I only take issue with the "seems more responsive to users" part. Like how? They removed the downvote, cluttered the subscription pane with shorts, upcoming, and lives, with no ability to hide the windings. Have zero accountability when someone reports a channel or content that clearly violates ToS, or even laws. Has ZERO people in the end user support department to the point you have to @ them on Twitter to find out why something is wrong. They have an entire subreddit, that they don't even use to listen to the users of this platform. I think that's RUclips's #1 problem. The other is, RUclips isn't directly facilitating the rest of this experience you're having. You, me, and everyone else in-between is. They've made a space for it to happen, but that's like saying your landlord is the one to thank for the party you threw last night. Even though you picked the music, brought the drinks, invited the guests, and made sure everyone was having a good time.

It's also about attention investment. TV Shows and movies require more time to watch than creator content. You have to be actively watching for an hour or 8 hours. It always felt daunting to pick a show cause what if it sucks by the end. For RUclips videos, even the hour plus ones, can range from thought provoking to background sound.

Companies aren't our friends, but I genuinely appreciate RUclips for being a huge platform for independent voices. There's nowhere else to find such a wide range of content from such a wide range of sources. And the quality of the 'best content' in any individual niche is only getting better with time. There's no board of shareholders telling my favorite video game theory channel what to make. And if that creator has to stop making videos, there's nothing stopping someone else from posting videos on the same topic and becoming my new favorite. It feels endless in a good way.

I also think one of RUclips's golden chickens laying the gold eggs right now would be the quality free movies RUclips is pushing now. Especially lots of great movies many of these streaming platforms currently don't have. Now add all the other video content youtube offers like recaps, tutorials, actor biographies and so on. You get really a lot of mediocre video content when you give permission to all users, but you will also get unique dope content when any creator can just upload on RUclips and not having to get their script/idea rejected by the streaming giants.

RUclips will keep on winning. It's viewers MAKE the content for it and at hardly any expense to Alphabet/RUclips itself. Yeah it only has 80m premium subscribers now but as other streaming services inevitably die down RUclips will keep on growing. Young kids don't spend their time watching lots of Netflix but they do adore RUclips so the future is already pro-RUclips. Alphabet doesn't need to worry that RUclips "only" has 80m premium subscribers because that will naturally grow while Netflix and all other streaming services struggle and it's customers aren't just people relaxing at home but basically anyone who needs a video for any topic ever - and no one cares about watching ads before a video when it's at work.

    • @MartijnPennings

This is a very under-emphasized point in this discussion I think. People here talk about RUclips as if it's just another streaming service among the others. But streaming services have to put millions into making or procuring shows and films, RUclips relies on the creators themselves fighting for viewership, so naturally the content is almost endless and the "best" content (whether quality or viewership) will flow to the top and garner even more views.

It's should be noted that RUclips is very hard to monetize compared to Netflix and other straming services. If people not used to pay for sevice - it's hard to make them do so. Also it is much cheaper for Netflix to store their data compared to RUclips, for obvious reasons. That's why RUclips's net worth is 7 times less than Netflix's while having much bigger user base. It became unattractively expensive to have streaming subscription for meaningfully sized library. I would pay 200$/year for streaming service if it will incorporate all movies I want to watch over year, but not 5x 120-150$/year services that in sum don't contain even 50% of them (because well, you have to buy them separately or because someone decided to sell it to different streaming provider due to regional licensing contracts). So, yeah, RUclips is obviously going to win in battle 0$ vs any amount of dollars.

YT takes a bit of upfront investment to deliver full value, which is why the ad-free subscription is a great option. It allows you to explore the range of offerings without the ad interruptions. The "secret" to making YT optimal is to identify favorite channels and subscribe to them so you have a continuous feed of your favorite topics and content providers. In addition, the algorithms get better at suggesting content the more you use it. They likewise post SIMILAR content in the side panel which helps ID new possible sources.
I started just with setting up a news feed from sources around the world for constant tracking. Later added some movie channels and other specific interests like History, Music Appreciation, Aerospace (and even some sports events or highlights and concerts) for both timely and in-depth content. I am constantly adding (and sometime subtracting) channel subscriptions to keep it relevant and fresh, and I keep favorite videos in the playlist archives it allows users to custom build for later re-watch.

