Been watching Sail life for a long time, I love it. Swapping from a diy to a sail/history channel/diy has made you channel even better. You are letting us see, teach us history’s of areas that most of us will never see. THANK YOU! Look for you guys every Sunday.
Always look forward to Ava’s interpretations. We learns something every week! (Barge cement would repair your boots Mads. 😎) LOVE you folks!!! It’s just not Sunday without you. 💕💕💕💕💕
Another great video Maz and Ava!! 🙏 For those of us who don't have room for a washer and dryer... a spinner and dehumidifier work a treat to keep us clean and dry.
I just loved Ava's commentary about the history of the area. If teachers taught like that, kids would surly learn. Mad's explanations of the different operating systems aboard the boat are educational. 🙂
Thanks for the “Electricity Management for Doohickies” breakdown. After reading through your list of things to do in Lisbon, I am going to guess it takes you at least three weeks. Looking forward to the AC and windvane install videos. Until next week, Sea Yoo !
What an amazing team you both are! A perfect blend of technical DIY and Story telling. Was just in Porto and Lisbon last week, Ava is going to Love the unbelievable history and there are plenty of old ruins for Mads to admire.
Generally, I tune in for some DYI and sailing, but this episode had some serious Ninja moves. Better stay on your toes Mads and sleep with one eye open.
Ava reminded me of my lessons when I taught 5th grade and one year I told the kids that Magellan came in first place in a spear catching contest during the his voyage. Love your videos!!
As much as I enjoy the technical and DIY, Ava adds so much more with the history and travel log portion. As always, I look forward to your weekly videos.
Fun Video guys. I think Ava had a great idea to go scuba diving looking for treasure ! the little history insights are really interesting. Thanks for doing this
Passed through my hometown Aveiro, it was a good port to stop and know some things about shipbuilding and cod fishing, good winds and continuation of a good trip.
I love all your doohickies and the anticipation of near certain failures provides a unique level of suspense to your vlog. In fact, I hope you keep finding gadgets you HAVE to have because eventually we'll get to see you diy another, bigger of course, boat!!
I use the same boots as my military boots. They are great and Hanwag has excellent customer service. Your boots suffered from hydrolysis, the PU midsole got wet and over time a chemical process will age your boots. Hanwag can replace midsoles and it should be alot cheaper than buying new ones and additionally your boots are already broken in so they fit your foot perfectly. I wore mine daily for 7 years now and had them resoled at Hanwag. Took about 2 weeks. They also replaced some Hardware. All in all it was very good and also pretty cheap.
Those were quite the moves Ava. Made me giggle. Thank you for the history lesson on the bay Ava and thank you Mads for the technical coverage. Perfect video-some history education and technical training. Have a good week guys.
Normally a Sunday viewer but didn't get around to you until today (Monday) and have to say that your cheerful videos always put me in a better mood. Thanks for the lift.
Ok Mad's an Ava I adore you both... You Ava had me cracking up girly.. Mads that is a very small amount of Diesel used..an the sun still came thru... seriously I really dig how you've both gotten everything set up an organized... Athena is really providing a splendid home to explore an adventure to amazing places in history. To share the wisdom an history an be funny too!!! Well loves you both cheer me up every week!! Thanks again for sharing your lives with us ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Well worth dropping into Viana do Castelo (it’s the first place you can stop once in Portugal) it’s a wonderful town, really beautiful, get the funicular railway up to the cathedral on the hill (you will see it from the sea as you pass) it’s wonderful for the views. Have fun guys, wish I was doing it again but back to work for now.
I suppose I’m one of those who thinks you have too much gadgetry on Athena, but my sense is the overload is in on the techy side, not on creature comforts. Cruising full time is not camping. There’s no need to sacrifice one’s basic needs such as keeping clean, staying warm or easily making terrific food. I’m jealous of all the amenities you have on your boat that make cruising more comfortable, and the infrastructure you’ve built to power it. My vessel is smaller (Bayfield 32c) and I must live with space constraints but I’d like to make my cruising life a bit more comfortable as you have with yours. My sense you have no need to apologize for having a washer/dryer or other amenities. Nor should you apologize for supplementing what appears to be a very efficient solar system with “Dinosaur Squeezings”, after a succession of cloudy days. I have a meagre 360 watts of solar and 240 total ah of lead acid battery reserve and I know what it’s like to be an amp ogre during the rainy season here in the Pacific Northwest. For Ava I like your presentation style. Your exuberance is a joy to watch.
