boats, 45, 50 and even 60-footers. But with advantages of bigger also come many disadvantages, demurrage, maintenance, draft, manoeuvring, boat lift, on shore...and especially here in the Netherlands and its beautiful..but not always very deep..inland waters. Weighing and weighing...until my brain this morning in the toilet...haha often the place for new discoveries, solutions and visions...came up with the solution!!...a smaller second boat next to it!!! The eldest is already 14 and while pubescent would rather have a place to himself than hoarded in the 38-footer with his brother and parents. And...even a 38-footer is already big here in Dutch conditions, so we can now get to more places and sail faster and easier with the small boat...day/weekend trips...and...during the holiday period...when son dear is on holiday elsewhere...I can then possibly rent out that smaller boat within my (future) business. The disadvantages of an extra but smaller boat relatively and no more than larger boat. So TADDAAAAA!!! And maybe another one.. so become admiral of my own squadron one day😅😊🎉

    I like the plastic covering on the travel lift straps. My boat's perfectly clean white topsides have blue marks from the lift out this year. Don't forget to keep the washboards to hand, they are vital for stormy conditions, the doors are lovely but won't halt a wave.

    Mads, the way they put Athens on the hard is the standard for how its done in the states- with the exception of the guy going in the water- I transport boats for a living, and I've never seen anyone in the water- I'm pretty sure that was done for RUclips. Just make sure they put chains between opposing stands so they don't wander if the sandy ground washes out

    I often watch a RUclips channel by Pacific Yacht Systems and on it they've suggested that you cannot use a Inverter/Charger combo outside it native voltage and frequency. I thought it was interesting that yours worked at all on 60hz and wonder if that is masking a problem? That same youtube channel explained a way around the issue is to use a sperate charger and a separate inverter. The stand alone inverter would always work off batteries so no issue. Again according to PYS stand alone chargers are designed to work on 110/240VAC, 60/50hz. A possible remedy might be to wire in a small second stand alone charger on Shore power and disconnect the inverter/charger combo from shore power. Love to watch you guys solve interesting problems

    We had a similar experience on our Hans Christian 48T, Bravura. Never felt we needed a/c until Trinidad. Then is wasn't an option but a necessary addition. First, we rented a hatch a/c unit then went out and bought a 16,000 BTU unit locally . The installation was straight forward but the cost of the March pump was surprising. Within days we had a/c throughout the boat but it we closed off the walk-in workshop and quarter cabin to make cooling easier. Later I added a 5,000 BTU to the sleeping cabin. I continued to live in the Caribbean for the next 14 years and used the a/c daily. If you are going to sail/live in Mexico or the Caribbean I strongly recommend adding a/c to your vessel.
    I was aboard my recently acquired Contest 38s this month and it was 42C / 108F belowdecks; unbearable. I quickly purchased a 12,000 BTU Webasto unit and will install it when I return in October. I've never experienced heat like that in August in the BVIs. Global warming is real and upon us.

      Actually it's an El Nino after 4 successive years of La Nina's, which may well turn out to be a Super El Nino as a result. This is all Down to the Coincidence of Various Duration Solar Cycles, and as this is also Coincinding with the Star of the Extended Grand Solar Minimum Cooling Period that NASA Warned was approaching a few years ago, results of all this may get very interesting indeed. In fact, given Autumn has arrived about two months early, marked by very large flights of Geese and Ducks heading South, and it has been so Cold in Britain for the past month, I've had to have the Oil Fired Heating on in the Morning and evenings, plus the Apples on the Apple Tree in the Garden have Riped over a Month Early, and things may well be pointing in some parts of the World to an early and long Cold Winter. Earth QC Channel on RUclips is keeping a very close eye on how this El Nino is going to be shaping up. Me ? No way would I consider the Traditional West to East North Atlantic Crossing via the Azores right now, until the shape of things starts being better to see how things are progressing. Best Wishes. Bob. ✨️✨️✨️

    The Jackstands and the trailer are all the invention of the late Fred Brownell from brownell boat works in Mattapoisett Mass. These are very common all over the world. Use a chain between the stands port and starboard. They can be moved and augmented to touch up the bottoms under the pads. These are still made in their factories.

    Mads - nice job on that door - really. However, it occurred to me that your "boat" is looking more like a house all the time - with the washer and dryer, electric stove/oven, etc., etc. Great episode - thanks much.

