    I use the same boots as my military boots. They are great and Hanwag has excellent customer service. Your boots suffered from hydrolysis, the PU midsole got wet and over time a chemical process will age your boots. Hanwag can replace midsoles and it should be alot cheaper than buying new ones and additionally your boots are already broken in so they fit your foot perfectly.
    I wore mine daily for 7 years now and had them resoled at Hanwag. Took about 2 weeks. They also replaced some Hardware. All in all it was very good and also pretty cheap.

    Well worth dropping into Viana do Castelo (it’s the first place you can stop once in Portugal) it’s a wonderful town, really beautiful, get the funicular railway up to the cathedral on the hill (you will see it from the sea as you pass) it’s wonderful for the views. Have fun guys, wish I was doing it again but back to work for now.

  • @donb4386
    @donb4386 2 года назад

    I suppose I’m one of those who thinks you have too much gadgetry on Athena, but my sense is the overload is in on the techy side, not on creature comforts.
    Cruising full time is not camping. There’s no need to sacrifice one’s basic needs such as keeping clean, staying warm or easily making terrific food. I’m jealous of all the amenities you have on your boat that make cruising more comfortable, and the infrastructure you’ve built to power it. My vessel is smaller (Bayfield 32c) and I must live with space constraints but I’d like to make my cruising life a bit more comfortable as you have with yours.
    My sense you have no need to apologize for having a washer/dryer or other amenities. Nor should you apologize for supplementing what appears to be a very efficient solar system with “Dinosaur Squeezings”, after a succession of cloudy days. I have a meagre 360 watts of solar and 240 total ah of lead acid battery reserve and I know what it’s like to be an amp ogre during the rainy season here in the Pacific Northwest.
    For Ava I like your presentation style. Your exuberance is a joy to watch.

    HI Guys, our 5000i experiences very similar. Live-aboard with modern conveniences running genset 1-2 hours per day charging those big yellow Winston Lithium batteries. Genset & Volvo use same oil but not same antifreeze which is a shame; had some correspondence with Fischer Panda on subject. Would like to have used genset waste heat in calorifier circuit somehow but more complicated if antifreezes incompatible. We also installed an additional 100A (@12V) battery charger to max-out genset to 3.5kW when just charging batteries which brought our run-hours down by almost a third. Thanks for another great video!

    Great content. I first found you while researching my sailboat power upgrade. That hooked me. Your excellent engineering and terrific videos are a weekly “must see” RUclips.
    I went for a big (5kW) alternator/Wakespeed with more storage/dual inverters instead of the genset. Your experience with the REC BMS almost convinced me to go home made LFP batteries. Big solar is next (year). 🤞
    Do you share your VRM? For us geeks/local cruisers/future cruisers, it would be very informative.
    BTW, Ava was more right than the editor’s “*East Indies” correction. Columbus “discovered” the West Indies in 1492 and the Spanish/French fleet at the Battle of the Rande (Vigo Bay) was protecting the silver fleet which sailed from the West Indies…just sayin😁

    Mads: For any internal combustion engine, the oil deteriorates over time, whether or not you use said engine regularly. My resources recommend oil changes every 6 months no matter how much you use the engine. I used to do an oil and filter change on my diesel twice yearly. This may cost more but is well worth it in terms of engine longevity. Fair winds, Skipper!

    I wouldn't complain about your power usage. Down in South Florida we ran the generator about 2 hours a night with 1280 watts of solar. In our case we use WAY too much power, and I really need to get on top of cleaning our solar panels more. Our best is 9kwh from solar, and I still had to run the generator. But that's because we also kicked on an air conditioner for half the day.

    Energy management... just curious: when you run the genset, are you sizing the load to put it into its best efficiency range, e.g. 75%?
    Because AFAIK, the washing machine isn't using all that much on average. So you could be charging the batteries (how much does the charger draw?), do laundry, run the watermaker, cook a hot meal, ..., while (hopefully) running the genset for as short as possible (saving fuel and keeping the noise to a minimum).