HI Guys, our 5000i experiences very similar. Live-aboard with modern conveniences running genset 1-2 hours per day charging those big yellow Winston Lithium batteries. Genset & Volvo use same oil but not same antifreeze which is a shame; had some correspondence with Fischer Panda on subject. Would like to have used genset waste heat in calorifier circuit somehow but more complicated if antifreezes incompatible. We also installed an additional 100A (@12V) battery charger to max-out genset to 3.5kW when just charging batteries which brought our run-hours down by almost a third. Thanks for another great video!
Hi Mads, when you replace the boots, avoid any that have EVO foam between the boot and the sole. They will never last. It is a designed in obsolescence feature.
You folks doing great. Love checking in every week for yet another great video. I my not be the world traveler, but love Eva’s history lessons of your travel’s.
Great insight! Have you been considering additional methods of creating power? Like wind, waves etc? I bet there might be a lot of diy-fun to explore… 😅
Love Ava's inclusion of regional history! Always learning something new is great! Mads, you've always been very efficient in the consumption of "dinosaur squeezings". 🦣
Far out! You've got all the gadgets and gismos! Starlink, epropultion etc. I recently found your channel while looking for advice on filling and fairing the hull. I'm building A Farrier F22 Trimaran and I'm pretty well up to filling and fairing the main hull. I've watched these videos and also the rudder rebuild videos. They are very interesting and informative!
I am glad Eva kept the battle of the Dutch against the Spanish and French light without any gruesome details while I am enjoying you guys for breakfast. Great job as always. LOL pretty spiffy trading route.
Hi , I bumped into old mate from years back and he seemed to have a extra hump on his back .? Tortoise replied , things move on and that is my new washing machine for my smalls , time moves on . Another very interesting video .😉
The island looked interesting.. though it might not be public access... November is dark times for solar in the UK.. I need to run my generator every 2 days.. I'm just about to fit the first of 2 wind turbines.. I'm surprised it's similar for you...
Great video and I agree…living on a relatively small boat, some creature comforts make it more enjoyable. And my goodness, you are so organized, well done.
Hey Mads, when you leave Porto, it might be of interest, plan a stop in "Aveiro" known as the "Venice of Portugal", full of history related to cod fishing and making salt! If you need something I'm glad to help.
Great content. I first found you while researching my sailboat power upgrade. That hooked me. Your excellent engineering and terrific videos are a weekly “must see” RUclips. I went for a big (5kW) alternator/Wakespeed with more storage/dual inverters instead of the genset. Your experience with the REC BMS almost convinced me to go home made LFP batteries. Big solar is next (year). 🤞 Do you share your VRM? For us geeks/local cruisers/future cruisers, it would be very informative. BTW, Ava was more right than the editor’s “*East Indies” correction. Columbus “discovered” the West Indies in 1492 and the Spanish/French fleet at the Battle of the Rande (Vigo Bay) was protecting the silver fleet which sailed from the West Indies…just sayin😁
Mads: For any internal combustion engine, the oil deteriorates over time, whether or not you use said engine regularly. My resources recommend oil changes every 6 months no matter how much you use the engine. I used to do an oil and filter change on my diesel twice yearly. This may cost more but is well worth it in terms of engine longevity. Fair winds, Skipper!
That’s funny when I do oil analysis oil doesn’t wear out or go bad with time. . It’s the addictive package, soot and silica. A time is ok but do a oil analysis you might be dumping good oil. Do oil analysis then you know with facts not what someone tells you. Be blessed
I wasn't financial free until my 40's and I'm still in my 40's, bought my third house already, earn on a monthly through passive income, and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn't matter if you don't have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! look her up on the internet with her name. she's quite popular for her services as she was recently featured on CNN. She can work with anyone irrespective of where you're located
I wouldn't complain about your power usage. Down in South Florida we ran the generator about 2 hours a night with 1280 watts of solar. In our case we use WAY too much power, and I really need to get on top of cleaning our solar panels more. Our best is 9kwh from solar, and I still had to run the generator. But that's because we also kicked on an air conditioner for half the day.
Thanks you for the information about your energy system and consumption! At the end do you regret installing electric induction stove and electric dinghy motor?
Really..... Diesel? Orrrr, did you intend to say, "Dinosaur Squeezings." On another note, I recently received news here in the frozen Canadian North country, of a Beneteau Oceanis 393 being "sunk" by the Orca's off Portugal in the 2nd week of November. Take care and best of luck.
Does the genset have a heat exchanger which heats your hot water? I'm guessing that would be complex plumbing... but would be another energy win if possible....
Noticed earlier that the anchor chain swivel was fitted directly on the anchor. Is it a good idea to have a small length of chain between anchor and swivel? So when the boat swing, the awivel will not get sideway tugging.. God tur videre
Washing machine (and dryer) is an absolute necessity for long term living. If you don't agree, wash the clothes for the whole family in a bucket for a year.