You literally only have 12 subscriptions? However, I truly dig your playlists. Wish we had some way to easily sync those to external applications. I'd likely use playlists more, for my own enjoyment, if I could more edit them in mass.
Funny that you posted this exact same thing under my seemingly negative comment about the subscription price. Are you a YT employee, or shareholder? Because this truly sounds like you're shilling for the company, and not giving your own user experience.

I do wonder how much Netlfix gained from their gamble in getting Japanese studios to put their content on their platform. If you checked the news on whats happening with Crunchyroll and other streaming platform for anime content, it's not really good sign overall in that area. As far as I'm aware, Disney is the only competitor doing the same thing as Netflix. Sure, there are channels on RUclips that releases entire anime episodes as well but because a few of them tend to be region lock due to licensing agreements and with how few they are, I don't think they are having an effect to the overall subscription in RUclips.

Would have been nice to see how piracy in form of torrent eats into the viewership of the services although that data set would be almost impossible to keep track of. One thing is certain though or comes off as that, it doesn't affect youtube at all or at the very least as much as it does other "streaming" service.
It is kind of wild to believe or suggest people are watching RUclips (RUclips like videos) cos they can't watch netflix and the likes(actual movies). I would think the first assumption to consider is watching the same movies in another platform then consider watching similar movies in another platform before talking about RUclips and Netflix in contrast.
Although i personally have probably spent more time on RUclips this year, heck even added twitch To the mix . I have seen way less movie this year cos this year movie wise has been terrible imo but i am not sure if it has to do with more RUclips watching or it has resulted to more RUclips watching.
Really love videos like this though.

RUclips premium is “nice”. However I feel like youtube has a conflict of interest. If you use premium and pay fixed monthly fee, they have no incentive to show you relevant recommendations. Every second you watch a video, you cost them money. That’s what I “felt” when I tried youtube premium. With ad-based model, they try harder to keep their “product” (me) engaged.

    • @gregvanpaassen
      @gregvanpaassen 4 месяца назад +4

That's very insightful! Showing videos costs youtube money, so they'd rather take your money and very subtly discourage you from actually watching anything. Exactly the same as with Netflix and any of the minnows. With money from ads, that have to show things you watch so that you watch the ads.

I think there is more to it. Netflix invested heavily and early because all the other companies were pulling their content to start their own streaming services. Netflix was left in a bind so they went full throttle on getting as much original content as they could. They were the first ones on the original content train, and thus had the most success with it. They also have had the last laugh on all those other platforms who pulled their content. Just for some context...Netflix used to pay CBS/Viacom billions of dollars to license the CW content after it aired on The CW. By pulling that content and locking it up at a Paramount streaming service, you lose the billions Netflix was paying you, you have to invest billions to get your service off the ground, and the content just sits on a server generating zero revenue...unless it is a huge franchise like Star Trek. The CW content is not going to generate the kind of subscriber base revenue that licensing would. That is the fatal mistake for these second tier streamers. They threw a lot of money out the window for something they didn't understand and now see isn't working out so well.

RUclips is the most successful streaming company because it's the only one to realize it's value is not in producing contente but in being the best platform. Video streaming needs royalties deals like musicians have with Spotify and in a way how youtube has with it's content creators, you get paid by how much time people watch your content.
These platforms keep ignoring that in a world with orders of magnitude more content than any one person can consume the most valuable thing they cam provide is convenience. A wide catalogue, good search and good recommendation engine is all there companies should care about providing. The field just keeps getting greener for a pure-play contente delivery service to pop up, like Netflix used to be.

As little as I use the streaming services, buying DVDs is actually cheaper, _and_ it has the better result of me actually owning the movie (instead of a license to watch it).