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 11 месяцев назад

      Good points regarding washer dryer, electric hobs and ovens. I've been revisiting what is needed for my next Sailboat, as I am trying to avoid Having to have a built in Generator. This is proving to be more problematic than I expected, and I just can't see how an all electric Gallsy is at all feasible without a large diesel Generator for backup tbh, . Aft Cockpit Arch on the monohull (I just can't live with the motion of Catamarans, as they totally mess me up, or more Solar wouldn't be a problem) should be able to fit 1,000 Watts of Solar power, and the inboard diesel can handle a high output alternator easily, so I'm pretty sure a Washer/Dryer - important for hygiene in the Tropics, can just about Squeezed in, If I stick to Propane for cooking, but with a portable induction hob to help cut the amount of cooking gas used. Not having a built in Diesel Generator should help to run the inboard diesel engine under load regularly enough to help keep it in tip top Condition as well. But running a 12v Watermaker And 12v Air Conditioning as well as a Refrigerator and Freezer ? Add in eing very dissatisfied with Lithim Batteries - over promising, under delivering, and far from cheap, with poor service life, and I'm feeling like I'm trying to get a quart out of a pint pot tbh, without a built in Diesel Generator. It could be worse, it's only a bit depressing. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

    If you haven't yet found a better handle, take the round one off the dead bolt. I suspect it fits the same size square shaft, then see if you can get matching knobs from the manufacturer, or perhaps take it to your striker shop and get him to make matching knobs.

  • @aserta

    13:58 with consideration given to the gap, i'd put a piece of brass all along the top side of the "door" both to reinforce the wood and stop it from being jacked by anyone, because as is, it can be opened very easily. I know it's all a trust exercise, but it would improve the whole situation a little bit. The brass wouldn't rust or cause other issues, but it would be sturdy enough for the job and brass always looks good.
    That said, were i you, i'd make a hood that hooks over this entrance on the top and secures at the bottom somehow for extended leaves from the boat. In day to day use, you could store it inside one of the technical compartments flat against the hull. jm2c

    Mads fellow sw eng here, I have been watching you since the very beginning, thanks for sharing these videos, you where actually the 1rst DIY boating channel I saw and got hooked since!, Quick question since I dont have a boat yet and I am a total noob when it comes to this. Why do you plan to raise the water line? (I imagine because you guys have bought more stuff and the boat is heavier, but whats the point?, why raise it, for better protection?), and a follow up question; until "when" is safe to increase / decrease the waterline, does the manufacturer of the boat gives you an interval where its safe to move the waterline or how does it works?.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ahoy :) Weight on a boat is indeed important. We’re probably as heavy as we’re going to get. The waterline is still a good distance away from the water but now that we’re anchoring more the boat rocks more that motion causes water to go above our current waterline. There’s nothing really wrong with that except for the growth on the topsides. Raising the waterline is purely a cosmetic thing to avoid green growth on the white hull :)

    Not a big problem as you have an auto-flush, but for sailors that use a lot of sodium metabisulphite, you can buy this at most supermarkets or chemists - used for baby bottle cleaning, home brew kits etc. About 1/10 the cost that you pay from a water maker manufacturer. We have similar problems with our waterline. We put it down to global warming as we constantly need to raise it.

    It would take a lot longer than your first year or two in the water for any evidence of osmosis to occur, at least more than 2 but possibly about 5. Still, that is likely never to happen on Athena again because your osmosis treatment was so detailed. Most people who have reoccurring osmosis after a 'professional' treatment isn't because of the epoxy barrier coating that was added, its because they didn't thouroughly remove existing moisture that was already deep in the laminate. I've been with you since the beggining of Athena's restoration and I'm about 1000% sure you made sure all the moisture was out and you have a bomb-proof epoxy outer hull.

I would have thought the washer was the issue. Perhaps a stepddown transformer or run those specific appliances off a inverter. Not cheap regardless. Good luck.

      I'm wondering about the electrical issue too. But I'm wondering if it has to do with that they might have an inverter/charger unit rather than the a stand alone charger and stand alone inverter? The later configuration should work because a stand alone inverter would only see only battery voltage and almost all stand alone chargers work on 110/240 60/50 system. If they have the inverter/charger system I'm sort of surprised it works and wondering if that is actually a problem that it does. A work around would be not to power though the inverter/charger and to add second stand alone smart charger. Then put 220/60 to just the stand alone charger and put no power to the inverter/charger. I've been thinking about foreign boat travel and after watching lots of RUclips videos I think that a Isolation Transformer to stand alone smart charger feeding directly to the battery bank is best option for various voltages and frequencies

    • @mckenziekeith7434

      I think if I were fitting out a boat I would set it up with a separate charger and inverter and no pass-through. The charger would be 120/240 50/60 Hz. And the inverter would generate 60 Hz only (for me because I live in the US). Of course 50 Hz people could set it up for 50 Hz instead.

      @@mckenziekeith7434 I agree separate charger and separate inverter is the way to go provided you have the luxury of room to do so. Add in a Isolation Transformer for good world travel protection with a input breaker on 240 and a different one on 110; for me that would probably make comfortable with pass through.

      It's water cooled so can't be used when the boat is out of the water.

    This channel has no other type of content besides DIY. Sure, in Heck, isn't a sailing channel, that's for sure.