Doing wash in the shower or sink is fine for a long weekend. But if I want a HOME that sails, I'd also want the laundry service. If I wanted to travel light... I've travelled with a head or galley too. And it gets tired fast. I understand some of those washers can take 10 more fresh water than others?
Not too many doo-hickies, but not enough lithium! It's gotten a lot cheaper. I'd guess you need at least 12kwh. It's not as crazy as as it sounds or used to be. 16kw would be brilliant.
Energy management... just curious: when you run the genset, are you sizing the load to put it into its best efficiency range, e.g. 75%? Because AFAIK, the washing machine isn't using all that much on average. So you could be charging the batteries (how much does the charger draw?), do laundry, run the watermaker, cook a hot meal, ..., while (hopefully) running the genset for as short as possible (saving fuel and keeping the noise to a minimum).
Ava's historical description of the battle of Vigo was so funny. Cheers.
Don't worry about what other people think, this is you're adventure. So enjoy.
Exactly. I'm sick of watching various youtubers being apologetic just to maintain subs.
Yes!! What he said! You don't have to please the hard to please types!
Amen to that!
I've never discovered any joy in sitting in a hot and sweaty local laundromat, so I'm 100% with you with installing a washing machine and drier.

"But these boots - nothing wrong with 'em" Hahaha Thanks Ava for my laugh of the day.
Another great video Maz and Ava!! 🙏 For those of us who don't have room for a washer and dryer... a spinner and dehumidifier work a treat to keep us clean and dry.
What a great episode....... Ava's storytelling was outstanding.......long time viewer here and I love the channel
I love the new sailing and diy mix... The transition was seamless... Why it's more fun than " o glorious sanding".

Sweet karate moves Ava. Never stress about your energy use Mads, you are the most efficient and conscientious man in the water. 👍👍💖⛵🙏

Spiffy doesn't even describe a washer and dryer on a boat , and solar options . Haters will be haters . You've built an amazing home .
Fun Video guys. I think Ava had a great idea to go scuba diving looking for treasure ! the little history insights are really interesting. Thanks for doing this
Love your explanation of energy management and even your hike and historical significance of the bay you are anchored in.

Nice history lesson Ava. Mads ,du er jo en DIY expert. Held og lykke til jer begge to!

Well I got my Sail Life fix and got to see some of Ava’s awesome footwork..pow!
Thanks for the history lesson.
The small comforts are worth it.

We have another History Maven in Ava. You have to love getting a brief history of the area you just sailed into and landed on.
Ava has a future as a history teacher. She puts some pizazz in her lectures...and 13:56 literally made me LOL. 😄
Nothin wrong with those boots.
how cool is it to hear what sounds like a jet turbine winding up in the background at about 6:50! Alas, only the washing machine 😁
I agree 100 percent. The more conveniences the better
I agree with you about living with a little bit of comfort.
We enjoy the creature comforts here at home. Eternal camping would not be in our plans. Occasionally, sure.
Thank you 🤗

That generator is worth bragging about how quiet it is. SO nice. 3 GALLONS!@ Amazing fuel savings on that gen.
hey Mads, you better check that wash programme - ain't gonna get stuff cleaned with a 12 minute cold water cycle !
Love Ava's inclusion of regional history! Always learning something new is great!
Mads, you've always been very efficient in the consumption of "dinosaur squeezings". 🦣
Man you are doing a great job, love the informative videos.
Love the history as told by Ava.

Regardless of what anyone thinks you and your beautiful wife's comfort level is more important than anything else.
I love you both as a couple!
Very cute episode guys ‼️ First time here. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝👙🌞✨

While it’s raining can you do that doo hickey thingy at the bottom of the grab pole next to your nav station? 😂
Great video guy’s ❤
Show. O teu barco é muito legal.
Parabéns!
I am glad Eva kept the battle of the Dutch against the Spanish and French light without any gruesome details while I am enjoying you guys for breakfast. Great job as always.

Hi , I bumped into old mate from years back and he seemed to have a extra hump on his back .? Tortoise replied , things move on and that is my new washing machine for my smalls , time moves on . Another very interesting video .😉
Great job defending all your electrical devices. If more people would simply manage their power use this world would be a better place.
What? Viewing this on a Tuesday??? It's almost illegal I am sorry I missed it Sunday. Best wishes both of you
Ahoy Mads
Sikaflex (if you have onboard) in any polyurethane configuration will bond those boot soles back into operation.
Cheers
Capt'n Ron
The island looked interesting.. though it might not be public access...
November is dark times for solar in the UK.. I need to run my generator every 2 days.. I'm just about to fit the first of 2 wind turbines..
I'm surprised it's similar for you...
Great video and I agree…living on a relatively small boat, some creature comforts make it more enjoyable. And my goodness, you are so organized, well done.
Say Hi to yacht Magnet at the marina San Adrian. They are just back from the Atlantic circuit.
Hey Mads, when you leave Porto, it might be of interest, plan a stop in "Aveiro" known as the "Venice of Portugal", full of history related to cod fishing and making salt!
If you need something I'm glad to help.
Diesel is far cleaner and less polluting and more efficient and easier to make (less processing) than gas. Ignore the haters.
Do you share your VRM? For us geeks/local cruisers/future cruisers, it would be very informative.

Loved the history lesson😃
watched this episode at my shop with my mergull sitting next to me. she asked me to say hi!
Hey, Try & PL(r)AY - the song "Weather with You" - Crowded house. May the sun shine & put in the KWts. Cheers.

I just looked up this person out of curiosity; surprisingly, she seems proficient. I thought this was just some overrated BS, I appreciate this.
great video update. stay safe and have a great week ahead. see you folks on the next video
Take care guys

Really.....
Mads, you and Eva are such a cute couple.
Tilting the solar panels would help some.....not just "looking" straight up. (mornings / evenings) Of course would need some " DIY " again. (of course not usable when sailing...boom will be in the way)
Doing wash in the shower or sink is fine for a long weekend. But if I want a HOME that sails, I'd also want the laundry service. If I wanted to travel light... I've travelled with a head or galley too. And it gets tired fast.
I understand some of those washers can take 10 more fresh water than others?
You should cover that on deck Garmin with something. I know it's water proof but... Well i made my point. Maybe Athena needs a dodger.
Not too many doo-hickies, but not enough lithium! It's gotten a lot cheaper. I'd guess you need at least 12kwh. It's not as crazy as as it sounds or used to be. 16kw would be brilliant.
Stay safe and may the wind be at your back.
Mads i guess your boots weren't made for walking, I guess they won't do, you tried to go walking and now you're screwed. 😂 🎶
I love Ava, she’s a badass and does a mean shuffle dance!
lol
Energy management... just curious: when you run the genset, are you sizing the load to put it into its best efficiency range, e.g. 75%?
Because AFAIK, the washing machine isn't using all that much on average. So you could be charging the batteries (how much does the charger draw?), do laundry, run the watermaker, cook a hot meal, ..., while (hopefully) running the genset for as short as possible (saving fuel and keeping the noise to a minimum).
Now in Portugal ... Just next to Lisbon ( Oieras ) :) Will leave soon.....will miss the chance of seeing you. :)
